The "LOLCANADA" thread...again
So what's new?
I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet
It's so hard to measure the harm things like this do to the United States. One of the reason you can sign agreements and spend billions of dollars on shared projects is because you trust the other side. Countries don't normally have an agreement and then rip it up and demand a better agreement after one side pays for 100% of the thing. So like there is a cost to the US. They ar
Agree. The only problem is that Americans won't challenge or examine the long-term effect of their standing in the world until their economy takes a hit. But, this should not be a surprise. Pretty much every western democracy only cares about something when their wallet is impacted. The majority of people pretend they care about deeply about integrity, transparency, climate, poverty, etc, but in the voting booth it generally comes down to how the economy is doing, and if it going good, do they want to risk shaking it up?

Kind of like the Keystone pipeline both sides sign a deal ,one side starts it and a new president quashes the deal
That metaphor might have worked if Canada had built and paid for the entire keystone pipeline.
I wonder if conservative will give credit for pivoting off the keystone pipeline with the unreliable US and instead building transmountain pipeline to Asia, diversifying Canada's economic interests. Can you imagine if today we had the keystone but not transmountain? Yikes.
another rep would do it too .I feel like not using a bridge for 2 or so years would have minor maintenance costs less then if it were active. Not like we didnt wait 12 years already for it whats another 2. You might not even need to wait that long just wait till your negotiating something and give up that position for something else or vice versa. caving for nothing is not ide
You really don't see an issue with this do you?

Splitting profit not revenue.
“We get the revenues. Then the servicing of the costs of the bridge and paying the debt of the bridge, and then what’s left over, there’s a split of that for 15 years,”
I don't really get all the fuss honestly. If the debt charges are included in the expenses then it doesn't really make a difference. We are basically moving 15 years of the profit splitting period from the 2070s to the present, in exchange for deducting debt servicing costs during those 15 years.
Original deal: Toll revenues collected, expenses paid, then Canada get 100% of remainder until debt is repaid (takes about 50 years), after which the remainder is split 50/50.
New deal: Toll revenues collected, expenses paid, debt interest is paid, then for 15 years the remainder is split 50/50, then after that Canada gets 100% again until debt is fully repaid, and then it's split 50/50 again.
To me it reads like we made the deal too complicated for Trump to understand, he gets to feed his r3tarded base that they scored yet another win and in reality for 15 years we're giving them 50% of what should essentially be zero.
Edit: I'm a little late to this party and I do now realize, after reading some more articles, that perhaps some/all of you were responding to what was reported at first by the Trump admin, which honestly, silly you. Why would you believe anything coming from that corrupt mess?
Well the pound of flesh has been paid to the alter of Trump - and with that the Gordie Howe bridge is allowed to open. And it is one expensive pound of flesh too, taking half the revenue and putting it into a vague slush fund for the region. And more importantly for the ambassador bridge owner and trump donor, the americans now get a say on the tolls so that the ambassador brid
Well based on your comments on how were not experts on military contracts I would ask you Have you read the original contract, expert on international trade, expert on infrastructure financing? Weill if no Carney and Trump obviously have experts that advised him on how to handle this .

