William Castle was the OG of the in-theater gimmicks IIRC, e.g. The Tingler
Slowest time of year at the bar I work at plus no sports, so flipping around I saw there was an Alien binge on SyFy.

Much much better than I remembered, really want to sit down and watch the Assembly Cut now.

Production values and non-Ripley acting were reminiscent of Futureworld, Logan’s Run, and The Last Dinosaur. But I looked it up and was happily wowed out loud that Dan Hedaya is still alive!
Streaming now on Criterion is 32 Short Films About Glen Gould. I saw this about thirty years ago but remembered little of it. I loved it then, and I rate it as a great biopic, a genre I like but not mainstream biopics for the most part.
Glen Gould, the great pianist, led a strange life. He was probably autistic or had Asperger's. An early one of the 32 films shows him doing calculations, such as 87×27, in his head as a young child.
The film explores his character exceptionally well.
I find that some other mainstream biopics really don't dwell on the person. Raging Bull and Lawrence of Arabia are great.
But I like Mishima and especially Derek Jarman's Wittgenstein even more. See for yourself.

Bring Her Back - Michael and Danny Phillipou's follow up effort after the terrific film, Talk to Me. This one is a homerun all day, a big step up from Talk to Me. It's a shocker they got Sally Hawkins to play the lead. The premise? Two children lose their father to suicide, they get put into the system and are going to a foster home together. The foster mother (Hawkins) only wanted the young girl, but accepted the young boy as well, who is on the verge of turning 18 and can apply to become legal guardian for his sister.
Hawkins teeters on the edge of being just a little bit off, but not completely over the top ridiculous. She says and does things that might seem a little odd, but as the story unfolds you learn there's something far more sinister going on with her and her little boy, Oliver. It's not the kind of horror film with a ramping up score with jump scares. Instead it crawls under your skin, unnerves you and takes you to some incredibly dark places that made me afraid of humanity. It's an extreme look at mourning the loss of a loved one and what we do with that energy once they're gone. For anyone squeamish, A LOT of harm falls upon children in this movie. I'm actually quite shocked this played theatrically. My best friend gave me a bit of a warning, "I'm a hardcore freak and even this put me off a bit at times."
I'm excited for anything these guys do in the future. I became an instant fan after Talk to Me, then I discovered their YouTube channel RackaRacka which shows the canvas they're working with. Big big fan of Bring Her Back.
I’m pretty sure I saw Genius Within instead of 32 Films, though it could’ve been the other way around, or even both, but not neither.
My tolerance level for harm to kids in movies is really low, which is funny because I hate the little bastards in real life.

Loved it. Something subtle I noticed is how old Sammie's vocal timbre is more of a baritone where younger Sammie was more bassy. The male vocal does tend to get higher pitched with age.
Could very well just be a coincidence with the casting of Buddy Guy, but if it was intentional. Genius.

Larry Fishburne (yes, he's Larry in the credits) is a police officer recruited by Charles Martin Smith to go undercover to get to the kingpin of the cocaine trade. Also stars Jeff Goldblum and Clarence Williams III.
Good neo-noir, which bears a passing resemble to Chinatown, except Fishburne's character doesn't quite "forget it "

Happy Gilmore 2 is unbelievable. A rich man's vanity project that is so incredibly bad that it defies explanation. He has cast his actual wife and daughters to be in the movie. While they're not bad, per se, it's still embarrassing.
Somehow, many pro golfers and other celebrates appear in this one, from Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus to and Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McElroy.
I laughed one time in a 2 hour comedy movie. Once. The rest of the time I was sitting there with my mouth open in astonishment over how badly written and performed this movie is. It's mostly callbacks to the first movie and cameos.
How can Adam Sandler be such a fantastic dramatic actor and be so bad at what is supposed to be his bread and butter?
Albert Brooks, right? I've been wanting to see that.
Prey the Predator prequel set in 1719 Comanche territory is very solid. Beautiful locations, cute dog, good hth combat. Bit grrtly power, but no big deal. There’s a new one set in the far future coming out in November.
This sounds like the coolest thing in the world.Anyone in LA or Dallas check this out yet?
I'll have to check it out. I didn't know they were showing The Matrix. They show NFL and College football games and I'm planning to go this season. It's supposed to be really incredible.

I've seen it at least 40 times. Worth seeing it again?

In The Mood for Love was on TCM late one night (early one morning?) when I came home after poker. Watched a little bit before bed. I could see why you guys are so enthralled.
