What is a lot? I just see a bunch of exceptions that prove the rule and people that don’t sit in public games.

Also, all of your questions have been answered by Limon before and he has detailed how he has gotten crushed booking so much he went to quant to save his sanity.

I am shocked, shocked that a smart poker player will pretend to be loose and actually play tight, lol. Go read Limon’s first well, his 2000th post before posting again please.

Also has anyone in this thread played with Limon in person?I have a friend that would the rounds with Limon in public plo games (only in the last couple years) at commerce and he would say things like “I think he talks the talk but is actually pretty tight and reserved and definitely trying to win when he plays. He’s not some kind of court jester entertaining the ta

I've played with him a few times maybe 10-12 years ago. He did play tight and solid. But he was also very social.
He doesn't claim to be some wild action player.

You literally make his point without realizing it. Basically anyone winning at a decent clip in 8-9 handed poker is at the end of the day playing relatively solid with few exceptions. But you can still be fun to play with. You can still take 0 ev flips. You can still straddle twice in a row when someone on your right happens to come back from dinner right after you just straddled in a game where everyone is straddling. You can blind raise once or twice a night when some guy stuck 20 buy ins who is blind potting whenever he can asks you to. You're really not giving up much. You can take one ****ing shot especially when you're in Vegas and the rest of the table has been drinking all night. (if someone legit doesn't drink I get it and that's fine. But i've played with way too many people over the years who drink, but will NEVER have so much as a beer at the table even when everyone is getting wasted because god forbid they give up a sliver up ev)

I had a game a few weeks ago where guy playing awful and stuck heaps tried to buy in for his 500 in a game with a 1500 dollar min buy in. The dealer said the min is 500. he asked for a 3 way flip for his 500. I said sure. Not one other person would do it. I don't know what the hell is wrong with these people. I say we can do 2 flips if you win the first one and he says "don't worry about it these people don't want to gamble" and leaves. I'm sure he dropped it off at bj or baccarat and that's where he'll be going next time he goes to the casino.

I'm not claiming to be crazy action either. But just being halfway social, giving up a little bit of short term ev (I'm talking the occasional red chip or two in a game with 20-50k on the table) taking some o ev flips etc can go a long way.

Look at any big high roller field like triton you have a lot of recreationals there that play for competition over socializing like David einhorn or a lot of the Asian recs

lol no you see the opposite. the first couple of years of high rollers they got a lot of whales. these days they get almost none. I was actually thinking of Einhorn before when someone mentioned rich guy who actually want the competition because he's the rare one who does. And he's not even a whale. He's trying to play well and not out there gambling like crazy. Obviously he's a dog to the wizards.

Triton has even been doing split events where day 1 whales only play with other whales.

Look at these 100-250k events at wsop and tell me how many whales there are. There are whales who play poker, bet 100k on a hand of blackjack but won't play these things because they're torture.

I agree with everything you said…all that is plus ev for the table and for the pro in the big picture. I just don’t see this perfect storm happening in most of the games live.

I just think some games are going to be everyone being pretty docile and quiet and trying their best to win and you would be surprised how many whales and recs enjoy this type of atmosphere over the wild gambly loud social one…

Just curious but Do you play most of your live play at borgota? Used to live out that way so would play a lot in the early to mid 2010s for some reason that casino is an extreme in the bad ways that you mentioned never enjoyed my time there. Would see a lot of the stuff like pros seat changing, tanking and the high limit games break immediately after whale busted.

I haven’t found anywhere as bad as that on the west coast or even cities like Detroit.

If that's what they want they can get it no problem in any poker room in the country.

Pre covid I used to play borgata a decent amount. The place is a dust fest now and not worth the trip. Look at Bravo tonight and you'll see how empty it is and how small the games are. And you're right the players there are the epitome of mis regs.
Before covid at least as far as plo went the higher you played the more the good players "got it" and were enjoyable to play with for the most part.

Vegas is West coast and the pros there are so bad for the game- worse than anywhere else I've ever played.

I've played in Detroit but only for maybe 10-15 hours total so while I didn't see anything bad from the players it's way too small of a sample have a valid opinion.

They are all over do you seriously think that 10+ 5/10 games that will be running around LA tonight have no whales? You think they are all running around regs?

Another thing I would like to point out is for public games…yes it would be nice if everyone was on board to make the games fun but there’s just a lot of ppl that are very antisocial yet are respectful and I think that’s fine.

I have actually seen live games get a lot more toxic recently I think because of rude recs being used to having their way for years and they feel like just because they are losing money they can straight up just bully and be rude to others. This type of bullying hurts the game for newcomers and puts poker in a bad light imo. I think Limons remarks really borderline on this toxic rude behavior to other pros.

If you want the perfect atmosphere and have your perfect line up then start your own home game! But going to a public casino game you can’t expect everyone to behave a certain way.

There’s another recent thread where Raymer really is against bullying at the table for any reason I forgot which one but he made some great points in this regard.

lol 5/10. In one of the most expensive cities in the country.

Again you're proving my point.

5/10 1500 cap I believe at commerce is basically the biggest public game they'll get these days regularly maybe a 10/20 or 2.

10 years ago you'd have that many uncapped 10/20 games on a random Wednesday. And that was really 10/20/40 -now adjust for inflation. And there were bigger games than that running regularly as well.

Like I said games today are way smaller but in the pit people gamble bigger.

So where are these whales who want to play big and want to do it in a sterile environment with quiet assassins who take every short term edge they can?

