Why It Gets Truly Insane
1. Invariants (How Math Spots the Difference)
To prove two knots are different, mathematicians use things called invariants. These are properties or blueprints of a knot that never change, no matter how much you twist or stretch the loop.
One of the coolest methods is Jones Polynomials. You essentially look at every single crossing point where the string goes over or under itself, assign a variable (x or y) to the crossing based on its orientation, and compute a massive algebraic equation.
