in a game type known for huge pots where nearly every hand goes to showdown, position is NOT the number one thing.

we'll have to just disagree

It’s not me you have to disagree with, it’s people who studied the game and made hundreds of thousands of dollars studying every spot.

Some of the regs like the bomb pots because it’s a way to get players to play a variant of poker they are clueless at. And I think some players do feel pressure to participate in them.

Is it scummy if you’re a reg and you try to get those people to play because you know they will make terrible mistakes that you could take advantage of? Maybe not, but I was curious.

No, I don't think that's scummy. Similar concept to encouraging straddles. Neither of these things are inherently bad for the game. To the contrary, I think they're generally good for the game. I think it would cross over in scummy territory if you knew someone did not know the rules and you talked them into playing and didn't bother to teach them. I also think it's scummy if you overtly pressure someone who is hesitant.

Think you guys might be talking past one another. Position would be the most important thing if we assume everyone is reasonably close in skill. As you start to create wider skill gaps, position gives way to basic skills like hand reading and how to navigate playing two boards. I mean, if you're up against people that have never played PLO, they might be going nuts with like top pair, and giving them the button every hand isn't going to save them.

Position is still SUPER important, even against amateurs.

At a table full of hard-core Omaha players, half of them will be all-in by the river. At the 1/3 Venetian tables I was at, exactly zero hands were like that. Action players end up at action tables, and vice versa. I'm in the vice versa group.

Even a few years ago Venetian games felt super nitty compared to previous trips. I hear they are even worse now. Last time I was there people were basically just playing for comps and a chance at the high hand. Aria and Wynn and to some extent bellagio had much more fun and loose games.

Arriving in vegas today so will give some thoughts later !

To some degree it depends on if there's a freeroll based on hours, like there was a couple weeks ago. I don't know of an hourly based freeroll right now.

Also, nittiness is only part of the reason people didn't play the bomb pots. Low intensity hold-em players don't like Omaha, or won't like it after they play it a few times, especially if it costs them a lot of money. Whale and Muck are anything but low intensity. If they're stuck at a table with players like me, they get a table change and leave for more excitement. So eventually my tables were left with mostly low intensity folk.
