Talk About Movies: Part 4

I dug the hell out of Backrooms. It felt like a horror come to life and put on the big screen.

I have a lot of dreams/nightmares where I'm traveling, or walking through buildings and aspects of this is what it feels like. I was completely immersed and couldn't wait for the story to unfold. Loved it from start to finish. I'm super excited for the new wave of young horror filmmakers entering the space.

I'm glad there's an IMAX theater near me that shows 70mm films.

i think the oddyssey will be horrible, but going to see it nonetheless, considering watching troy at home a day or two before first

Just saw the Odyssey - solid enough first 2 hours apart from dialogue and casting. It is definitely as bad as it was being suggested. Last 30 mins is almost comical. Obvious Hollywood ending. Probably Nolan's 2nd worst film but could be his worst if not for the action scenes.

Thats because it SUCKS! I know everybody here loves it but I found it incredibly boring and annoying. I don't get the allure? When I saw it in the theater there were about 12 people there. 6 or 7 of those walked out. I envyed them but stayed to the end. I was with my WWII veteran father who would watch any and all WWII content ever made. As we walked out he said "what the hell was that?"

IMO all the sturm und drang over loopy & elly was a false flag to distract from

Like F1, I would happily pay $30 to watch an abridged version of Odyssey in an IMAX theater.

I like to get on my high horse about why this flick sucks, but I think your dad had the most concise vision.

Backrooms (2026)

I quite liked the first hour of this but then it kinda fell apart and I found its conclusion kinda underwhelming and unsatisfactory. I didn't outright dislike it overall but just felt it coulda been better. In terms of hyped films, I much preferred Obsession

The Furious - threadbare plot, awkward dubbing, insane martial arts action. The fight scenes are long and complex yet easy to follow, because they're so cleanly choreographed and shot.

Darn, they don't make many movies like Day of the Fight anymore! Which I guess is the whole point of the film, the majority of it filmed in black and white with long camera shots which focuses on the dialogues, while the rare colour shots are the protagonist's flashbacks. It definitely has a Rocky (1) feel to it and the appearances of Nick Nolte and Joe Pesci add to its dark tone a la Raging Bull. It cannot recommend this movie enough and for all cinephiles, not just boxing fans 😉

Terrifier 3 won’t be for everyone. Overall it fits in the torture porn category of horror films. There’s a nice blend of practical effects and terrific makeup. Art the Clown grew on me with this one. The first two are a miserable time but this one is quite funny and has a lot of big cameos from folks in the horror world.

Project Hail Mary man it felt good to watch this movie. Gosling’s charisma is off the charts and Rocky is an adorable sidekick. One of the most watchable movies I’ve seen in a long time. The cast is aces. I got emotional during many parts of the movie. Any well executed selfless act in a movie is like my emotional Achilles heel

Admittedly imperfect and certainly not for everyone but I really liked it. The sets were incredible, they really nailed the vibe if you’ve ever spent any time in abandoned or never occupied buildings, malls, schools, the Rio mezzanine, etc.

I assumed the ending would be meh at best and just went with it.

And Hokum is your no. 2 for horror this year?

My only issue with Terrifier 3 is that Art needs to catch more of a beating for the stupid **** he does - sure he will win out as he has to but there doesn't seem any ramification for what he does. Maybe for Terrifier 4 this can change.

I watched Barb Wire (1996) for the first time. A best remake of Casablanca. And the opening credits are in my top 5 opening credits of all time.

Movie of the Year for me so far.

Read Twitter. Everybody there seems to hate it because it's based on Emily Wilson's translation. They believe the film strays too far from the "original."

I don't think they have heard of Milman Parry.

Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie from Matt Johnson (Blackberry) and Jay McCarrol is one hell of an experience. The basic premise is it's about two guys trying to play a show at a Toronto venue. One guy keeps coming up with ridiculous schemes to get in to play, and his buddy kinda goes along with it. During one of their ridiculous plans they accidentally create a functioning time machine and travel back to 2008. They mess some things up, alter the future and try to fix the mess they've made. Much of the film is shot guerilla style on the streets of Toronto. It's kind of like a blend of Back to the Future, Borat, and The Tom Green Show. They don't really hide that they're ripping off previous works, even walk the tight rope of fair use, which I still don't understand but I'm so glad this movie exists.

I kept thinking to myself, “You can tell these guys are close and really love each other!” I had no idea they grew up together and made their own movies growing up. Their antics are hysterical and I love the dynamic of cooky Matt and straight arrow Jay going along with plans to skydive into a Jays ball game so they can announce a show that doesn’t exist but if they manage to pull it off maybe it’ll manifest itself. The guerilla style “Is this actually happening??” Allows the audience to be in on the pranks.

These absolute maniacs love movies and love each other. This is a love letter to movies and themselves. I couldn’t help but get emotional during the conclusion of the film. This is a special one.

There's a bit with pliers and I couldn't get over how much mileage they got out of such a small simple tool. It quickly became a funny gag and a breathtaking device. Multiple "How did they do that?" moments. This is a blast.
