What'd You Shoot Today? (Golf BBV Thread)
I think this forum could use a BBV thread, so here it is.
Brag: Shot 80 today on my home course (par 72) - I'm a 12 hand
40-45-85. 1 birdie, 3 double bogeys. 70.3/133/6121.
The putting did not improve for the most part.
95(48/47) two quadruple bogeys sunk me. Chipping was beyond horrendous. I kept blading it over the green. Ugh.
40 (par 35). No birdies, no double bogeys.
A boring card with all 4s and 5s. Mostly solid ball striking, good chipping, meh putting.
got a sim session tomorrow morning, then walking a tournament round Saturday morning to finalize my bag choice for Ireland at the end of next month. That tourney round will be the first of 9 in 10 days, lots of golf, LGLG!
9 rounds in 10 days went well overall! Outcome goal was to average sub-90 and did that with 88-91-90-90-95-91-85-82-94, with six of the nine rounds being among my eight "counting rounds" for my index now.
Had a round with 3 birdies which was fun, and the 82 featured maybe the best stretch I've played. Par 70, I was +8 thru 8, and was still +9 on 17 tee. Made six pars in that eight hole run.
Looking like maybe 2 rounds between now and leaving for Ireland on July 25, LGLG!
96(46/50) My short game has been really bad. It's all I work on but it's not improving. Yuk.
Back nine was really weird. 10 yards past the green on 11, again on 12, then 20 on 13. Had 105 to the hole on 15 which is normally perfect for my pitching wedge. Hit it 140. I kept thinking there's no way, I must have picked up the wrong club or something. Flew the last 3 greens even when I clubbed down. No clue where i miraculously gained 25-30 yards with my irons all the sudden.
47-47 on a 70.3-134 from 6500 yards. Had a few lip outs for birdie which is annoying. Generally avoided penalties except for a couple blow ups on both 9's. Irons were a little off, and missed 6 greens short/right.
Working on a new swing feel during the round of keeping hands closer to my body through impact. Obviously in practice my hands are further away than I'm feeling like they are, but I think it's promising for club delivery from the inside and reducing my steep issues. Time will tell.

what is your short game plan/strategy, and what are the errors/misses?
Honestly, just get on the green right now. I'm all over the place. One time I'll chunk it completely over, the next I'll get nervous and not get it there. I believe it's gotten in my head now. I work on it a lot on the days I don't play. I'm decent on the practice area but it's not translating to the course.
bb - are you armsy with your short game or are you actually turning your body as you swing? i've found a feel that works for me is keeping my back elbow close to the body and turning my torso (yes, that works for just about everything)
you might also try the same one handed (forward hand) drill around the practice green as well. explore the technique it takes to make slow but solid contact with only one hand, and how you need the body to help as well.

get on the green is definitely a good plan! Do you use one swing and multiple clubs? One club with different swings?
Every week we play a club comp. Along side it we also run our own comp which is a stableford which I run, However the handicaps are a little inflated and move from week to week because the handicaps are inflated it's quite common to see 45+ points.
Someone complained to me last week when I was playing that this system was unfair and he said a particular player "Terry W" was always winning. I personally didn't think this was the case however, I did want to check so I decided to populate all the stats. Turns out "Terry W" has never won 😃
I thought I'd upload them here for no particular reason but I'm actually super happy with the outcome. The screenshot is sorted by total played. I'm the 2nd player "Simon" in this list FYI, This also shows I didn't really take much of a break when I ruptured my achilles 😃

So, I've tried all sorts of things, which is probably why I suck at it so bad. When I first started playing, all I had was a pitching wedge, so that was all I used. It really stunk when I needed to get over a bunker or something like that. I eventually got a 56 degree wedge which helped with that. Then, I got to where I just put the pitching wedge aside and only used the 56.
But now I feel like each has a place. I'm trying to use whichever one seems appropriate.
I've tried all sorts of methods. Keeping my arms and wrists stiff and just moving my body. Punching at the ball. Trying to scoop the ball. Swinging sort of like a normal swing (only not so far back) and controlling the club as it goes forward. Putting the ball at my back foot, then my front foot. I've tried all sorts of things. I'm not consistent with any of them. I get good results occasionally, but I inevitably end up skulling it, or hitting the ground before I get to the ball.
When I first started playing, I hit it on the hosel a lot. At least that isn't happening anymore.
Strangely, I would rather be 100' away from the green than 20. It's those shorter ones where I'm 10' off the green and the pin is 20' from the fringe that I just can't get right. I inevitably either hit it 2 feet, or hit it another 20' past the pin. I just can't get the short chips to work. Usually, if I think I can get it through the grass, I'll just pick up my putter.
Anyways, I'm still trying different things. One of the drills I've seen a lot is just use my trail hand (but I tried the lead hand too, redeye). I tried both today. Neither feels good at all.
I think the only thing to do is to just keep practicing.
I'd say find a thought/plan and stick to it and practice, and also accept that when we are short-sided, often 15 feet past the pin on the green is 100% fine.
I really recommend Dan Grieve's YouTube videos, I really like his stuff, it's all short game stuff. Implementing his concepts has taken my short game from a liability to a (relative) strength. GL!

Thanks, yeah. I just need repetitions. I watched several of his videos. Good stuff.
Chipping was horrendous on the front nine today. Shot 52. I was beginning to wonder why everything has fallen apart. But I cleaned it up on the back for a 42 (94 total). Made several really good chips so maybe there's hope.
June 5th was the day i had to walk off the range before a round because of right elbow tendon pain. hit a medium bucket on Wed without pain with reasonable results, so decided two loops around a 9 hole short course was in the cards this morning for my second round of the year.
recently renovated by Dan Hixon (Bandon Crossing, Sylvies Ranch), tight fairways, small firm greens, decent amount of up and down.
~3200 yards, 58.0/86, three par 4s, the rest 3s. tried to play as boring golf as i could, longest club i brought was a 4 hybrid.
+3 63
two birdies, three bogeys, and an OB double.
3/6 fairways, 10/18 greens, 29 putts (no three putts), 4/7 up & down
haven't played enough to carry an index for a few years, last i did it was 17.4, meaning i beat my course hc by 8 strokes. def helped to play the same holes twice, esp reading putts

Glad you're back at it, red.
