i'm waiting to finish it before i write a review

took it with me on recent trip but since i always fly fully blasted on gummies it was a slog to get through since it's so densely packs with incredibly interesting and insightful bits where my mind gets activated and starts thinking about what i'm reading to where i then have difficulty following

however, those are incredibly good struggles to have and i'm incredibly impressed by the fact that garick correctly forsees where his readers thoughts will be going and then deals with them accordingly by addressing those headon

just from reading the introduction alone, i now have a fundamentally different understanding of early american diplomacy

i'm very much looking forward to doing more reading of it in the near future - ideally with less thc coursing through my system

also after spending a weekend in henderson visiting family, gf now very much wants to permanently relocate there so real chance we move to vegas 😀

LOL. The introduction is by far the densest part. I can't imagine how hard it would be to slog through under the influence.

Take GF to Vegas area in summer before committing to a move, IMO. It will be shockingly hot and dry to a Seattle-ite. Best to see how she reacts to that before spending the time and money on a move.

Yeah, I just don't understand desert people. Nice to visit, I guess. Of course it's pretty common to want to move wherever you've just vacationed if it was pleasant. It'll pass.

Another data point: I've lived desert s/w for all of my adult life, and the only place I would consider moving to is either PDX or Seattle, and I doubt I will.

Or is that two?

San Diego area would be my choice and if forced to go east coast it would be Charleston area around South Carolina

If inland, guessing Lake Tahoe so still close to water and could enjoy the mountains but eventually the cold would kill me there

she briefly lived in arizona before - she knows what she's getting into

i can't deal with another 3 months straight of dark, overcast and damp

there's really only 3-4 tolerable months of weather up here and the rest is just aids

easily the worst climate i've ever lived in - and that includes ample time in north africa and the arabian peninsula

vegas is primarily because her closest relative lives in henderson

we're already planning on going back for a week in spring break to look at housing then

yes, i was on about 4x normal dosage and quite a few times recalled you suggesting to people to skip the intro but found it too fascinating to skip

i was pretty insufferable on the flight

Out of curiosity, how long did you live in the U.S., and how did the quality of life compare to where you are now? What ultimately led you to move in and out?

Also, you mentioned the Charleston / coastal South Carolina area — what specifically appeals to you about that region?

These were climate choices for the main.

I have lived in the US twice, both for short periods.

4 months immediately post graduating. I worked as a short order chef in Ocean City Maryland for 3 months and then travelled around for 5 weeks off the back of the incredible but now defunct Delta Pass - unlimited internal stand by flights on Delta for 30 days for $500. I think I flew to and saw Vegas, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego, New Orleans, Orlando, Boston, Philly and Daytona Beach before ending up in New York. Also spent a weekend in St Petersburg Beach at the beginning

Then I lived for 10ish weeks in Chicago in 99. The plan was full time - I moved there from London with my ad agency, but then I got an offer out of the blue from the Sydney office and snap accepted it and came here.

Do you think you’ll ever move out of the North East?

San Diego is awesome, but the cost of housing is insanely high.

I don’t think so unless we follow the kids when they are all grown up.

When I lived in phoenix a lot of the people I met were San Diego transplants due to cost.

The multiple is how many times larger is median house price to median household income. Couldn’t quite fit Hong Kong on there but it’s way out in front at 16.7

Sydney 2nd and San Diego 9th. Bah

seattle 7 and las vegas 6

but vegas has much lower income levels and we're going to be making the same

Yeah that comparison thing is interesting, but it lowballs San Jose in absolute terms, for example, as Silicon Valley wages are very high

yeah big reason for the constant layoffs in tech is if you can find a small team of 6 people that's no longer required, that can save you about 2 million dollars a year in salary and benefits

Hope you and the family are doing well — how’s poker been going since becoming a dad?

How has your tolerance for counterparty risk (casino withholding, getting paid, funds security, site risk) evolved over time, and has managing that uncertainty generally been worth it for you? Curious if having a family shifted that perspective at all.

When you’ve decided to bankroll or work with people in the past, what were some of the key things you looked for early on? Any mistakes you made along the way that you’d try to avoid if you were doing it again?
