1/3 Grinding and Bankroll
Hi all,
First post in this specific forum. Normally post in NL Strategy. Hoping for some feedback about bankroll manageme
After a busy day at work played a little and chatted up a therapist and we got to talking, it was nice to connect. He said there’s good money in private mental health law if I ever considered it I would be well positioned with my three bar admissions.
Ran pretty well at plo making over $3k on the session, seems like a theme lately is just running pure. Got lucky and folded out a better flush with 87653ds in a bloated pot and scooped. At the end lost with wrap and fd to a set but won a smaller side pot where my pair of 7s beat his pair of 4s after he missed his nfd. Doing really well this month already, up $14k in under a week. Might be another record-breaking month if things keep going this way.
After a slog of a day at work, played a little session and didn’t run as good as I’ve gotten used to lately, running nfd 2p nut gutter into a turned set, as well as trying to bluff in a double board bomb pot (don’t try!), also lost TT764 on AT34hh to two pair nfd all in ott for a dry side pot of $1200 and a main pot of $2100 against the bare wheel where I had about direct odds, but at least made a comeback crai QJ986cc on T63Jcc versus a delayed chat from naked AAQ and AAJ44ds l/rr $250 got it in on a safe looking 622 flop in a three way pot versus an aggro donk bettor pro x who had a worse overpair, probably figuring she was calling my shove so she may as well shove herself, before I had to quit to get sleep for a busy day today with a hearing this afternoon I needed as much rest as possible for. Ended up losing around $1400 but played valiantly, just didn’t have enough time to realize my edge due to responsibilities.
Put in an accommodation request for telework at the job, hopefully will be granted and no funny business for disclosing my disability.

to review in 1 week, 7.5 hour hearing that ended at 9pm, and I lost. I think the job no longer is giving more than it is taking and it’s time to move on again now. It was a good ride and I did a lot of good for sure.
Just Saw this post for some reason! Keep up the good job!
I’ve had a headache since the hearing and I didn’t feel well at all yesterday, it really took a toll on my health. Took a day to relax, had a massage, tried to sleep in, played some poker but ran bad. Lost double board bomb pot with nut straight plus redraw and a set, lost AQQds to KK226, won most of it back at 1/2 plo then the game got boring so I played short stack at 2/5/10 for a while lost a couple all in spots ahead A8s
I feel like I am part of a system rigged against my clients and I can’t do them Justice. A system I don’t want to be complicit in by participating in it. At my marathon herring the judge overseeing it was new and shadowing an old time former prosecutor whose brother has been committed to a mental facility his whole life. I didn’t expect to get a favorable outcome under those circumstances.

