So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

I finally got to experience the Canadian healthcare system. Found out I did still have a doctor after he retired plus+. called him for an emergency had to wait 2 months. Could go to the walkin clinic specific to him only (was only open 2 or 3 days a week had to wait 2 days) . Was told to go 2 hours before it opens which I did. Still only like 6th in line. Waited in a hallway for 3 hours without chairs (my foot was swollen so I stood on 1 foot) Not a super long wait for a 5 minute doctor visit (i already knew what was wrong with 80-90% accuracy I have google but i still had to do this for medicine) Don't see why I had to suffer through the second biggest pain of my life and couldn't go to a random walkin but I don't make the rules

Told to get a blood test and x ray for my foot this was friday have to wait for monday. Go to blood test 8am have to wait in a hallway on one foot again for 4 hours (only 6 chairs inside but If i sat down my spot would get jacked) apparently people who scheduled it could skip the line but the guy with the medical emergency had to wait on one foot in a hallway for 4 hours. Blood test takes like 2 mins. They probably scheduled it weeks in advance so for every 10 scheduled one unscheduled was allowed to enter. Doctor never told me to schedule it idk skill issue I guess most people who showed up without an appointment just left. Then I skipped the x ray because I'm not ******ed an a.i could tell me its gout.

The alternative was a 13+ hour wait in emerge. Actual believer of privatized healthcare now.

Free healthcare is nice for brokies but the waits are pretty wild and I took quick routes. I wouldn't mind a 2 tiered system where if you pay you get better service. It would take stress off the system. Just the time wasted waiting in line is worth so much money. My entire time getting actual care could have been an email. 5-10 minutes of a doctors time and a blood test is definitely less expensive then my hourly over 12+ hours

Something just isn't adding up and I'm not informed enough to figure out what this is. I constantly read articles about how hard it is to get into trades even though there is a labour shortage, combine that with anecdotal evidence(accept it or not) of people completing formal education but can't find apprenticeship and the math just isn't mathing. You say you hired 60 in 3 year

I think there's three things going on that aren't being talked about enough:
1. The programs themselves have cohort capacities that are much too low to meet demand.
2. There are some people who go through these programs that cannot land/keep work because of a variety of issues. Attendance, criminal records, work quality, etc.
3. Entry into a LOT of these programs isn't much higher than high school and a pulse. The bar should be higher to make sure you graduate a higher percentage of students with a higher probability of actually staying in the trade. This could help with issue #1.

I've been fortunate in that I've had connections to a number of trade schools through my network that have allowed me to hire apprentices right out of school, which is very budget friendly, is sometimes government subsidized, and you can find out very quickly who's gonna make it, and who took the program for other reasons.

Have you considered you know? training your own people? Since there's a shortage

I have to do regular bloodwork, so ya you gotta schedule your blood test good luck going without an appointment. I'm sorry you had to wait a lot, that is sadly par for the course, particularly for things low on the triage list. Father in law getting a new knee on friday as it happens, so he had to do about the same thing as you a bunch of pre-op tests, bloodwork, xray etc I thought he was going to be hooped and there all day but in an out in 90 minutes because it was all scheduled, I was amazed.

well there was no triaging that I saw for anyone I think thats an emerge only thing. If there was I would have been moved to fronts of the lines everyone looked fine. I stood on one food and everyone could see my swelling red foot because I had no shoe on. a lot of people skipping lines were just smart enough to know the system and were cutting off old people. The emerge in my city is notoriously long so I just toughed it out for two days probably the worst long term pain of my life

You didn't answer myquestion, but sure I'll take a stab at yours. This is a bit tricky, because much of your list are more about gradients not binaries, and a lot of stuff we already do. We already screen for English, we already target specific specific skill sets and demographics like working age people (unless you mean racial profiling?), family sponsorships are already fairl

My first paragraph is the answer to your question. I obviously understand that if we can't fill the void we'd have to get immigrants to do so. Never had an issue with this.

