I suspect that people take a poster's entire body of work into account when responding rather than viewing each post as an individual blade of grass with no connection to the larger field.

I sometimes forget that you are a poet. That was beautiful!

I obviously picked this example because of my own biases, but the general point is actually much more broad; that the line between history, mythology and outright fiction is extremely blurred for most cultures across space and time, including The West. Although some cultures are clearly much more amenable than others to honest inquiry.

That is true and important to be aware of when reading history. There is also a lot of people who tries to interject new mythology into existing history. This happened a lot during the romantic era for example, when medieval and ancient time was a big subject in art and often infused with a modern take on what it was like. To this day and age a lot of our misconception of history stems from the romantic era.

As far as this specific topic goes a lot of nations, countries and states when deciding when they were created tends to go as early as possible under the most charitable interpretations of historical sources. There is certain pride to being as old as possible for such entities. For example a European state might consider itself founded under the earliest civilization building under a monarch where lineage can be traced to our time.

However, this is often wrong because even when we ignore problems of historicity, those early civilizations were barely nations as they would be unlikely to call themselves by a common nationality. They were hardly countries because borders were fluid at best, if they were known at all. Lastly, they were pretty much never a state in any kind of post-17th century understanding of the word and usage of sovereignty.

And because of their biases, Wikipedia will just state (most likely) fiction as "history", and then you have to closely scour supporting material to find all the disclaimers. And Wikipedia would never operate this way with Western history.

I'm not so sure about the bolded. In any case, if we are trying to evaluate the accuracy of "facts" as presented by past or present historians or bias in the work of those historians, I don't think we should be looking at Wikipedia articles.

Or often you could just read the first titled section of the page on Wikipedia itself, that has those exact disclaimers (as t_d already pointed out to you). For example the section on the page for the First Islamic State finishes with this quote, that couldn't be any more direct about the lack of direct evidence for most of the claims:

Historian John Burton states

In judging the content, the only resort of the scholar is to the yardstick of probability, and on this basis, it must be repeated, virtually nothing of use to the historian emerges from the sparse record of the early life of the founder of the latest of the great world religions ... so, however far back in the Muslim tradition one now attempts to reach, one simply cannot recover a scrap of information of real use in constructing the human history of Muhammad, beyond the bare fact that he once existed.[22]

This is a perfect example of the point I was making to rickroll about why people will always push back against Kelhus so much harder than other posters. There is a factual basis for a lot of the claims but they're mixed with ridiculous claims based purely in bias that are trivial to contradict.

Not to derail your guy's historiography exploration, but I have a question of the day.

‘Why is Tulsi Gabbard at an FBI raid on an election office in Fulton County?’
https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5712...

An official told NewsNation that Gabbard “has a pivotal role in election security and protecting the integrity of our elections against interference, including operations targeting voting systems, databases, and election infrastructure. She has and will continue to take action on President Trump’s directive to secure our elections and work with our interagency partners to do so.”

If you read the article it's towards the end

The biggest hoax in Trump’s political existence is his contention that the 2020 election was stolen.

His ego cannot allow him to admit that he lost, so he’s trying to give legitimacy to his bullshit lie about 2020 in an effort to distort the historical record. And lots of his derpy droolers are helping him.

He’s so incredibly damaged. Americans exercised inexcusably terrible judgment in electing him.

This was already all investigated. I'm assuming you know that.

Also, from the article.

“Either Director Gabbard believes there was a legitimate foreign intelligence nexus — in which case she is in clear violation of her obligation under the law to keep the intelligence committees ‘fully and currently informed’ of relevant national security concerns — or she is once again demonstrating her utter lack of fitness for the office that she holds by injecting the nonpartisan intelligence community she is supposed to be leading into a domestic political stunt designed to legitimize conspiracy theories that undermine our democracy,”

Follow up question for today. Why is Trump's team having secret meetings w/ a group that is plotting to break up Canada?

British Columbia Premier David Eby on Thursday sharply criticized the meetings between the Alberta Prosperity Project (APP) and the Trump administration as amounting to “treason,” responding to reporting by the Financial Times.
“To go to a foreign country and to ask for assistance in breaking up Canada, there’s an old-fashioned word for that. And that word is treason,” Eby told reporters in Ottawa, when told of the Times report.

So is the thought that left and right wing courts not only conspired against Trump in 2020 to declare that this case has no standing, but the clerks office with all the evidence of fraud just held onto that evidence for 6 years just in case they wanted to get caught by an investigation down the line?

I doubt many of his toadies believe it, which makes them all the more horrible. But we already knew that.

Don’t think there was a lot of “judgement” but plenty of emotion.

We don't just stop making sure our elections are secure just because a previous one may have already been investigated. Leave no stone unturned I say. In the interest of democracy, of course.

Hell yeah man, lets further undermine democracy and set the stage for ******s to welcome masked and armed men into voting areas with open arms

in the interest of democracy, of course

When it comes to election integrity, what possible harm could come from continuing to investigate a hole that you know is dry while simultaneously leading your supporters to believe that there must be something exciting in the hole? As you say, if we end up investigating the same bullshit allegations ten times and undermining public confidence in election integrity for no reason, oh well, that's just the price we have to pay to preserve our democracy.

I'm pretty sure he was being facetious.

The rest of the comment didn't lead me to pick up on that, but you are probably right

They are playing with fire letting her hold that gun like that. It's aimed right at his head.

It was a top post on reddit today. Should've checked. Let's just think of it as a classic rerun.

Pretty much.

God... remember the day when someone like Gore actually had a legit election integrity case, but dropped it for the good of democracy and the country.

Where did that country go?

That country got bombarded with lies and misinformation from every single direction inside and outside of the country so that all the people in power could extract every last cent they could

Tim Pool, Dave Rubin, Benny Johnson, Lauren Southern, Matt Christiansen, and Tayler Hansen... all paid by Russian state media to spout right-wing / MAGA talking points.
https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/...

That was always an underreported story, imho, because there are only two conclusions that can come out that.

1) MAGA messaging was knowingly or unknowingly shaped by Russian state influence operations.

or

2) MAGA independently adopted the same narratives and strategies that the Kremlin actively sought to promote.

Neither of those things are good... unless you want America to be more like Russia.

hmm, i wonder if rolling over and letting your opponent's brother steal the election maybe wasn't good for democracy or the country, and perhaps that's precisely how we got here? a question for the philosophers i suppose...

I think you are asking a lot for both this administration to do anything that is not ridiculous while at the same time having their supporters be remotely reasonable.

And yes, I was being facetious.

Are you really that insecure about your intelligence, that you have to attack me personally w/ every response?
