Tom Dwan - the missing man

How convenient is it that he just falls off the face of the earth after issuing and bailing half way through a 50k hand

DM me and I'll tell you. Make sure you have your tinfoil hat on though.

I know HSP was heavily edited, but Doyle was no slouch in some pretty stout lineups and if I remember correctly picked off Tom’s bluffs a couple times.

We act like the β€œyoung thundercat” trope is new, I’m sure Ungar and others Doyle ran across in the old days played a similar style to Dwan that he was able to adjust to and exploit as well, which is why he is a better overall player.

"fish" is all relative to the era they played in and the knowledge known by most pros.

Its like calling Bobby Fischer a crappy chess player because current players outskill him

I’m not sure many current players would outclass him, as surprising as that may sound, even 50+ years after his primeβ€”especially in a game so heavily shaped by technological and theoretical advancements.

That said, I’m dont think he’s a good example to support the case as the third-best player of all time.

Doyle was someone who motivated a ton of people to try and become a pro and grew the game through his legend status while never actually being as good as the legend would lead you to believe

And how would you know Doyle was never as good as the legend would lead you to believe? Even in the early days of the televised poker boom, Doyle was an old man. He was a professional poker player for, what, 50 years and still playing in the biggest cash games as an old man. The guy literally wrote the book on poker because he figured things out before almost everyone else who played the game

Bro, Doyle was the greatest of all time. You need to remember that. I will say one thing, back in the HSP ancient poker days, Tom played like those guys you're praising in this era. Tom's very good. No one can deny that. But Doyle was right there, ready to eat everyone alive. He would have been even better decades prior. He had a photographic memory. He was a super genius.

A reddit user ran into Dwan today

How convenient is it that he just falls off the face of the earth after issuing and bailing half way through a 50k hand challenge when he goes down over a million dollars? He come out a year or so ago and said that he has this "big" problem with FTP that he would address once he had a decent nights sleep, what ever happened here?He agreed to pay penalties on a monthly basis for

It's the first post of this thread
Looks like his issues were right in front of us the whole time

after reading the latest article, i am going to be captain obvious and say that, Dwan suffers from delusions of grandeur and an exaggerated sense of one's own value or importance.

“I used to be able to deal with so much. In 2020, I got brought into the middle of a ****ing triad war, for a moment, without intending to, and I handled it. I solved that situation without many headaches. But, right now, I’d rather not play high stakes. Part of it is that I am cash short. Let’s just say that some people have been difficult with me. And part of it is that I can have a higher chance of losing in heavy situations than I did a few years ago.”

his chess handicap match for $50K was epic though.

seems believable to me he would be in that spot

seems believable to me he would be in that spot

the ''i handled it '' part is theline i was referencing. Just like after Black Friday when he want on cable news and stated that he would sort out the mess.

Dwan is delusional

His problem is he hasn't slept since 2004

Doyle played high stakes pretty much up til his final days and you could literally just go to Vegas and play Doyle if you thought he was bad at cards for all the money you could put onto the table. He played in a public casino it wasn’t hard to find him.

Never once have I seen someone post in these debates β€œI went to Vegas and stacked Doyle, light work ez”. A lot of people tried though.

I never told anybody this, about eight or nine months ago, I’m at the Bellagio, it’s late and I see Doyle Brunson walk in. He goes and sits in the high stakes section and the whole place stops. Everybody puts an eye on him. After a while, there wasn’t a game going on because all the high rollers are over there watching and some of them playing but they’re just giving their money to him to say "oh, I played with Texas Dolly," you know what I did?

I sat down.

You need fifty to sixty grand to play right in that game. I had six but I had to know. I played tight for an hour, folded mostly then I made a score. Rags, I had nothing, but he raised and I decided I don't care about the money, I'm just going to outplay the guy. I'm going to outplay this guy, this hand, I'll re-raise.

He comes back over the top at me trying to bully me like I'm some tourist. I hesitate for like two seconds then I'll re-raise and he makes a move to his checks and he looks at me, checks his cards and looks at me again, and he mucked it. I took it down.

Doyle looks at me and says, "did you have it?" I just said, "I'm sorry, Doyle. I don't remember." I got up and walked to the cashier. People say they never see anyone go to Vegas and stack him, but I sat with the best in the world and I won. I'll do it again if I can.
