I did grow up in a household where not much money was spent on frivolous things and we didn't have some of the luxuries other kids in my neighborhood had.
Also, my first job, at 15,was basically running my own business. I delivered newspapers, but I didn't get paid by the newspaper company, I paid them to buy the papers and had to bill all my customers. And my younger brother was effectively my employee because I handled all the accounting.
I'm sure that early experience did help me to learn effective money management.
