President Donald Trump
I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?
So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at
What do you mean? I concede that I am a pessimist about the future. Maybe that is a sign of age. Maybe that is a sign of my immense frustration with the state of the politics of the country in which I live. But no matter the cause, I see dignity and value in trying to make things as good as we can.
I’m fairly optimistic. We’re definitely in a golden age of scientific achievement that is inconsistent with is inconsistent with societal collapses in history. Maybe within a hundred years technology and scientific progress jusy collapses but that’s like calling a market top to within a week. Easy to try but I’ve never seen anyone do it without just always calling it.

There is ample evidence of environmentally induced societal collapse. Nothing inconsistent with what is happening now.
That golden age of scientific achievement you speak of is real. It's enabling us to better measure the things which have the potential to wipe us out. Unfortunately, the world is not run by scientists. It's run by ruthless people who crave near-term power. They're ignoring the science.
Yes scientists are not in charge. Scientists are also not all saying a collapse is imminent.

You're right. Not all scientists are saying a collapse is imminent.
That's expected .... not all scientists have expertise in phenomena such as the AMOC and how it's collapse would impact human civilization.
The percentage of scientists studying ocean circulation, wind circulation and hydrological cycles is quite small.

I didn't predict a total societal collapse, and my pessisism does not stem from a lack of faith in our ability to make scientific advances.
Yes the thing about science is it provides a unified and interdisciplinary framework. Every small sub field’s work is added to the total body of knowledge.
Give me some coffee, internet, a swimming pool, a steady supply of weed, someone competitive to play ping pong with and a woman to snuggle with ..... I'll be perfectly content.
Coffee isn't so good for the environment either. Coffee doesn't provide anything that is necessary for human health. Coffee farming contributes significantly to deforestation, coffee is relatively water intensive to farm, and coffee obviously cannot be grown in all climates, which means that a large percentage of the coffee that makes its way to supermarkets and coffee shops in the United States has been shipped from quite a ways away.
I find it hard to be pessimistic uf you agree scientific knowledge and technology are going to be much better in 50 years.
Our ability to make scientific advances doesn't inexorably lead to human satisfaction, and I have significant concerns that our ability to achieve scientific advances may outstrip our ability to adapt to those those changes without considerable psychological stress and alienation.

The world is actually being run by wealthy people and businesses. The reason they are ignoring the science is that it will cost them their businesses and investments if we all adapt.
The oil, gas, and coal corporations are donating 97% of their money to republican candidates in the US. And the other 3% are democrats who will refuse to change the way we live.
This isn't the first time that businesses will go under because of industrial improvement. When cars were invented and sold, the horse and buggy industry caved. When micro computers were invented the typewriter businesses went down.
Today is basically similar to when the Tobacco companies in the 1960's were trying to deny that smoking was killing people. Roughly 6 to 10 million people are dying worldwide every year ahead of schedule, because of the air quality. Much of it (like 40%) is indoor related environments which are getting worse because of the added heat. It is actually incredible that the US hasn't nationally required all new buildings to not have natural gas piped in. And all new buildings to have solar panels, partly subsidized by the government.
There is a reason why I'm focused on your preferences.
If you had to choose between
a) a total collapse which kills you and everyone you care about or
b) the adaptations I recommend
which would you choose ?
For some unknown reason .... you refuse to state your preference.

For the record, the Amish were raised in response to a comment that suggested the only way we could possibly survive is with extreme urbanization.
I like electricity and don't suggest we need to give it up.
The oligarchs have done a great job of brainwashing us with a non-stop barrage of polarizing content.
People with a message like mine are not allowed airtime.
Who specifically is not ALLOWING you airtime? Ever heard of Youtube?
Doomsayers are a dime-a-dozen these days. The Insufferable Greta Thunburg got more airtime than you can shake a stick at.
The best-selling non-fiction book for the entire decade of the 1970's was The Late Great Planet Earth by Hal Lindsey.
How about Earth in the Balance by Al Gore?
Trashing the Planet by Dixie Lee Ray was a bestseller.

I got it wrong...
:"The oil and gas industry gave about $24 million in campaign contributions to the members of the U.S. House and Senate expected to be sworn in January 3, 2025, according to a Yale Climate Connections review of campaign donations. The industry gave an additional $2 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign, bringing the total spending on the winning candidates to over $26 million, 88% of which went to Republicans."
It is also noted that since 1990 its about 67% of all contributions have been going to Republicans.
I thought I had read that oil, gas, and coal companies are donating virtually all of their money now to Republicans at 97%, but that isn't the case. Its just 7x the amount that they are giving to Democrats... The donations going to Democrats are basically all people who are voting in congress and the Senate (or campaigning) against restrictions to the use of oil and gas. Like Senator Manchin . So it probably is likely that 97% of all donations are going to people who will vote against restrictions for oil, gas, and coal companies. Which are mostly Republicans...

Right you’re calling the top. Things are better than they were 50 or 100 years ago but they’ll be worse in 50 or 100 more.

we can be both negative and positive about the future. (Personally, I am.)
Like in 1900 the relatively near future can be both catastrophically bad and way better. In may ways it feels similar at the moment - science and tech will likely deliver an awesomely better future but we face a lot of pain on the way.
and there is always some chance we wont make it. (Personally I wont)
