Cliff notes: Japanese ground-based space mission has succesfully approached a piece of uncontrolled space junk, a first in history.
This is an impressive mission, and an important one. The amount of junk in orbit is increasing at a dangerous rate, and we need to be able to clean up debris and junk. If not, we risk a scenario known as "Kessler Syndrome". That basically means we get so much debris that it collides with debris to create even more debris, which again causes a lot of smaller collisions... rinse, repeat. Ultimately this might create so much clutter that we in effect trap ourselves on our own planet.
