I think The Terminator isn't dated at all. He comes into the world naked like a newborn baby, and the first act of violence is committed against him. Then it gets better.

Saying a movie is bad bc it’s slow is lol BUT part of what makes rickroll such a character
Think ill always have love for the terminators because they were some of the first R movies I saw and set the stage for my love of action movies
Watched a couple of newish horror(ish?) movies this week since its Halloween week.
Weapons meh! Slow and boring and I never really got into it at all.
The Substance Started strong and interesting but eventually morphed into meh and very stupid.
I realiize I am not the audiance for this kind of stuff but maybe 5% of the time they land with me and when they do its usally worth the effort of sifting through the crap.
I loved Weapons. Telling the story from different perspectives helped break it up and keep it interesting.
I though the ending was perfect, but I'm also a sucker for

endings where the villain gets wrecked.

My favorite horror movie of the last 4-5 years is Talk To Me. We watched Bring Her Back this week which is from the same brothers. Solid movie but not as good as Talk to Me.

I was about to suggest the same 2, lol.
Talk to Me was pretty good 4/5 for me, but I'd personally rate several horror movies in the last few years as better. For me, the top spots of the last 5 years are probably Pearl and Sinners.
If you increase it to last 10 years, Mandy would be up there too.
2022, the year Talk to Me and Pearl came out, was a pretty damn great year for horror movies though. I watched almost every horror movie that year I could find, and I found maybe 3 weak movies in 50+.
Another one from 2022 that hardly anyone saw that was really terrific was You Won't Be Alone, a Macedonian horror movie - in the style of something like Company of Wolves, is as close as I could get. I'd put that in top 10 horror movies of the last decade.

I really enjoyed The Substance though, so make of that what you will.
I remember I couldn't stop laughing for the last 10-15 minutes, and was aware I was getting side-eyed by people in the cinema who were not laughing, which made me laugh even more.
I loved The Coffee Table, which was also from 2022. Not sure it totally counts as a "horror" though, and it's definitely not for everybody lol.

This sums up my experience watching Blue Velvet. When the audience was laughing, I was in shock, and when the audience was in shock, I was laughing.

Any movie that quotes Dune without acknowledging it is kind of awesome.
Independent theater here in SLC has understandably been show a bunch of Redford movies. I don’t work Mondays so an APTM/Butch double feature.
Best recent horror: Sinners & Black Phone 1—I know I’m a lone voice on the latter. Is Ex Machina a horror movie? The ending certainly resembles one.

I choose going to the zoo on likely the last warm afternoon of the year—and likely at age 60 for the last time—over the double feature. Would love to see ATPM again but talk about dated.
First time viewing of Raging Bull last night. That movie rocked me to my core and it's interesting to see parallels between Scorsese's early characters, to his characters now. Talk about a guy that will take you down a dark depressing corner of the world! Watching De Niro and Pesci do their thing at a young age is a beautiful thing. Also melted my brain seeing Frank Vincent with dark hair! There's a shot during the last Sugar Ray fight where the lens is ultra wide, there's a subtle push in and in slow motion and it's one of the most beautiful shots I've seen. Made me thankful I waited for the Criterion 4K disc, which is an incredible transfer. I still have a lot of Scorsese blind spots, Mean Streets is just around the corner, ordered both during the last Criterion sale.
I just watched the British Open Matte version of Taxi Driver. it is so very different and amazing to see.
I dont know how long it will be available... but for those that like to see working copies/scans... here ya go.

To Have and Have Not
Criterion has a bunch of Howard Hawks films this month, and I've never seen this one before. It parallels Casablanca in many ways. Humphrey Bogart plays an American fishing boat captain who sticks his neck out when he doesn't need to. The film is set before the US enters WWII, and Bogart's character helps the French Resistance soon after Germany occupied France.
Cast features Lauren Bacall who was 19 at the time, Walter Brennan as Bogart's mostly drunken friend, and the great Marcel Dalio. Also featured Hoagy Carmichael singing a few songs, but the standout is "Hong Kong Blues," includes the original unexpurgated lyrics.
Features the famous scene where Bacall tells Bogart how to whistle: "You put your lips together and blow."