Yes, when you get over the idea that I just hate Indians because they're Indians you'll realize what I want is to go back to the days where our immigration levels were sustainable and weren't actively destroying the country. It's never been the individuals all though I certainly have an issue with 80% of recent immigrants being from India, we couldn't cap this at 5% and get some more South Americans?

and honestly feels like it doesn't match up to your prior rhetoric.

Because your idea of my prior rhetoric is ''deport millions'' which I said and stand by but was always referring to the millions of expired(or about to) visa holders. Yes I'd absolutely get rid of a lot of people in places we simply do not need them, hospitality being the first place needing a complete clean up.

Fair enough, like I said, I know pretty much nothing about this other than talking to neighbors who have kids who want to get into trades but can't yet I'm paying a plumber $180 just to come over to the house because he's so booked up.

by uke_master

We didn't open up the boarders (sic), maybe try again with a new question?

Our population grew like 35% in 5 years while women under 30 didn't have kids. What else would you call it.

by Shifty86

Our population grew like 35% in 5 years while women under 30 didn't have kids. What else would you call it.

A quick google suggests it grew 9% in the last 5 years. Recently the population DECLINED. And of course if one looks at the policies it is nothing remotely like open borders even if the liberals brought in a lot of temporary workers following the 2021/2022 labour supply crunch.

Maybe try again with your question?

I certainly have an issue with 80% of recent immigrants being from India

Drink! But also, totally false. It was 26% on PRs in 2025 that were from India. That's even worse than your estimate of nurses wages. Perhaps pause and do some reflection on why your ungoogled vibes got this so wrong.

Your prior post gave a somewhat long list of policy proposals. I researched each one. What I found was that Canada for the most part DOES that long list of policy proposals. You could debate tightening a rule, making it more restrictive etc. You then just didn't respond to this point.

It is now sounding like what you want it pretty close to the Carney liberals. You apparently want LOTS of immigrants to provide labour. You want them to do the policies Carney is already doing. Is all your position reduced to just slightly tweaking those policies to be slightly more strict like the silly banning part-time labour for international students? I'm sorry, none of this seems to match your prior hyperbolic rhetoric calling things treason etc.

Don't get me wrong, it sucks about the pain I'm sorry about that not trying to be at all dismissive. That sucks. It was undoubtably extremely frustrating. But this isn't how triaging worked - i.e. it isn't for people who got up in the morning for an unscheduled walk in blood test. If you had some high risk, imminent issue (yes likely identified in ER) then you can get the blood tests quickly if needed. Or most people schedule them, like as I said my father in law got blood test, echo, x-ray, and consult all in 90 minutes the other day because it was scheduled.

Might be because I lived in Mumbai Ontario for a few years. Regardless, 26% is far too high. Cap it at 5%.

Sure, we can agree that what I want is to make things more restrictive. This isn't hard, when Indian officials tell Canada they are letting in KNOWN criminals, we're doing something wrong. When the cashier who got here 2 weeks ago, doesn't speak a lick of English, I can safely conclude we're still doing something wrong.

We can put this to bed forever. We once had an immigration model that the world praised Canada for and seemed to work for everyone, immigrants and Canadian born individuals alike. We don't anymore. Can we go back to that?

Not good enough for me yet but yes I have given them credit for the changes made. A step in the right direction.
No my position hasn't changed. Canada first. 0 international students should be working off-campus when 15% of our youth are unable to find entry level jobs.

You apparently want LOTS of immigrants to provide labour.

I don't. I want Canada to focus on Canada. We have 1.6m people without a job, looking for one. I don't think we need anywhere near as many immigrants as people like you think and even the ones we need should be doctors and nurses. Nothing else. If Canada can't grow it's own engineers, well too ****ing bad. If Canada somehow can't provide workers for Tim Hortons then Tim Hortons should cease to exist.

Seasonal workers more than welcome. As long as they go back home once the season passes.

I'm sorry, none of this seems to match your prior hyperbolic rhetoric calling things treason etc.

I called Trudeau a traitor and he absolutely is.

One can have versions of all of these things and still have the massive immigration to maintain population which would drop substantially were it not for immigration.

