i think the difference in ev in equilibrium is astronomically low between call and fold, the issue is most of the people that dont understand its a mistake / why are signif underperforming equilibrium. if your plan is to cooler a random person w 85o to justify all the times u miss i think its a bad plan
A lot of hands are close to neutral EV in a vacuum, but a hand being slightly -EV is not the only reason to fold 85o. It's also about our overall range construction.
If you have too much offsuit junk in your range you will struggle to defend enough against aggression as the hand progresses. You will typically end up over folding turn and/or river, because the offsuit junk throws off your ratio of good hands to junk. You have to fold all those junk hands somewhere.
So my question is which of the junkier hands perform best in multiway spots? Is there a sort of heirarchy of junk?
I'm often torn about what to do if I'm sitting there on the button facing something like 3 limps, and I have A3o or something. I would open it on the button if it was folded to me, but it doesn't play particularly well multiway.
Against a field of limpers where I'm happily overlimping 86o on the Button, I also trivially fold A3o without a second thought. 86o has a much better chance of making a hand that can win big pot / doesn't have as much RIO issues on these hands / has a much more likely chance of flopping enough to continue multiway. TP (especially one with no kicker) in a very multiway limped pot is a fairly worthless hand that should often be dumped on the flop anyways to almost any action, imo. The robots will rank A3o > 86o (I'm guessing this is simply based on overall all-in equity rankings?), but I believe that is a mistaken way to rank the playability of hands in a very multiway limped pot.

We're worried about someone betting us off a better junk hand in a 7way limped pot?
And even if it does happen once in a blue moon, oh noes, we folded the best hand in a small trivial pot, next hand please.

Once in a blue moon? You're playing 85o. That's more like 28 times before the full moon.
If you want to donk around with junk, feel free, but don't fool yourself into thinking it's anything other than a losing play.
Since no one is going to be able to collect any data (let alone a meaningful sample size) on exactly what is profitable from what positions in what situations in LLSNL for them, all we can do is guesstimate as best as possible and then each draw our own lines in the sand (while fully admitting we could easily be mistaken), imo.

yeah i mean the issue is this is really the only mindset that limps 85o here (and why what should be essentially neutral becomes decently losing)
So I'm on a break from a tournament, and poker gods just punished me for talking shit about 85o. Mid position opens, button calls, I make the "disciplined" fold with 85o off of my 30 BB stack.
Flop A85
Money proceeds to be shoveled in by both other players with Ax. My 85o likely would have tripled up.
Lol! 😀

Well played. Say no to limping/calling trash.

Haha. Yeah I'm still 100% convinced it's the right play in the long run.
That being said right after I made that post last night, two hands back from break I picked up 85o again. I fold.

The poker gods are definitely having a good ol time at my expense.
