Not that anyone would know them, but two of my former friends and colleagues died within the last two months. One retired in June. The other retired two years ago. They were both fine teachers and talented people.
I'm afraid to retire because I've seen too many colleagues die within a year after retirement.

I'm sorry for your losses, John. But, that's correlation, not likely causation. Don't let that deter you from retiring, if that's what you want.
The way you speak of your classes and students, I suspect going on teaching is what you really want anyway, though.
may i suggest constructing a fourth point of temporary shoring to the tripod of life before removing a habit that has likely occupied close to half your years on earth if not more
Like 25 years ago, I played poker with an older guy at the casino often and he was a high school principal and retired after 30+ years and died less than a month later from a heart attack.
we got a lot of old guys in this forum...we should make plans for other people in our real lives to make sure that when we go, they let the rest of us know lol

I'm sorry to hear about your friends. I cant imagine that feeling, fwiw my father is 76? he's been retired for about 20 years. he stays busy, goes out every day to the casino, restaurant, socializes a lot, even wrote a book and delivers talks to educators and young students. I think staying busy is the key for my dad. he's had more close calls than I like to admit but now he's very strong. has been getting his steps in because my mom's in the hospital and he's visiting her every day. due to her location he's walking A TON and he said he's feeling more energetic and strong. maybe a silver lining to the situation. mom is getting stronger, hopefully getting out soon.

And John sorry to hear about your loss. The key to retirement is keeping busy and involved. My days are full as ever but I have a built in edge. Since I was a trader I still lean on the markets to give my life structure. If I was just watching TV or movies all day I would go nuts. Find something to keep you busy and/or involved in something and life is great!

I try and go visit somewhere in England (or sometimes Wales) once a week, but my usual day is now taken up with quite a bit of reading, podcasting or editing podcasts, tai chi, meditation, weights, a lot of walking and listening to audiobooks and podcasts, learning the piano and blues slide guitar, watching a movie or two, browsing youtube and watching TV. And a bit of writing here and there. I also try to get to the cinema once a week, though some weeks it's impossible to find a decent movie to go see. Also boardgame with people every few weeks for an evening session.
I'm also trying to integrate in some videogaming, but I cant quite fit it in, and I don't want to give up any of the above.

I don't think this movie is still watched, but I consider it a masterpiece, and it was considered shocking at the time of its release.

Harold and Maude is one of those gaps in my movie watching history....guess I should fix that soon
