I think there was a window in time where , given the info available, the claim was defensible. Some gamer stuff did align with groyperism/fuentism. I don't think it was the typical attempt of disgusting monsters on the left to shape the narrative.
I think there were genuine elements to believe it was possible the assassin was to the right of Kirk.
But now that we know he banged another boy who was transitioning... i think the motive is pretty clear.
