fwiw I could cite exceptions to this that are more common than your example. Lebanon, for instance, lists sects on their ID papers. so you can be a Muslim or Christian and not believe in God.

But suppose that worked and the former inhabitants of Crimea wanted back what they felt was rightfully theirs like the Palestinians. Their religous beliefs wouldn't be a factor but their Jewishness would motivate them to support their new homeland.

That things happened to work out diffently for them doesn't alter the fact that it's firstly their Jewishness motivating them to protect their new homeland - irrespective of their religous belief that God did it - just like the Crimea scenario.

The Democrats will probably (don't ask me to actually ingest their reaction) criticize the way Trump is doing it without criticizing that he is doing it.