Albert invested almost 1.8 billion dollars on this project I do believe the Gordie Howe bridge was just over 6 billion. Alberta never getting back a cent. That is not the case with the Gordie Howe bridge
I bet you were happy when the Keystone was cancelled
Ya pablito, a second round of articles updated the conditions more clearly than the rest round and I agree it is less bad than originally thought with interest deducted not just expenses prior to the split and Trump is claiming a bigger win than actually happened. There is also the clause about Americans getting to bound the toll revenue based on local conditions (ie whatever the ambassador bridge does).
But yes, a half pound of flesh extracted vs the full pound. Still, I think we can complain about extracted a half pound of flesh on a signed, payed for, and fully built project at the last second just because Trump can and will leverage his power.
It depends on the context. I want the US to take a leadership role transitioning to a vastly lower carbon economy, sparking a global move in this direction. I want a world where keystone XL isn’t needed. Biden did some important steps in that direction, Trump reverted all of them. So in a context where the US isn’t lifting a ****ing finger to solve the problem, and it is pure economic self interest then yes it would be in canadas self interest to have keystone XL and too bad we don’t. But the bigger too bad is the lack of global action on climate change.
The federal government will not accept any new applications this year from people who want to sponsor their parents and grandparents to come to Canada.
The Immigration Department says the change is part of an effort to responsibly manage the system.
Great news. They seem to pause it every year so hopefully the program is axed all together.
New deal: Toll revenues collected, expenses paid, debt interest is paid, then for 15 years the remainder is split 50/50, then after that Canada gets 100% again until debt is fully repaid, and then it's split 50/50 again.
Close but not quite right. Canada will still collect the toll revenue to pay off the capital debt and cover operational expenses first. However, out of the remaining net profits, Canada has agreed to split the net toll profits 50/50 for the first 15 years. After that it all goes to Canada until the debt is paid off. Not sure the debt will ever get paid off.
All it really does is delay the time Canada gets paid back, however we do get paid back. I'm sure the trumpers believe he made a great deal. Not sure how it will work out for him re michigan in the fall mid terms. Can't imagine they are happy he butted in.
I thought we were elbows up! Under threat and in a trade war! How much toll revenue is there going to be once the new world order begins? Are Canadians just going to travel to USA to buy liquor bottles to pour out in videos on Instagram?
I pay attention to climate change and relevant legislation. I would dispute your claim that Biden did anything important and which you refuse to substantiate with detail.
I challenge your claim as empty.
It's not my job to go hunting the internet for something that doesn't exist.

Didn't they build 8 charging stations for billions . Biden had zero impact on climate change
I sometimes wonder if Nut Nut is Uke 😀

Uke only answers questions he wants and often refuses to provide proof.
Still waiting on an answer why we value Ukraine but not Sudan or Yemen

I don’t know who you are or why you are in this thread, but obviously to anyone paying even the slightest bit of attention there was a massive difference between the climate policies of Biden compared to Trump before or after. Maybe take this to one of the climate change threads or US politics threads if you are interest in relitigating it.

This is an utterly meaningless question. A complete false equivalency. These are wildly different conflicts with substantially different geopolitical factors, it isn’t that one is “valued” more or less. Sometimes you get ignored because you say stupid things that aren’t worth unpacking.
far left guy on climate policy meets far far left guy on climate policy. I don't know much about nut nut but all his treads are about climate change and weather

Actually not true but there is a huge difference between the climate policies of Trudeau and Carney.
Nonsense .... there is a big difference between image and policy. Learn to tell the difference.
Correct, you should learn. There was a huge swath of policies implemented by Biden and overturned by Trump. The IRA alone had hundreds of billions of dollars worth of policy changes.
Like dude I’m not claiming this is some panacea or anything of the sort, I was plenty critical of Biden - not enough, a lot of the wrong stuff, etc. All I characterized this as was a step in the right direction and that it absolutely is. I’m glad Biden was doing something, not nothing even if not close to perfect. I’m sad Trump is doing (less than) nothing. It was a step. You pretending there was no step at all serves nothing but your own mental image.
Actually not true but there is a huge difference between the climate policies of Trudeau and Carney.
lmao. There is, obviously, a much bigger gap between Biden and Trump than between Trudeau and carney on climate policy. Like Carney is maintaining the industrial carbon tax and got the massive carbon capture project in the Alberta MOU. No way Trump does either of those. You know I’m disappointed in Carneys environmental policies, but try to keep your criticisms within the realm of reality.

Your dreaming if you think that pipeline gets built or the carbon capture promise is kept. Carney was smart take the northern route of the table OK the southern route through an indigenous tribes claim that says they will never allow it
