President Donald Trump

I assume it's still acceptable to have a Trump thread in a Politics forum?

So this is an obvious lie - basically aimed at

No, I am slightly simplifying them, because of my audience.

I thought about describing the logic using only grocery store items where some products are effected by a tariff while others aren't, but I thought this would fly over nearly everyone's' head.

I don't think you need to worry about talking over the head of your audience.

The average consumer paid exactly $0 more than he otherwise would if there were not tariffs for everything he buys for the year. It seems many of you can't grasp the idea that tariffs are NOT inflationary. You pay more for items effected by the tariffs so you have less money left to buy items not effected tariffs so those prices are forced down and the net effect is no addition

There are people ITT that support increases in income and/or corporate taxes, but hate tariffs and when they read this will be confused why I am comparing the 3 of these so I think you are wrong.

The "financial advisor" who doesn't understand how progressive tax brackets work is simplifying stuff for his audience. Gold.

Hey guys I just figured out how to solve inflation!

Everyone just STOP BUYING stuff you need for like three months. Maybe four. The lack of demand will cause prices to drop and then you can buy what you need for the next few months until we have to all do this again to keep the prices down.

Now, this only works if everyone agrees so we all gotta promise real hard to stick to it. But if we do, I think we’ll be ok!!

hand this man a nobel

I really think baba deserves a cabinet position.

nah he's overqualified

Tariffs and inflation are not as strongly correlated as some people in this forum imagine. On the other hand, the relationship between tariffs and prices is far more nuanced than bahbah's third-grade explanation.

I suppose one could argue that tariffs can actually be deflationary, as in the case of the Hawley Smoot leading to the great depression.

Do you think I’d be a good fit at the SF Fed?

Agree on both points. Again, we have some very simple people in here and I know I’ve upset them already by saying tariffs don’t lead to higher inflation because they have heard the media and dem politicians promise them that they do.

New republican slogan - "We stand for the hockey team!"

Ironically, Republicans don't even like hockey. We're more into pro wrestling, football and NASCAR.

What are the chances that this EmptyTheCities guy is TheBigEasy back on a new account?

I vote 'None of the Above' (i.e. 100%)

addendum: looks like my answer ain't gonna age well.

That isn't how self-bans work. You can't lift it yourself. I assume you could get a mod to lift a self ban before the term of the ban expired.

In any case, I was under the impression that King Spew perma'd Karl. But I guess it doesn't matter either way. It has been quite a long time since permabans were permabans.

And don't think I'm not grateful for that fact.

You might be the single stupidest idiot on this forum

Just because you’re a bank teller who says ‘hey have you thought about using this credit card cuz it gives you cash back?’ doesn’t make you a financial advisor

Exactly. When tariffs become deflationary, your economy is pretty rkd. That means that industries are starting to weaken, leading to less job growth, less GDP growth, and consumers spending less on goods. Q4 of last year already started showing signs of this.

Tariffs are one part of what can cause inflation, not the entire equation. But they do play a key role if they are implemented recklessly.

Rainingmen, did you read my last post (the one before you called me "the stupidest idiot on the forum") where I linked an article talking about how a san fran federal reserve study found that tariffs are not inflationary? Why don't you lay down and tell us how that made you feel?

I'm not sure you want to debate if repubs are dems policies are more pro economic growth. There is a reason why no dem has talked about economic growth on a campaign trail for a very long time.

That's not what the article said.

Did you think the reasoning in that article tracked the reasoning in your third grade explanation?

I think I requested a self-ban for 6 months approximately a year ago, but I could be misremembering.

Anyway, no, corpus vile, Israel is not the Great Satan. The US is, and Israel is its client state

Oh. Sorry guess I shoulda twigged that Karl. So anyway is your new moniker a homage to the Khmer Rouge or what?

by Victor

glad we agree that the USA supported the Khmer

I (very) rarely if ever agree with you vic, but in fairness to you, they were made out to be the good guys in this historically accurate war drama

omg i need to see that film

It's on youtube free. It also has a Soviet baddie who throws bothersome capitalists into a pit of crocodiles.

bahbahmickey is basically saying inflation isn't inflationary

Bold move, really

After all, what is logic and basic intelligence when you can cast both aside in favor of having your mind be a toilet for MAGA talking points

Then tax increases don't reduce purchasing power because you have less money left to buy items after taxes and those prices are forced down. 60+ years of right wing policy and economics debunked just because you're trying to defend nonsensical Trump policies.
