Well... he has many bunches of money from Man City & Nike. Many bunches. More per month than any England cricketer would get per year

& he's also been playing for Norway since he was 14 & was playing for their senior team at age 18 iirc, which was before he left Norway to play overseas.

He was born in Leeds, which was his point.
But when your dad is a Norway international, I don’t think it is ever going to be an option.

Hmm will check him out. I stopped following Sumo when I left the UK as I can’t find it on the TV out here. That was about the time he debuted.

I spent 5 mins researching & saw this - have you seen?

Super interesting read, thanks.

Hakuho was uniquely dominant because he had both the highest peak and the longest career at the top level. Hell, he went 15-0 16 times, including right before retirement.

Since he retired the field has been wide open in the past couple of years.

Fabian Ruiz 50 games unbeaten for Spain

by feel wrath

that's a good one.

Magnus Carlsen

But yeah Messi is easily the GOAT. What level are these last two Argentina teams on without him? USA? Canada?

Individually maybe, but at least the Argentina players understand football basics like space

Holy **** you're not lying!

```
He earned his 50th cap for Spain in the 1–0 extra-time victory over Argentina in the World Cup final, remaining unbeaten in all his appearances for the national team.[38]
```

by Pablito

Yeah man, Messi isn't the goat. He had 0 shots on target in this world cup final therefore everything he did before this final means nothing.

0 shots on target in wc final > 8 ballon d'ors.

To put it charitably, SRM lives in the moment when it comes to his hot sports takes.

Better to live in the moment than die in the past

God damn, that was a good one

even without messi julian alverez and lautaro martinez is a pretty good front two

Maybe if they dont tailor everything to some old dude who wont defend back ever they can actually show some quality football throughout a match
(same goes for Portugal)

They were lucky to outlive cabo verde and egypte ffs
The var had a "mistaken identity" so they could play 10 men of switzerland
Against lolengland they played football for only the last 15 minutes

They have spent more minutes at this world cup picking fights than playing football and all that so one geriatric man can score against algeria, austria, jordan, egypt and cabo verde.
Thats the list of opponents he scored against this WC, you dont get them much cheaper than that.

I know ARG finished 2nd but lets not pretend they or Messi had a good WC.

And till this day I consider Cruijff a bigger GOAT than him by far. If Cruijff saw his team play like ARG did whole tourney he would step up and change something instead of creating a minions killing army around him. Thankfully football won

I'm sure that sitting Messi would have resulted in far less shithousery from Argentina. 🙄

This guy gets it

On no level at all in this entire ****ing tournament did argentina play world class except for England’s choke job

If Argentina got to PKs and won they would have been by far the most fraudulent champion in history

Let that sad ass midget cry on the pitch wearing his stupid 2nd place medal. Mbappe taking the golden boot from him and Spain taking the trophy from him is the only happy ending here

Ignoring this entire world cup, his tenure at PSG, Inter Miami and the Ballon D'or he won whilst playing for Inter Miami. He's still the goat.

No disrespect to the late great but I think you're a bit biased lol. I do agree with being thankful football won, Argentinians are bad winners and bad losers but that takes nothing away from the greatness that is Messi.

Gibberish

No.

I apologize…..for nothing

It seemed like that is exactly what Argentina was tying to do. Or at least a late finish.

But LOL at saying Messi isn't the GOAT based off of one game when he's 39 and still scored 8 goals this WC.

It's the same thing with people slagging modern CR7. Messi and Ronaldo are sports old and mostly washed. But overall, they're still two undeniable GOATs of the game.

messi was also just very good every time he touched the ball yesterday

I was a huge Cruyff fan (and still am) but remember watching him disappear completely in his prime in the biggest game of his life, the 1974 WC final. He's in the bracket below Messi. Neeskens was the star of the Dutch team that day (and some others too).

Not that I agree with anything Slugant just posted, but I have to well actually you if you're going to omit that Cruijff got that penalty kick for dribbling right through the Germans like they weren't there. One such feat is enough for an historic final on a different day, calling it disappearing is a bit rich

Soccer a tough sport to be a goat in. Even if you are way better than everyone else not much you can do on your own.

I understood the point but my point was that he pretty much grew up in Norway so by the time he was internationally‘noticeable’ it was too late because he was already playing for Norway.

Messi is far from washed. He just dragged a garbage Argentina roster to a World Cup final. Other than Messi, which Argentina player gets into France or Spain's starting XI? Perhaps Alvarez for Spain, or it's no one.

Cristiano has been ineffective at this stage for years. He may have been Mr Champions League a decade ago but Portugal have been better without him since at least 4 years ago.

And I don't want to hear anything about Argentina's "easy path" considering Portugal would have had the same path, but they couldn't even beat DR Congo, which would have won them their group and placed them in the same quadrant as Argentina.

I respect Cristiano's career, but Messi carrying Argentina to 2 World Cup finals at 35 and 39 has only made the gap between them wider, when Messi was already considered the better player before 2022. Respectfully, never compare the Saudi penalty merchant to Lionel Messi ever again.

Guys, we got 22 years of Messi playing professional football at the top level - maybe use that to make your case for/against the GOAT and not yesterday's match when his team barely got the ball - with him being 39 years old and all
