Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Yeah I've done this. I even included an American Christmas Carol (1979) once.

Not the worst version of the story though. The very worst version is a BBC production with Guy Pearce from 2019, it was horrendous.
I just love the story, and the Dickens novella is maybe my favourite novella by anyone. Audible UK has a superb version read by Tom Baker (the 4th Doctor Who)
**** it, I'm going to dig out all the good versions (and most of them are good to great) and watch them again in December.
Charles Dickens is my favorite writer. And I agree the novella holds it's own against any novella. This story could be read any time of year and has universal topics. Like several of you guys, I will hunt down any version to see at least once. I wasn't sure if the Kelsey Grammer musical television version was going to be any good, but even it had at least one catchy tune. I would have loved to have seen in person Patrick Steward doing a one man performance on stage.

My parents finally got around to seeing the movie Sinners. My parents have been in the music business for many decades. My Mother said that when my Father saw who was playing the older Sammie during the mid-credit scene, that my Father's jaw dropped open and he even shed a tear. The casting was spot on in many ways.

film still holds up but doesn't age well - it's noticeably dated and very slow and boring outside of some big action scenes - if it came out today it'd be a complete flop
he still liked it though and we're going to move onto T2 next - which is the far better film and one which i'm hoping will hold up better as well

They’re honestly such different movies, not dissimilar to Alien and Aliens. T1 is an outrun thriller with a lot of great vibes. T2 is a superb action film.

True Story
I've never seen Once Upon A Time.
Until now, I've always associated that meme with Wolf of Wall Street, which I have seen 5+ times.

Dickens is a favorite of mine too ... Scrooge my favorite fictional character. I once did a Christmas talk in a philosophy club on Dickens. He was a prolific walker around London, probably percolating ideas as he perambulated around the Old City. (Have you been?)
As the story goes, I think legit, as he walked by a cemetery in London, he saw the name Ebenezer on a tombstone, and hijacked it into his Christmas tale.
I'm not sure if I have seen a version I didn't like. I had some trouble with that Bill Murray version ... seemingly always resisting watching it. Too zany. That recent BBC version one was a trip.
Was it you that commented a few years ago that I had given a fictional hand rundown using J-4 off-suit, saying I solved the Robbi mystery long before it even happened? I couldn't find the post about it.

There’s some pretty corny dialogue in t2, but Patrick’s performance has aged superbly.
Calling The Terminator is nuts. It's one, long chase scene. It's fantastic and holds up today just fine.
The English Patient
Though I read the novel a long time ago, I had never gotten around to watching the film. It blew me away, but almost anything with Juliette Binoche does.
The story reveals itself slowly as does memory. What do we remember? Can we hang on to those memories?
I started watching it lying in bed with my wife or my girlfriend but was tired and fell asleep almost immediately. Now, I can't remember who was next to me in bed. I do remember that whoever it was loved it. I wish I could remember who it was.
Anyway, a brilliant, epic, and moving film.

Hah, was watching Peacemaker last night, and in that, Patrick has the line 'come with me if you want to live.'
Beast of War (2025)
Grim and effective flick regarding a group of WW II Aussie soldiers stranded at sea and menaced by a hungry great white shark.
Primitive War (2025)
Brainless and somewhat overlong but pretty fun and entertaining b-movie in which soldiers in 'Nam go up against dinosaurs.
For Halloween I watched Creepshow (1982), a great little classic anthology from George Romero and am currently watching Halloween III Season of the Witch (1982), which is my favourite of the series and which I watch every Halloween.

the pacing is glacial compared to action films today - the first half of the film doesn't have any lines for the lead human and only 2-3 throwaway lines for sarah connor - it's all setup, which occurs at an incredibly slow speed compared to today's films - it requires patience for an expected payoff that only comes because it comes with a legendary reputation
