They can't charge you tax in multiple states for the same wages though. There was a supreme court ruling to that effect some years back. Like if an athlete makes wages playing in another state they owe taxes there, but they can then write it off so they don't have to pay again in their home state. Multiple states can't double dip on the same income.
In the case you're citing I'm guessing he was just better off getting his buyout state tax free in Florida compared to if he earned his full income in New York where the state taxes are high.

But the applicable cA law had been on the books since at least the 60’s.
So I doubt “the guy” who started it was also talking about expanding it to bands, though it certainly does apply to them. In fact I would not be surprised if bands and similar were not paying it before athletes since they are self employed until they form a corp.

If there is one thing nba bball players should pick up after their playing career it is golf, a much better alternative to poker with similar potential outcomes, and less “cheating.” The psychosocial tendencies within bball players seem to be common, as it pertains to losing and ego. Good thing about golf is there is always going to be a better golfer than you and the game is never beatable and much more difficult to cheat without it being obvious. Poker this is largely the same except the cheating is much less obvious.
I have been around underground games with celebrities and ex pro athletes at much lower stakes than the ones discussed and I was sure that they were getting cheated using DM2. However as someone said previously any smart game runner would let the sheep win every so often to pay off the “debt,” and keep them coming back and unsuspecting.

The rise and ease is why they get caught. When it was mostly done through bookies/offshore this stuff would fly under the radar.

You could argue that, even if this were legal and risk free, it wouldn't be worth the time and effort for him.
I wouldn't even be surprised if it was -ev even if he got away with it. When they crunched the numbers on his impending 80-100 million dollar contract, a few extra balls might shave off .1% or 100k.

Or perhaps professional athletes are just largely idiots who skated by in high school and college, never actually going to class or learning anything, and are surrounded by hangers-on who are always looking for the next hustle.
This is really old-school, live action stuff, it has nothing to do with the rise of betting online.

First pitch ball or strike props were not even readily available to public betting until online sportsbooks started. Just remember Peter Rose. Baseball has always been heavy handed with actual members of the sport betting on games. These dudes are toast. More to come for sure.

But making it legal is why they got caught. Bookies have website now with live betting as do off shore sites. But bookies aren't running data on betting irregularities and running to the authorities and MLB with it.
Sure in Peter (lol) Rose's day live betting wasn't an issue. But the fact it exists today is a function of technology not legality.