Good luck! Hope whatever you do brings you happiness.
Yesterday I ran meh and lost some, but not too badly. The hospital in this case blocked our expert from evaluating my client and may have tampered with a witness’ testimony who I subpoenaed. And I get personal insults from them as well. And my client is locked up. Because the hospital caved to her daughter’s threats when they were about to discharge her last week. So disappointing. And the judge went with all this and was complicit with the hospital. :/
Was in for $10,000 tonight at 5/5 and was down $8k mainly due to bomb pots, but I made a roaring rebound, profiting over $4k...! Phew! Game still running, might hop in again.
Played 1/2 through the early morning until around midday, got AA or similar in pre several times against the VIP and won nearly all of them and made another $4k or so, for around a $7k profit on the night! E.g., AA665ds, AAJT9ss, AKK75ss (lost), AAQ42ds. Took a little sleep/long nap per friendÂ’s advice because I couldnÂ’t stay up all day to reset my schedule, I was just too tired. Gonna sleep early tonight instead. Played some 10/25 hold em as well, was a nice change of pace, I still have the skills in that game but imo there arenÂ’t as many profitable spots compared to plo, just too few playable hands and equities run so far apart it would be hard to just bluff it into a win every time.
Did a really good workout as well, can tell IÂ’m getting stronger. Up to around 40 push ups now in one set and 12 burpees. Up over $17k this month already, good place to be 1/3 of the way through.
Having gotten my mind off work over the weekend and taken some mental space, I think I can keep going with the job for the time being. It’s just really brutal in the moment. I have a call with my supervisor tomorrow and I’m waiting for my telework accommodation request results which will determine the course moving forward.
Also I am reminded how terrible my disability is for my emotional stability and motivation. I’m glad I waited a few days before quitting, the time certainly helped me cool off. I do think a different position might be better suited for me though, so I’ll keep a lookout for any opportunities.
After a short sleep per a friend’s suggestion so as not to ruin my sleep schedule, I played a session in the late afternoon and made a couple thousand. I don’t recall any tough spots at all, just easy money. AK854ds beat AA and a Q-high rundown mostly all in pre.
Got into a small tiff with a former nba player the other night at 5/5, at showdown after he jammed and I called he said I have a set and I said I have too set and I showed, he then said let me see what else I have and tabled a straight on both runouts and scooped. I asked why he had me show and slowrolled. He got upset at me for disrespecting him.l and said he’d be on my a$$. He left and came back 20 minutes later carrying a water and a soda (not a gun…!).
We later made up because he had cool fashion style. Apparently he did time for murder and got out of prison early and my other buddy told me not to get him riled up. Ayeee! Funny to come face to face with someone similar to who I’ve helped during my past career doing postconviction work.
Yesterday was a slow session, a couple bad calls and some runbad, and not a lot of premium hands. Posted a modest loss around $1,400 or so. Lost TT to 66 on Q66T9 and second nut flush to nut flush after a sneaky bet/x/bet line. Top set got outdraw as well. Games were just ok to be honest, a little slow. Played mix a bit too and lost with a pat T low in 2-7 dramaha and chopped with A234r in Badacey.
Just started playing more live plo recently (4card) at mgm detroit. Game is crazy action but the variance is insane it’s 1/2/10. Btn straddles won 21k my first month playing it full time then the next month lost 3k lol. Really think the biggest edge in these games is just being disciplined preflop and avoiding tilt.

Yeah starting hand selection is a very big component. “Play good hand, hit flop, realize equity” as my elite plo player friend says.
Yesterday won about a grand from plo, played a little 2/5 and lost to a whale, both in 3! pots, to his draws with top pair.
Chatted up a friendly dude from California visiting, was enjoyable because he was super chill. Got to talking about how I got into poker and I got a chance to reflect on how far I’ve come over the years from my free bar poker days.
Had an easy work day with no hearings, but sadly work came back and said no to additional telework days and instead said I could have a delayed start time and time in the employee wellness room. Not sure if that means I am leaving the job at this point, I asked them to reconsider given I’m thinking about leaving just so there’s nothing unspoken and everyone is on the same page. I was feeling a little sad thinking about quitting, but then I also remembered all the suffering I’ve gone through as well.
I asked around people who play if they enjoyed poker and they said yes, they love the game, the flexibility.
At least in some good news I continued to run really well at poker, winning over $8,000 on the session between 1/2 and 5/5. At 1/2 won TT822 on J92 versus JJ, making quads, and at 5/5 scooped AAJJ2ds three ways all in pre and top set KK held on KJ8cc versus a combo draw. Also won ATT98ds on T94cc my nut flush draw going b/b/j and rivering the nut flush.
The player I beat all three hands quit and the game wasn’t that good anymore so I left and played mix for a little and even won a few hundred there. Up $27,000 this month now, well ahead of schedule for reaching my monthly $30k profit goal.
One of the poker players at 5/5, a reg, mentioned he used to play in Dubai and win a million dollars there in cash games. Someone just wrote him a check for $900,000 after losing a session to him and it cleared. Talk about money, puts things into perspective.
Even though things with work haven’t been going as well as I would like, I did save up enough to pay off most of my mortgage today which is nice, taking my financial advisor’s advice and doing that now as opposed to continuing to invest it all. The guaranteed return of my 5.75% interest rate and peace of kind was more important to him and I agreed. Should be able to pay it off entirely within a few months now.
Ran bad yesterday, losing two pair to draws with AKJT4ds at 10/10/50 and A4 to T4 at 2/5, we both had two pair and he rivered a flush. Also ran KK977ds into AAQJ6 pre, it was a wild table with a player auto-3! every hand. I had 43% for the side pot so not the worst shape in the world. Board ran out T4T43 no flush unfortunately, but at least the action player won the main pot with quad 4s. I later lost with top two k flush draw turned wrap to AA nfd rivered the nut flush. Action raised with bottom set J flush draw.
I can already feel a difference in my mental state after just one day of commuting again, and the energy depletion was palpable yesterday. It’s not going to get any better and it’s probably going to get worse like it did last year. Sigh.
I’m bored and felt like picking myself up by posting my lifetime graph, proud of myself. Not sure if I am going to quit the job or not. Still on the fence. Poker player who still works said he doesn’t regret it and he’s about to retire and he’s a winning player. Maybe I should tough it out and try the commute out and see how it goes. I’ve done other hard things in life too.