I'm fine with the population substantially dropping btw. It's about time the government tried to solve the declining birthrate a different way. If Bulgaria can figure out ways to increase birthrate, I'm sure we could too.

Really huh? You can't even admit the healthcare system sucks?

How long did your father in law have to wait for his scheduled tests? I had to schedule a dermatologist for my son for some skin problems. 9 month wait. Flew to Europe, paid less than 200 CAD out of pocket and was seen the same day + got prescription.

by uke_master

lol at the snowflake. I’m still confused why you shared your personal anecdote about how many white people you saw. Like just….why? It’s so ****ing weird.

Well Professor we are having a discussion about immigration and the health care system so I would assume many of those hospital workers that are not Caucasian are immigrants or first generation immigrants . Its more relevant than your father in laws testing which is carried out by a private company called Lifelabs

Your shocked the Professor thinks Trudeau was a great PM as well so . We all remember when Justin promised 7500 more family doctors which never happened

CDN's with cash go to other countries for healthcare especially items like knee and hip replacements as here it will be years before they get in . Heck in BC the waiting time for a family doctor is around 5-6 years

Might be because I lived in Mumbai Ontario for a few years. Regardless, 26% is far too high. Cap it at 5%.

DRINK DRINK DRINK!!!!!

Why do you desire so badly to cap Indian immigration at 5%? Like that India tops the list isn't a huge surprise, they are a massive country, a common wealth country, with a focus on English so they can pass our English language tests and lot of technical skills. For instance most of the Indian international students I teach have stronger math skills than domestic students. Etc etc. So it is natural that they are a disproportionate amount. THis isn't a bad thing! Except for "Mumbai" Ontario what actual reason based on actual economic data do you have to desire to block Indians from coming to Canada?

When the cashier who got here 2 weeks ago, doesn't speak a lick of English, I can safely conclude we're still doing something wrong.

I guess someone would be their absolute worst at English 2 years in - but in almost all cases they would have passed the English language test. I'm sorry the Tim Horton's cashier messed up your order or whatever you are mad about. That doesn't mean we should try to block Indians!

We can put this to bed forever. We once had an immigration model that the world praised Canada for and seemed to work for everyone, immigrants and Canadian born individuals alike. We don't anymore. Can we go back to that?

That's my point. We more or less HAVE gotten back to that. When you look at the list of policies you would want - the ones YOU stated you would want - those are policies we for the most part do. You can say that Trudeau relaxed quotas on TFW too much in the supply crunch to try and get extra labour supply as demanded in a bipartisan way. Sure. Fine. I give it to you. But now that we are back to deflation and stronger standards again, I'm not sure other than minor changes on the margins.

Canada first. 0 international students should be working off-campus when 15% of our youth are unable to find entry level jobs.

You do realize that international students make up a very small single digit percentage of the labour force right, and rather concentrated in a few areas? I wish it was as simple as you suggest. But persisting problems with youth unemployment - particularly in rural areas where there are not international students - can't easily be blamed on international students. We should WANT that the engineering student can do part time engineering work so that they learn robust skills and integrate into the Canadian economy and provide product work, you're just shooting the economy in the foot for no real gain. It's a similar story to TFW where they do so many jobs that few Canadian youth want to do.

If you said that to me in person I'd drop you in a heartbeat

Let me explain to you what is racism when you paint your whole body black and stuff a banana down your pants and dance around like a monkey .

Before you ask. I have an issue with little Italy and Chinatown as well. That's not what integration should look like and it's not what it looked like when I was growing up.

For instance most of the Indian international students I teach have stronger math skills than domestic students.

In all our arguments, this is the recurring theme and it's becoming increasingly more hilarious you don't see this. Sounds like another issue Canada should focus on domestically instead of trying to fix it by importing people.

I guess someone would be their absolute worst at English 2 years in - but in almost all cases they would have passed the English language test. I'm sorry the Tim Horton's cashier messed up your order or whatever you are mad about. That doesn't mean we should try to block Indians!

