Last night I sat down at a loose, aggro, straddling and splashy table, and I was not feeling it. Big bluffs and big value bets were hitting the table on the regular and getting called and raised, and my head was not in the right place for being put to the test. I picked up dead even after 30 minutes, before I made a bad decision in an inevitable giant pot.

I chose instead to autopilot through the slot and video poker realms, and I was rewarded with a bit of a sun run. It helped that the Asian Syndicate player on duty had gone home early, and I had the place to myself for a few hours.

I did return to the poker table for the final 90 minutes of the night, and sat down at a more managable table, and I booked a win.

Poker: 2 hours, +$176
Slots: 6 hours, +$664

i have the exact same thought every time i hear the country, but didn't think anyone else would know the reference.

I didn't even know Aruba had poker rooms. If you don't mind small, windy islands, I guess that could be a cool holiday destination.

I am going to go on a little bit of a rant, but as a Canadian (and more specifically a French one), it is quite tilting to not only allocate mid 8 digits annually to the representatives of the UK monarchy, that granted, do represent Canadian somewhat internationally in foreign affairs, but having the Governal General and then UK King sign every law that is voted by our Parliament, is fracking tilting!!! And having a purely symbolical and useless Senate (as opposed to the USA) that cost us low 9 digit yearly - as a mere way to have friends of the ruling party get paid 6 digits annually - and brainlessly pass every bill sent to them, just to preserve the old English 2 chambers, is extremely... 😡😡😡

My friends from Alaska go every year for a couple weeks to a small MTT series (1k Main Event) and always invite me to tag along (stating that it is extremely soft/easy money) ; it is definitely at the top of my poker MTT/vacation list and will probably go within 2-3 years

I'm just very happy with keeping the grind up for this long at this volume. I've found the right ratio of poker to slots, and reporting by week has kept me from slacking off hours—reporting an 8 or 12 hour week without extenuating circumstances would mess up my average hours per week, which is in the 30s.

It was Morphismus who taught me how to cherry pick segments from videos for 2+2 embeds, and for that I'm forever grateful. If you don't know how it's done, quote his post and take a look.

When you draw to trips or better on Ultimate X, the machine chirps a noise that sounds like the word 'bink'. That's the sort of onomatopoeia that I really appreciate.

That's a good one. Some of the multiple hand units will pause on a specific hand for 100 ms or so before revealing that it's a big winner. The mind picks up on the pause but doesn't have time to start celebrating until after the hand is revealed.

Last night I had a great run on the Hexbreak3r slot, but as the play was ending, the middle column shot up to where it was 6 symbols high. When you hit a horseshoe symbol in a column in Hexbreak3r, that column grows taller by 1 symbol. When it reaches 8 symbols tall, you win the prize listed on top of the column.

It's a slot machine...for goths.

The prize for the middle column is always the progressive payout listed on the top of the screen, which for the $2.40/spin denomination was around $459 at the time. I had already won close to $400 on the machine, and the middle column is legendary for its glacial growth. Building it up 2 more symbols can sometimes take several hours of carpal tunnel-inducing spin button mashing. Plus it's a high variance play.

It was time to play poker in any case, so I beckoned the capo of the Asian Slot Syndicate to me, and I gave him the play. It felt good to be a nice guy on the slot floor for a change, rather than my usual cutthroat self.

When I emerged from the poker room 4 hours later, the Syndicate players were at the machine, still working on the same play.

In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie's dad's job—prior to his being let go—was to screw caps onto toothpaste tubes all day every day. That's sort of how I consider fast spinning at the same slot machine for 4 or more hours.

Thanks TopGun in VA! Some of Roald Dahl's kid's stuff is pretty subversive. I remember reading about Charlie's dad and wondering why the hell I should bother working for a living when I grew up, the answer being that I'd probably pick up some family members along the way who would want to eat.

On a deeper level, giving him that job then taking it away speaks to the drudgery of the working class vs the perils of automation, and how it's always a lose/lose setup for the working folks. And don't get me started on the Oompa Loompas.

Let me hit the Big Score and see where that takes me, then we'll talk about a book.

My slot sun run continues; poker not so much. I brought my C game to the table, and simply admonishing myself to play better didn't seem to work.

I value owned myself thin on the river a couple of times, which I was happy about. You have to do that a fair amount (but still <50%), or you're not value betting often enough on the river, and that's the big money street.

I made a couple of dumb calls, and I wasn't happy about that.