Yesterday I was tired from driving to and from work again but I played as well as I could anyway and made over $5,000. Had a drink for a change, a sparkling white wine, and put me in good spirits. It was a heavy pour and I am a smiling happy drunk I guess. Someone asked what was going on with all the drinkers today being sober and all the sober folks drinking at the mix and I said it was the smoke from the wildfires in California. “California? Now California is in Canada?” said a grumpy reg. “It starts with a c,”‘said my friend. “It’s supposed to rain the next two days.” “That will hopefully put out the fires,” I said. We had a laugh.
A rude reg from hustler took my seat at 10/25 that I left as I was about to sit back in it and I called him out for being a typical L.A. a$$. He said I was a no good lawyer or I wouldn’t be playing so much poker and I called him out for being a loser poker player with no future.
Ran good at plo, AKKds won mostly all in pre and top set held three ways against toxic pro and another reg who usually has my number. Surpassed $200k this year and around $30k this month now. Could be a record breaking year if all goes well the last 5.5 months.

why would you do that when you could buy VOO that has averaged a 15% return over the past 10 years. Furthermore mortgage interest is deductible on taxes so really on that 5.75% post deductions it's more like 4%. Really makes no sense to pay off mortgages in the US.

Average returns are not likely going to be as robust moving forward, was what they told me. They were looking at more like 6% on average moving forward. And I normally take the standard deduction.
Poker room is slow today with no 5/5 running, just double board games, and 1/2 plo5 is underwhelming, so I am going to take the afternoon to take care of myself and get a haircut and beard trim and water the plants. Will be good for my self-esteem and confidence.
Ran meh yesterday, and was a little slow session. Colluder husband was glaring at me while I was in a hand after I got 4! and I told him not to stare at me once again and called him a loser. My buddy told me husband got stacked later after I quit which was some Justice. Was in a really good late night game but I was already staying up later than I should so I quit to make my Monday morning wake up a little less painful as I might have one hearing tomorrow.
Lost a double board bomb pot with a set and two pair fd at 5/5. Flopped a straight flush against the nut flush early on but lost elsewhere.
In the meantime I keep working on my fitness goals and I got a lot of compliments on my new haircut and beard trim. People said I looked younger. I had tofu fried rice for dinner which is always good.
Went to bed super early and woke up a few hours into my slumber, had leftover chipotle and a decaf which I'm glad I bought. Watched some cash game content online. In my shorter session, ran good and scooped a multiway all in pre with AAK52ss on flop 552, lol. The dealer didn't do the pots correctly and they had to check the cameras which took 30 minutes to correct but at least it was worth it (for me, anyway!). Still up close to $30k this month; my strat to really focus on my plo volume most of this year is paying off.
Went to bed super early and glad I did because my wake up this morning was much easier. Enjoying hazelnut lattes now on the couch and listening to relaxing morning tunes. Surprised I fell asleep so early to be honest, sometimes it can be hard to.
