lol trolly, you're the guy who thinks a gay man can't possibly be physically attracted to a straight man - that there's no reason on earth that could ever happen...

trying to talk about people being out of touch... coming from you, genuinely the most ideologically stupid person i've ever interacted with...

If trolly had his way people would only be allowed to speak in 2020 era progressive twitter slogans.

i never corroborated that it was the 2nd best seller after the koran, but you can rest assured it is a best seller and features prominently in nearly every cairo book store - so while he may gone too far, he was directionally correcti think that's pretty standard for him, he is correct directionally but tends to exaggerate a little and that's where you guys pounce on him, not o

Look at what I actually posted about book sales of Mein Kampf. Is it inaccurate in any respect in your opinion?

by Trolly McTrollson m

You can just make up whatever racist nonsense you like about Arabs here on 2p2. They love Seinfeld but they're too dumb to clock that Jerry Seinfeld is Jewish. They can't get enough of Mein Kampf. lol, imagine how quick I'd get banned if I said this kind of **** about any other ethnic group.

THIS!!!

by Victor m

oh right. is Mein Kampf a normal topic of convo?

This is silly. No one is defending it in any respect.

i agree it's not the best seller after the koran every single year in every single country - but it's definitely a best seller given ample shelf space on most shelves

i wasn't disagreeing with your refutation and i apolgize if it came off that way - i was simply saying that if we needed to choose between binary outcomes between bestseller after the koran and non-existent, the best seller after the koran is a far closer to reality

i was merely recalibrating to say it was closer to the truth than what others here would assume

seinfeld however was a normal topic of conversation, egyptians love that show and when they learned i was american from ny (i'd tell people i was from new york as i grew up about 2 hours away) they almost all universally brought up that show

I guess the Egyptians missed this episode:

you are jumping to conclusions about my post. Im not accusing anyone of defending it.

I just find it weird that its so beloved and discussed that a non-Arabic, non-Muslim, white Westerner would come to understand that it is as beloved as he claims. like, they gotta be talking about it all the time for him to reach that conclusion.

or hes just lying and regurgitating pro-genocide propaganda.

it makes sense when you think about it. there’s almost no explicit mention of judaism in the show. it’s implied, not stated, and if you don’t already understand american or jewish cultural cues, you’re not picking it up, especially watching with arabic subtitles or dubbing

george and elaine have storylines that touch religion more directly. jerry doesn’t. his identity just isn’t presented in a way that someone outside that cultural context is going to recognize

so you’ve got people there dealing with a second language and a completely different cultural framework, watching a show where the main character’s jewish identity is subtle at best. of course it goes unnoticed

and that’s the disconnect. the image of jews they’re exposed to is political, not cultural. they’re not associating that with a comedian in new york talking about cereal and dating, so the connection never gets made

the primary reason seinfeld is prominently viewed as a jewish show is his name is in the title, friends has similar jewish main characters but nobody thinks of that show as "jews in nyc" because the show isn't called Geller

OK. I misunderstood your post.

you'll have to go to cairo and ask

It's very specific in the episode I just mentioned.

I haven't been to Egypt, but it's on the list before I shuffle off this mortal coil.

lol, come on, you can't possibly be this dense. Seinfeld frequently makes overt references to Jewish culture/life in a way that Friends virtually never does. They're not remotely analogous.

by Rococo m

saw that after i posted it, perhaps that one isn't aired there or maybe it just gets forgotten or lost or translated differently, idk

i want to clarify, i'm not arguing they are correct, i'm simply retelling that it's a normal conversation that always ends with anger rather than interest - to the point that it became my "how do i get out of this annoying interaction"

i mean, did you not see the article i posted which expressly talks about the irony of al those "evil jews are ruining the world" egyptians all love seinfeld and they don't see the conflict because they are unaware of it

by Rococo m

right now you can probably book some pretty cheap hotels

go ahead and see what people say when they learn you're from nyc

I've been to Muslim countries, but not Egypt.

What if you stand in the middle of the street and yell “I AM JEWISH!!!”

I'm going to guess that you did not notice all the love for Mein Kampf

never tried it

i'm assuming it wouldn't have gone over well

but maybe my girlfriend wouldn't have been sexually assaulted as often but rather spit on if she walked more than 10 feet away from me if she held up a sign declaring herself a jew

egypt is so messed up that twice kids threw rocks at us on crowded streets and the locals just stood there watching

by Rococo m

Well, yeah, I would assume so? I assumed the whole post was demonstrably false to anyone who has ever known a Muslim or possessed an operating clarity of thought?

Not gonna lie the only person who ever tried to talk to me about Holocaust denialism was an Iraqi.

I can't say that I noticed anything related to Mein Kampf, but I wasn't looking for a copy and I didn't spend much time in bookstores.

Although I would like people to vet information before they spread it on the internet, it really wasn't necessary in this case. Common sense would tell you that (i) more copies of Mein Kampf are sold in predominantly Muslim countries than you would hope; and (ii) nowhere close to as many copies of Mein Kampf are sold in predominantly Muslim countries as Kelhus suggested.

I was

I tried to read it in high school because I was curious to think about what someone like Hitler thought about himself in his own words. It was available in our high school library. I made it about 40 pages. I think it was probably a terrible translation but it was boring.
