Not if the company has a DRIP program. My utility stock company automatically reinvests dividends in fractional shares when dividends are paid.
Meanwhile rice has to watch his boomer stocks underperform the s&p500, or even worse, go down in value.
According to Google, to get that 4.1% return with dividend stocks (that pay quarterly usually) I'd have to invest twice as much cash as I do currently.
If rice needs cash, he'd need to sell the stocks, which gets taxed (if there's profit. If not, it's clown shoes). I get taxed on my 4.1% returns, but the remainder is cash. No tax on sitting cash

That's why it's better to have stocks or etf's. You can sell calls against the stock, although if you're talking about an IRA I don't think you can take the cash. Maybe with a Roth, I don't know.