Limon is a minor poker celebrity from LATB and a bigger one in his market.

He is entertaining and probably fun to play with if you have more money than ability.

A rec with some cash is making alot from his day job so the $ is just the cost of admission.

His informed conclusion is that play for your livelihood is a living hell.

I was surprised he mentioned our heroes since that would require watching their vlogs.

I think your conclusion that the games have gotten smaller over time is because of the behavior of pros?

I think they have just gotten smaller because of the combined skill level has risen and rake increasing thus making winrates for everyone smaller.

Also if you expect even whales to be able to play peak nosebleeds stakes for two decades now? Just isn’t sustainable of course stakes we’re going to decrease.

Of course poker isn’t going be as popular as it was back in the peak when it was on espn and pokerstars and full tilt were roaring but to say a decade later that poker has decreased in popularity and game size is because of the behavior of pros is a stretch…

by KeepGLOBALfair

That is a huge reason for it yes.

These game still go private so yes a big factor is not enjoying the environment. Rake is a non factor in public big games. Whales aren't grinding their way up from 1/2 and 2/5 they're just playing. I have no idea why you mentioned rake. Guys losing hundreds or even thousands of dollars an hour aren't impacted by rake being 5 or 10 dollars an hour more than it was 10-20 years ago.

People will big money aren't afraid to gamble and lose- but they need to have fun in the process.

As for the bolded- the same exact whales no. But casinos are still getting plenty of action in the high limit pits especially on weekends. Most those aren't the same whales who were playing in 2005. Go walk through high limit at Aria Wynn and Bellagio on a friday night. You'll see multiple people betting more on a single hand of bj bacc etc than someone has in the biggest stack in any public game running in vegas at the time. And that stack is mostly furniture.

So like I said if these whales like playing with boring silent tanking pros where are they?

Do you have any facts to back up that casinos are seeing more revenue from the pits?

Here’s something I just found off a quick google search for MGM Detroit..

“MGM Grand Detroit reported the highest table game and slot revenue of any property during the period, generating $53.8m for a decrease of 5.1% year-over-year, while MotorCity Casino's table game and slot revenue fell by 6.4% for a total of $35.9m.”

Part of the reason whales aren’t enjoying the environment is simply because the population has gotten better at poker over two decades and they simply do not like losing…thus they play smaller or find another outlet like easy sports betting on their cellphone…its not all because of the couple pros that are quiet in the game lol

And even with that decrease they still have people betting more on a single hand in the pit than anyone has on the poker table in any of their games.

So where are the whales?

I imagine most casinos are in fact down year over year since the economy is doing worse, stock market is pretty stagnant after years of gains etc.

Now do you think casino revenue is down from when Commerce had 8-10 10/20/40 games, and bigger games running publicly?

So where are the whales?

But they go lose elsewhere so it's not the losing that bothers most of them, it's the getting nothing for the losing.
Yes by its nature people getting better (gambling less) will make the games less fun. But people getting better and being torture to play with is a deadly combo. Like I said that means you need to make MORE of an effort to be fun to play with not less.

It's total backwards thinking to have more competition, less customers and think you need to do less in any money making endeavor.

You realize they lose in that "easy outlet like sports betting " right? But at least they have fun sweating the games.

I wish we could do a social experiment

A high stakes table where you had 8 crushers with 1 whale but the atmosphere was a 10/10 alcohol straddles etc but the whale would obviously get destroyed for months on end if he kept showing up

Vs

A mid stakes The table where you had 8 silent non crushers that just played passive and the whale stood a fighting chance to either win or lose small a significant portion of the time and wouldn’t cost him a fortune if he kept showing up

Which game would he pick?

The answer might be why games are getting smaller…

You keep asking “but where are the whales” from the peak of poker to now…as if there can’t be many other factors at play than just the behavior of pros. That’s just so short sighted and you seem smart enough to understand that.

I’m not arguing with you that poker isn’t as popular now as it was in 2010. But I’m also not agreeing that the behavior of live poker pros is the main reason or even top 5 reasons.

For the last time what you said would make sense if whales were gambling smaller overall. Cherry picked year over year data aside that hasn't been the case.

Casino revenue are up astronomically since we had much bigger public games. And that's just physical casinos. No we have online sportsbooks and in a few states online casinos. And yet poker games have gotten so small you're trying to talk about "whales" in 5/10 nl in LA to prove your point lmao. That's like playing 2/5 nl 15 years ago.

So where are the whales?

it's clearly the top reason I didn't say it was the only reason. lol@saying it's not in the top 5.

You can't seem to wrap your head around the fact that people losing at gambling generally need go feel like they got something for their money. It's really that simple.

You guys are really missing the mark on "being social and making the game fun".

It is not 0 EV flips or double straddles or double board PLO bomb pots.

It is "Why do the Dallas Cowboys suck?" or "Should I go with a LT1 or a big block in my 69 camero?" or even "What is the best wine to serve with grilled salmon?"

That is called being social. Smoke some cigars, buy somebody a drink, talk about woes with women. Then you can play like a complete nit and a whale looking for fun doesn't care.

Anyway I've said enough on Limons video. I'm not gonna clog the thread of anymore from dunking on Trooper and Nomad.

Your username alone should disqualify you from posting. Go ice fishing and fall in. I should open a grey market card room called Armenians only and 86 anyone else that can fog a mirror. Go read the thread global nitidiot and remember look down and close your mouth in the shower.

Now tell me what's happened to bigger poker games in the last ten years.

People are gambling more.

Where are the whales?
