It was definitely rhetoric. It was in response to an insinuation that he has socialist policies and referencing Cuba/Venezuela. It’s like saying “I’m so not socialist that I’m like a moderate Republican from the 80s” also insinuating that the modern Republican party is extremist. I’m not sure why you guys find this so hard to understand.
As for the Republican party, I used to think the same way you do but I find wisdom in the idea that the Republicans shouldn’t be so batshit crazy now. Go figure.

I never claimed that Obama's economic policies were especially progressive. They weren't.

And the same thing applies perfectly to FDR who talked up capitalism and made clear how he completely rejected socialism. These arguments are always so unconvincing because you have to pretend like you can’t tell the difference between Reagan and Obama or Trump and Biden but suddenly see a massive difference between Bernie Sanders and candidates he’s actively campaigned for. It’s just post hoc fine tuned nonsense nobody actually buys.

Just as a fun logic fact for you, if you’re presented with a conjunct and any part of the conjunct is false, then the entire conjunct is false. So he doesn’t have to be denying the part of the conjunct about equal rights, but rather the part about making people in the West Bank and Gaza citizens of Israel 😀
