Man, I hated the Yankees and had been rooting for the Bucs ever since Brooklyn left for the West Coast. I raced out of school that day and ran to a friend's house who had a color TV. We got there just in time to see Maz knock it over the wall. I still remember it. I still remember Yogi standing there, watching it. I still remember Maz jumping when it went over.

Just read that Peter Greene's death was apparently an accidental gunshot wound, he accidentally shot himself in the left armpit.

RIP Timman, who got unfortunately caught up in the FIDE-PCA split. If he was a golfer, he would’ve been Tony Finau; a tenniser, Guy Forget.
It’s hard to remember but it took all the king’s horses to get Fischer across the line in the 1972 Cycle—aside from winning the actual games themselves. Kasparov has written at some length that iho Bobby wasn’t ever going to agree to play Karpov for a variety of reasons, the main one being he understood his mental illness was advancing.
RIP Sedaka, who I thought wrote a lot more hits than he did. I probably confused him at times with Burt Bacharach. Give him full credit fir LWKUT, but Solitaire is truly ghastly, and I love the Carpenters. No wonder Karen couldn’t keep anything down after recording it.
RIP Mazeroski, glad he got in the HOF while alive. Gene Tenace in 1972 probably the most famous unexpected WS power surge.

RIP Holtz. Arkansas’ 31-6 victory in the 1978 Orange Bowl, down four offensive starters, over 24pt favorite Oklahoma—seeking their third natty in four years—might be the greatest bowl game coaching performance ever.
But Lou was also something of a Renaissance man, with a wide range of interests outside of football.
