So using this metric you would argue whites and non Muslim East Asians are generally smart, while browns and blacks aren't?

I said people who believe dumb things are dumb by default. I didn't say people who don't believe dumb things are smart by default.

So, given your inability to parse this basic difference, and the fact that you are white, no.

It seems to me, that not allowing for the possibility of something that can't be measured is not too bright.

The space of possibilities of things that "can't be measured", as you put it, is limited only by the imagination. For example, there *could* be an invisible gnome that lives in my back garden that watches over my every move and might get angry and send me to roast over an open fire for eternity after I die. Or it could be an invisible teapot. Or a flying spaghetti monster that lives on the planet Zorgon and is going to **** me up with its noodly appendages.

Am I not too bright that I don't concern myself too much with these possibilities?

What about Isaac Newton?

Ok, multiple fields of endeavour.

Joking aside - it was a different time, pick someone in the post enlightenment era. And yes, I am aware that these people probably exist, but they are exceedingly rate.

That's a great post but there IS a flying spaghetti monster so I don't know why you included that in the hypotheticals.

You’re greatly underestimating the power of religious brainwashing on children. In many religious communities to reject that religion at any age is tantamount to becoming a social pariah and risks parental and familial rejection.

I didn't say you had to publically reject anything. This is about what you think.

If only there was a way to reasonably measure smartness to avoid personal definitions like this, and if only we had a thread on that in this very section of this very forum!

Not letting me have my personal definition is very radical leftist of you.

No. If you don't want to concern yourself with the possibilities that's your own concern. It's your insistence that others follow your beliefs that makes you stupid. (See, two can play at your game.)

Jesus man, I took a nap for a couple of hours, and I've had more engagement with that one post than probably for all my other posts for the last month combined.

I didn't say you had to publically reject anything. This is about what you think.

What people think is also very much affected by upbringing.

There are a few good ways to "measure smartness." None of them have anything to do with IQ tests though. Mostly questions about vaccines, the moon landings, covid, and stuff like that.

Sometimes it's as easy as putting a pack of crayons on the table in front of someone and see how long it takes them to get them in their mouth.

I didn't insist on others believing anything, I told you things others might believe that make me think they're stupid. (See the difference?)

by jalfrezi m

Ok, in which case your upbringing might make you stupid. No argument from me there.

Okay, I thought it was implied, but for the simple minded I've added a few words.

You seem to be agreeing with Dunyain's suggestion that brown-skinned people are stupid.

by tame_deuces m

Clever people can believe stupid ****, and to make matters worse they often believe in stupid **** in a clever way.

Can? Sure. But I don’t think that’s a good description of anti vaxers who believe stupid stuff in a stupid way. If you confidently believe the covid vaccine is dangerous but also can’t understand the basic statistical set up of medical testing you’re just an idiot.

I wonder if their truck costs more than your car though.

I'm currently in a red part of California but no coal rolling here.

It's a new, 2025 Elantra in dark blue, $30k, pretty slick, I bought it like 2 weeks ago. I know little about vehicles, but their truck was hideous, almost as ugly as the CyberTruck, if you can believe it. I hate the feeling of utter hopelessness in terms of getting back at creeps like this. I wanted to jot down the plate, track the car, and key the **** out of it when they're inside of whatever meth haven they get weird in. But I also know I don't really have that dog in me to go John Wick on some rednecks who presumably own 50 guns to my zero.

I'm glad to know you haven't been coal rolled. It ****in' sucks.

by Didace m

Okay, I thought it was implied, but for the simple minded I've added a few words.

Anyway, it's not about "following my beliefs", it's about being able to think critically and not believe dumb **** that can't possibly be true. It seems that implicit in your comment that atheism is a belief like religion is a belief. For the avoidance of doubt, it is not, unless you also consider "believing in Santa Claus" and "not believing in Santa Claus" to be "beliefs" on an equal footing.

Atheism is an absence of belief, not a belief.

It's not a belief in the same way that cold is not hot.

by jalfrezi m

Most people are pretty ****ing stupid, and brown skinned people are not somehow immune from this basic fact.

by d2_e4 m

If most people are pretty stupid why are you singling out religion as an indicator when it would be simpler just to say any human?

by Didace m

Okay, I thought it was implied, but for the simple minded I've added a few words.

It would help the convo a lot if you actually addressed what d2 claimed instead of trying to repackage his posts into things that are easier for you to swat down.

Like, for example, d2 saying

I wouldn't call anyone who believes in a personal god "smart",

is very different from d2 saying he doesn't not allow for the possibility of something that can't be measured. He also hasn't insisted that others adopt his point of view or anything like it. It's possible he thinks people who believe in personal gods are dummies but that also there's some tiny possibility that they are correct.

Trolly coming in with a serious post. What has the world come to?

The end of times.

by jalfrezi m

If most people are pretty stupid why are you singling out religion as an indicator when it would be simpler just to say any human?

Because it is a simple and crude test which helps me shortlist the humans that might not be stupid and not waste time on finer grained measures for those that definitely are. Think of it as one of those colanders with the really big holes.
