really doesn't make sense. why would a guy worth millions get involved with something like this for peanuts

Can't judge the entire population of the NBA but the betting scandals seem to keep coming. Dudes are making millions and faking injuries so others can hit on prop bets for like 10 grand. Makes no sense. But its happening. College is even wilder and the committees in charge of investigating are either too small to keep up, or really don't care. At least at the college level I could see it with some not getting NIL or very little.

just because they have millions doesn't mean their friends do. so they are giving insider trading etc so their friends can make money. not themselves

It's like some of you were born yesterday and don't know about the plethora of athletes who have gone broke for many different reasons. Some athletes have gone broke while they were still active players. Plenty of athletes have come out after their retirement talking about gambling habits they had while they were playing.

There's a million reasons why someone would get involved but to act this surprised is just crazy.

Shaq was on a podcast about this as well (pay and going broke) where he broke down one of his salaries. Like if he gets paid $2 million a year, well that's barely 1.2 after taxes, then you pay the agent, then the accountant, then an assistant, etc. Okay, so now you have 750,000. Well you buy a car because...you got paid! Now its 600,000. Now you go and put that downpayment on a mansion or lux condo, now you are down to 300,000.

You have 300,000 to last you the year, including mortgage payments. But people don't think you have 300,000 for parties, dinner, vacations, then saw you got paid $2 million a year. There is a disconnect between the people around you and the financial expectation and what you actually have. And none of that story involves actual investments or anything. Super easy to be terrible with money.

Still besides the point with prop bets and getting a few grand from a cheating ring, that is just stupidity, which Shaq fully called out in a broadcast this week. He said again and again, it is not a gambling addiction, its pure stupidity.

But that's almost always after playing and these guys in the NBA specifically just make so much money now. Terry Rozier has never even made an All Star team and makes 26m a year. And he still throws that away.

Yes I pointed out that there are some athletes who have gone broke WHILE playing for a reason. Evander Kane is a perfect example of someone who filed for bankruptcy while playing due to gambling addiction. It's not hard to imagine how a Terry Hozier ends up where he did if he is indeed a gambling addict and not like it's hard to spend 26m(pre tax) a year. Mike Tyson went through 300-400m in what. 10? 15? years.

When Cus passed and Tyson moved on to a different famous promoter going broke was a foregone conclusion

its not really about riches and status.

these athletes messed up simply from a lack of intellect, chalking this scam up to just another side hustle.

Where are you seeing these numbers? All reports I’ve seen had leaving a meetup following the game in questions with $200k (may have been 300k I don’t recall specifics). That is a far cry from $10k and we don’t know how many bags he met with prior to the bettors foolishly playing at legal books.

Have not read ESPN article but others specifically say DM2. The picture I saw was a DM2 not 1.

Yeah, I see that now. I'm wondering why they needed the tables X-ray tables if they could just rig the shuffler. Seems like you need one or the other. I guess both is better than just one but seems unnecessary.

Mike wasn’t hopelessly lost until the March 1988 death at only 58yo of Jim Jacobs (who had been ill for awhile), but yeah, it was inevitable that Mike was going to lose all his money before he ever had any; same with Ali.

Billups & Rozier are just incomprehensible. As has been pointed out, 90% of NBA fans have no idea who Rozier is and he was making $26M a season.

I think Chaunce might’ve fallen into the Big Shot trap; center of attention, illicit thrills, cash in hand, young hoes.

As bad as it looks though, it wouldn’t shock me to see them back on the court. Even worst case, they should each have a few mil left after prison.

I didn't see anyone has posted this recent interview with Berkey. Some take away from are as follows. They weren't x-ray tables. The cards were marked with infrared ink. The dealers dealt the cards just as they came from the shuffler, which was suspicious. They invited many high stakes pros, which was suspicious. People who didn't know how to play were making crazy plays which worked out. They couldn't have gone that far in a public game where they didn't have complete control.

Presumably, many pros and some wealthy amateurs avoided the game because it was suspicious. However, they were able to get some suckers. Berkey started out playing underground games, and probably was more aware to look for this sort of thing than some Internet or GTO pros.

To you perhaps. This idea that because someone is making 26m a year therefore he can't develop gambling habits or get in with the wrong people is just laughable. If you want to argue that it's stupid, sure, we all agree. But very easy to comprehend how someone could end up in the situation he's in.

If the NBA wants to lose even more credibility, sure.

As has been pointed out I’m sure, “making $26M” is nowhere near taking home $26M. Cut that number in half just for Federal, State, Local (if any) taxes. Then your agent, attorney, etc. Then you overspend on a big house, luxury cars, jewelry, etc, it’s pretty easy for these guys to suddenly be “cash poor” and in need of cash just to sustain their overbought lifestyles. It’s a tale as old as time.

Exactly. It's honestly shocking poker players can't comprehend a professional athlete being a degenerate. As if making 26m/year before tax somehow means you are no longer prone to being a degen or gambling addiction.....

I’ll take that as you accepting defeat. Try harder next time.

Here's something I recently learned:

"The average professional athlete files tax returns for 16-20 states. This is called the Jock tax."

So it looks like pro athletes have to pay taxes in each of those states they have games in if those states have state income taxes.

Same is true for poker players technically

Decades ago I read a profile on the guy who started the jock tax, maybe the Philly comptroller? He said he was going to expand it to touring bands.

Yea I remember reading about this a few years ago.

There was a baseball player named Vernon Wells who was washed up. But he still had something like 20 million dollars left and one year on his contract. At the time he was on the Yankees but getting paid from the Yankees Blue Jays and Angels. The Yankees released him. Nobody picked him up. He actually saved money by getting released because he lived in Florida so he didn't have to pay any state tax on his salary for that last year.
