So what's new?

I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet

Are they? A quick google suggests 22% of Canadians were born abroad vs 18% for Norway, and generally Norway is on the high end of immigration at least by European standards.

It really is apples to oranges comparison in so many ways though, most of these comparisons are pretty meaningless imo.

just because they have immigration doesn't mean their not against it.... I bet they get a lot higher quality immigration because when you become Norwegian your half way to becoming a millionaire automatically

It's never been free and never will be

Like our free health care that sucks

I think there are zero people ITT who are remotely confused that "free" education and "free" healthcare doesn't cost the government money and is paid for by taxes etc. But it does beg the question, if zero people are confused by this, why do you all obsessively seem to feel the need to correct them?

Are you just going off vibes here? Like I googled one stat for you, which seemed to suggest a similar percentage of norwegians and foreign born as Canadian born. I'm not claiming to be an expert on Norwegian political sentiment about immigration. But it sure sounds like you are just making **** up to fit a narrative.

30%? No its more like 7 or 8% go to debt service. The argument in general for public expenditure on major capital private projects is something like this. Suppose a company believes that building X costs a billion dollars but will profit them 950 million. They won't do it. But if that work would also employ a lot of people, who then pay taxes, and build secondary business to su

I am thinking more of Alberta were 40% of property taxes goes to either a public or catholic system . If I was still there my $875,000 house property taxes this year would be close to $12,0000

And yes many folks are that clueless it reminds me of people that say hunting is cruel cant you just buy your meat at the grocery store

yes and well im 4 minutes into the new episode of about that and my vibes seem quite accurate....

Sometimes even you get things right. One of the far right parties in Norway received something like 25% of votes not that long ago and plenty of Norwegians admit voting on them because they're tired of political correctness and Islamic immigration. This is no different than most countries in Europe whose people also want far stricter immigration policies with the number 1 and 2 problem being too many Muslim immigrants.

Professor will deny what most Western countries have stopped denying years ago. People are getting more and more skeptical towards non-western immigration and rightfully so. For some reason the West has convinced itself we need to import millions of people from different parts of the world whose values are not equal to ours.

Canadian anti-immigrant sentiment is at an all-time high. This is no coincidence either.

. For some reason the West has convinced itself we need to import millions of people from different parts of the world whose values are not equal to ours.

This is what I thought. In our previous argument you kept trying to phrase the anti-immigrant arguments in terms of jobs, housing, economy, etc. As in, we shouldn't have international students in Canada because it would have bad economic effects. A lot of those argument were revealed to be totally vacuous and just you asserting vibes. But their "values are not equal to ours" is quite a different flavour of argument, and I suspect closer to the true source of your animus.

I'm pretty sure I have literally said before we're importing people whose culture doesn't mesh with ours. You say this yourself all the time ''two things can be true at once''. I have an issue with the numbers and the OBVIOUS affect it has on housing, jobs and our economy and the fact 80% is from the same province in the same country.

I'm genuinely unsure why you're acting so surprised when I have been very specific.

Stop inventing strawmen. Just as nobody* is confused that "free school" means the government is paying for it through taxation etc, nobody* is confused that meat at a grocery store comes from animals, just as nobody* is confused that biological males don't have children to throw in one more of your favourite bugaboos. Presumably those opposing hunting are instead arguing something like that it is less humane to let an animal slowly bleed out from a partially successful gunshot wound than a near instead death with a rod - I don't care whether that argument is right or not, the point is you are just imagining your opponents as these drooling idiots who don't understand basic facts. And when you pretend debate against these imagined idiotic debate opponents, the only points you are winning is also against them.

*the internet is vast and social media LOVES to spread the example of the one idiot. So maybe there is some idiot somewhere who actually is confused. But effectively zero adults are confused by any of these.

Googling nope 40% is too high. But like sure, Alberta funds education through a provincial/municipal blend unlike other provinces where it is exclusively provincial like BC. This doesn't really make a huge difference as far as I can tell. It is OBVIOUSLY a massive public good in a developed society to have our children educated, sorry we have to pay for that one way or the other.

Funny on the Norway thing not sure how we can compare to Norway

Doing a bit of research

  • Noway found oil in 1969
  • Built a 2 trillion wealth fund
  • Every dollar of oil revenue belonged to the people
  • Norway taxes oil profits at 78%
  • Owns 1.5% of every listed company in the world
  • Norway has 5.6 million people
  • Norway started there fund 14 years after Alberta started the Heritage Fund
  • Alberta's fund is worth 27 billion
  • Alberta produces 70% more oil than Norway
  • Norways fund generates more income now than the oil and gas production
  • Canada's GDP per capita is $22,000 than the USA
  • 460 billion in Investment left Canada between 2015 and 2022 Trudeau Years
  • Canada should be the richest country in the world
  • Norway Free University
  • Norway Free Healthcare and a system that works
  • Paid Parental leave and subsidized child care
  • Full Pension funded by oil wealth

Do you think we should tax oil profits at 78%?

by MoViN.tArGeT

Canada at one point did have a higher gdp per capita then america. hard to believe now

A quick google suggests that this was true in 1976 during oil price shocks and briefly in 2011-2022 when the US recovered slower from the global financial crisis than Canada did. Like sorry it is hard for Canada to compete again....the world's global economic superpower. Wish it was easier.

I am not sure that is viable to be honest but I am not the one comparing Carney's Idea of a Wealth Fund to Norway's.

Are you suggesting I am? My view is the comparison to Norway is ****ing stupid and not quite sure why you all keep talking about it.

ya it was a very short amount of time a couple of times im not making the argument we ever actually surpassed them. but we were at least close. We will never be that close again. We are not very far away. It is quite worrying

Worth noting that immigration lowers gdp per capita, because the cheap labour comes in making much less than regular Canadians. So you can have that number declining despite people not being worse off because the denominator is growing. I suspect now that we are in a period of tightened immigration and actual projected population decline we see that number increase (of course the numerator has problems due to the tariffs so maybe not).

The bigger point is “look at this high level metric the US is better!” is at best an incomplete argument.

Ottawa is for the first time to track which foreign students and other temporary foreign residents have left the country after their permits to remain in Canada expire, Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab told a committee of MPs on Monday.

Economists have been warning for years that Canada has been dramatically undercounting the number of temporary residents living here by presuming that international students and others leave the country after their permits and visas run out.

Ms. Diab said Monday the government is conducting a pilot program to track entries and exits by temporary residents, including international students, as part of an action plan to combat non-compliance.

From this month, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada will record if they are in the country or have left, IRCC deputy minister Ted Gallivan told MPs. He said the department has been collaborating with the Canada Border Services Agency on collecting entry and exit data.

The report found that IRCC did not effectively investigate international students identified as not complying with the terms of their study permits – for example, by not attending the college at which they were enrolled.

In 2023 and 2024, more than 153,000 cases of students thought to be breaching the terms of their study permits were flagged, but IRCC only had enough funding to investigate 4,000 of them.

Ms. Metlege Diab said cases that were identified in the report were being investigated.

She said 78 per cent of the 153,000 cases flagged by the audit were found by the department to be attending a college or university, or had applied to another migration stream. Twenty-two per cent were presumed to have left the country but may have stayed in Canada after their permits to remain had run out.

We're starting this NOW? You're telling me Canada admitted 2.5 million people in 2023 and 2024, mostly temporary residents, without a way to track whether they overstay their visas or not?

How does Diab still have a job? Country run into the ground by incompetent r3tards. Luigi them all.

They cared about the environment though.
