It now turns out that the constitution always depended on unwritten rules and, when you get a ruler who doesn't care about all that, there's no check. An executive ruler quite separate from the legislature, and unanswerable to it, was probably always going to be a liability, and some of the founders feared they were creating a ruler 'plus roi que le roi', but there it is.

It's not empathy for the victim, it's utter disdain and disgust for the perpetrator, who clearly thinks they get to touch someone else who is posing zero threat to themselves or to anyone else.

All "conservatives" (reactionaries imo) understand inherently that they need to be protected by the law but not subject to it while dominating a underclass that is subject to the law but not protected by it.
The dumbest of them understands this class analysis innately.
