It’s far from wasteful navel-gazing; it’s one of the most powerful known mechanisms for bootstrapping deeper understanding and better outcomes.
In humans
Extended inner speech (sometimes called inner monologue or private speech turned inward) acts as a cognitive scaffold. It helps you:
• Hold and manipulate complex ideas in working memory longer than raw visualization or feeling ever could
• Catch your own contradictions, sloppy assumptions, or emotional biases in real time
• Simulate counterfactuals (“What if I did X instead?”😉 at low cost
• Rehearse, critique, and refine plans before acting
Research consistently links richer, more verbalized inner speech to advantages in problem-solving, self-regulation, planning, categorization, attention, and even creativity. It’s basically language turning into a superpower for thought — you get to use the same combinatorial system that lets humans invent calculus or write symphonies to debug your own reasoning.
People vary a lot: some have almost constant narrated inner speech, others think mostly in images/concepts with minimal words, and both can be very intelligent. But when high-IQ individuals do lean on verbal inner discourse, they often use it more strategically and for longer/more abstract chains than average. It’s not that inner speech = high IQ, but that the capacity for sustained, self-correcting internal discourse correlates strongly with fluid intelligence and executive function.
The people who skip most verbal inner speech aren’t necessarily dumber — they may just be faster at parallel non-verbal pattern-matching — but they can hit walls on certain kinds of meta-cognition and self-explanation that verbalizers navigate more easily.

Thinking hard or ardently about politics is wasteful.