I think the numbers are still far too high as we're simply not keeping up with demand of our social infrastructures but I just told you I give Carney credit for that. What are we even debating now lol. It's not strict enough for me and the numbers we aim for are still far too high BUT it's absolutely a step in the right direction. As you say professor, 2 things can be true at once.

NOT if it takes away jobs from Canadians and not when that engineer isn't doing engineering work but works 24 hours a week at Tim Hortons. It's honestly weird to me you can't make this link and fail to understand the caveats I offer but I think this is easily explained by where you live.

You're clearly not from Ontario, we're not talking about the same Canada you and I. Where I'm from, the majority of workers in fast food and grocery stores are Indian, this clearly isn't what any of the immigration streams were created for, especially in areas like the GTA where a Tim Hortons should have ZERO issues finding Canadians.

Ya bud I also spent a decade in Toronto. I just do not care about the colour of the skin of a person who serves me at Tim Hortons. I really can't fathom why I should be even the tiniest bit bothered by it.

Well Professor I think Pablito doesn't or do I but I do think he is concerned if that employee is an immigrant that is being solely brought in to fill that position at a lower cost than hiring a young CDN with youth unemployment at almost 15% that we should not be doing that .

by Pablito

I really don't understand this comment. We have had chinatowns and little italys etc for decades and decades when growing up - this isn't new it's part of Canada's multiculturalism. They are awesome! If nothing else, I'd to go to both of those when I lived in Toronto to get good authentic cuisine.

You keep giving these terrible economic arguments and made up stats (80% of immigrants from india - lol!), but I think ultimately this sort of cultural or social argument seems really core to your worldview here. You keep returning to these like observations that lots of indian people are working in low skill low wage visible jobs like at Tim Hortons. That's the real problem.

Never said this. I said cap at 5%. If I wanted to block Indians, I would've said block Indians.

Contrast two approaches to reducing immigration. The first focuses on competencies like your prior and now abandoned list: i.e. focuses on people who are educated, experience in in-demand jobs, speak English, who pass minimum wealth levels, working age, etc. It's about finding people of the right economic fit. Contrast that with your approach which is an ethnicity approach. You just want less Indians. I think this is why we disconnect - I'm focused on building a strong economy for Canada and you're focused on having less Indians serving you at Tim Hortons.

Our own homegrown engineers and recent CS graduates can't find jobs. This isn't hard professor. Canadians first.

If only reality was as simple as the zero sum "if Indian gets job, Canadian loses job" that you present. Firstly, the numbers just aren't that big. You cited the 15% youth unemployment earlier, but international students are something like 1-2% of the Canadian labour force, and highly concentrated both geographically and in certain sectors, having almost no impact on a wide swath of that 15%. If you try to list say the top 10 reasons Canadian youth struggle to find jobs, there are a tonne of reasons beyond claimed competition with international students doing part time work. A similar story repeats for, say, BSc graduates where there are indeed a lot of challenges facing transition from BSc to workplace, but competition with international student BSc holders likely isn't in the top 10. Indeed, domestic students are like 80-85% of BSc graduates. A big chunk of those international graduates leave Canada after having dropped 100k+ in tuition dollars into the Canadian economy. For those who stay, Canadian employers higher domestic BSc holders at a higher rate (91%) than they do international student BSc holders. And for those that do stay and do get jobs, let's not forget they are now doing valuable, high-skill jobs that benefit our economy and that employers determined they were the best applicants for, there is economic value here. In a lot of these fields you get two things true at the same time, a mismatch where there are job vacancies and challenges finding qualified labour, while simultaneously having people on the margins struggling to get jobs. I think more emphasis should be put trying to support those transitions that trying to pin it on competition with international students.

I tire for the rest of your post, if you think I missed something important I can address it.

Agreed. We shouldn't be importing immigrants by the millions to fill these positions that were historically filled by the Canadian youth and elderly. That is a real problem indeed.

As for the rest. I laugh at the constant insinuation that I'm some closeted racist.

That's exactly what is happening and being addressed by MPs from all parties when they're debating immigration policies. This isn't a secret anymore. It's only the professor who continues to deny this.
