nonna didn't have any of those problems

yep because she had children and grandchildren: since forever, the best and only source of long lasting happiness for women.

So anyway, yeah I have my reasons for not empathizing. Thank you all for the demo

I think men should take responsibility for fixing the problems they face under a system they created and benefited from for much of recorded human history. I don’t mean this to say there is collective guilt, because men who exist today did not actively choose to live under patriarchy and many of them, especially lower status males, do in fact suffer under this system.

I agree. but I wonder if this concept would apply for other privileged or oppressive groups. in particular for certain religions, ethnicities, and countries.

I’m not sure exactly what point you’re trying to make, but in general anyone who benefits from a system, whether that be the patriarchy or white privilege or capitalism, is subject to ethical obligations, especially if dismantling that system is a moral imperative rooted in justice and equality.

I was not alive to own slaves, but I am still morally obligated to combat systemic racism as I knowingly benefit from that same system. Inaction is a form of participation. You don’t need to have built the system yourself to recognize yourself as a participant.

The problem isn’t patriarchy, or white privilege, or capitalism. The problem is reality turning up the heat. If you’re going to leave it up to men like me to fix society on our own, which is fine, then don’t pretend like you understand the deeper levels of causation and how to properly respond.

Like I mentioned in another discussion, the ark has already been built. I’m just trying to get a rough idea of the heat level.

I should’ve tagged rococo in that one.

I could be missing a lot but I'm not really seeing Mamdani advocating for anything that I would consider radical in regard to his housing ideas.

I frequented a lefty domain and some of the enlightened souls actually thought his rent freeze was some free rent (covid type emergency) and then doubled down on it and thought that was a good idea - which I honestly can't think how a human can think that that would be a good move.

But the guy isn't advocating for that. He want's to freeze rate increases. Whether that actually makes a big difference remains to be seen, but I don't think it holds a candle to just taxing the rich and using that money well.

You also have a moral obligation to make sure the cure isn’t worse than the disease. So in trying to dismantle capitalism for instance you can’t just say that because capitalism has problems that means socialism is the solution. Or because there’s systemic racism that means affirmative action is automatically the solution. Or because there’s systemic discrimination towards women that means every prescription a feminist makes is correct.

I’m pretty sure I can say that women doing better is not an inherent problem for men unless those same men have a vested interest in maintaining the system as it is, and that zero-sum mindsets such as yours are a big part of the problem. I personally refuse to spend energy or empathy on men who are committed to being part of the problem.

Because I said women doing better is an inherent problem for men, right? lol

Why are immigrants 4x more likely to become millionaires than native born citizens? Do you think its because they aren't indoctrinated into thinking the American dream is dead?

So what ?
Doesnt change anything on what I said .

Unless you believe everyone can be millionaires at “the same time” …
Think about for 1 sec.

Fwiw never heard before the American was about becoming millionaires or billionaires but more about if you work hard , you will have a decent life and be able to elevate your living standard …

AI Overview
The "American Dream" is a national ethos centered on the belief that anyone in the United States can achieve success and upward mobility through hard work and determination, regardless of their background. This ideal, popularized in the 20th century, often includes the pursuit of material wealth, homeownership, and a comfortable life. However, the specific definition and attainability of the American Dream have been debated and reinterpreted throughout history.

And that is all corrolated about wages worth something -> the actual money you get paid with is valuable .
Something that disappeared a while ago.

you can today as well if the square feet they bought in the 80s are ok with you as well as the same expenses for technology and stuff. you can actually get a tad more for a family of four than in the past. Median house size per person DOUBLED in 50 years. 2x. They lived in smaller houses. Did you know that? or you just checked median house prices without correcting for that?

I won’t response without a link.
A picture by itself can mean anything without context shrug .
Just the title “new single family” is strange .

In other news, Wuthering Heights was also a terrible book.

Never read the book, but I liked the song by Kate Bush.

it's "new single family houses". new construction of houses for single families, so the detached on 4 sides house with garden, not apartments or multifamily units.

houses are far bigger today kn the USA than they were before, and that is with shrinking household size (=number of people in households)

If you drive through an upper middle class American suburb, you would be shocked how many houses (especially big ones) are owned by retired people whose children left a long time ago. Many places they have to bus kids in from inner cities just to keep the schools running, so few kids live in the neighborhoods. So houses getting bigger doesn't necessarily mean the average family is getting more for their money, as retired people own so many big houses.

I have heard it argued that American's main dysfunction is that we are a welfare state for the elderly, with elderly hoarding housing being one of many mechanisms. Obviously things would probably be better if retired people didn't hoard wealth in this way; but I dont really know a politically viable way to solve the problem at this point.

As much as it sounds good in abstract to just build a bunch of housing for families and have housing prices depressed. So much of the middle/upper-middle class (full disclosure including myself) has so much of their personal wealth invested in their primary house that it just isn't politically or economically viable to pull the rug out now.

by Luciom

sorry but you don't know what you are talking about here.

You could say that of all his posts about international politics. They’re laughably bad.

by Luciom

You are over reacting a bit. There is , among z gen people, a realization of the idea that college doesn't necessarily guarantees a decent middle class life, especially if you take too much debt to go through it.

The reason the middle classes are getting crushed is that the elites who you kowtow to have more or less finished with excavating wealth from the poor and have turned to the next level up where there are greater gains to be made.

Their new instrument of excavation is AI and many middle class jobs will probably be lost to it, with fewer gains.

Because they're self-selected to be go-getters who often have had to work very hard to get here.

See, now you've really gotten to the heart of the issue. The internet was a mistake. Before, the ****ups of every generation had to wallow in their misery in relative obscurity. Now, because we live in the future and despite being broke and useless, those people have a computer in their pocket 100,000 times more powerful than what we used to land on the moon, and they use that

I know you thought you were describing other groups of people, but you’ve depicted modern incel culture perfectly.

Talking of which…

there is no patriarchy anymore, the system is heavily rigged to favor women and has been for decades at this point. You managed to fully emasculate society and most importantly to create longhouses in all relevant steps of the growth path of an individual. The education system is militarily controlled by women and manifests the worst of women pulsions. The rule following require

Sorry the girls in your college classes ignored you.

This seems totally normal.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has reposted and praised a video interview of a self-described Christian nationalist pastor whose church doesn't believe women should be allowed to vote.

Doug Wilson, senior pastor of Christ Church in Idaho, said during the interview with CNN that, "Women are the kind of people that people come out of."

"The wife and mother, who is the chief executive of the home, is entrusted with three or four or five eternal souls," he continued.

In the CNN interview, Wilson also defended previous comments where he had said there was mutual affection between slaves and their masters. He also said that sodomy should be recriminalized. The Supreme Court invalidated sodomy laws in 2003.

In his repost of the interview on the platform X, Hegseth added, "All of Christ for All of Life."
