Jill's theme is one of the greatest pieces of music of all time imo, second only to Beethoven's 9th. I think I want this played at the end of my own funeral.

Sentimental Value was very good...it's a little confusing, because it's not structured like a normal movie, it's just about the relationships, so it may sem slight, at first. But it's not....and the 4 main leads are fantastic.

you need to watch the Ennio doc, DB....it is spectacular...and quite technical at times, when it comes to the music. I might not understand everything, but I love when they don't talk down to the audience.

I did have booked a concert with Ennio back in the day, booked for whole family. Cost a packet. And I told them not to be concerned if I wept during Jill's Theme 😀 But alas, he was ill and it got cancelled.

oh damn, that sucks. Last year, I had tickets to the B-52s and they canceled the day off because of illness.

Watched Dog Day Afternoon again....didn't mean to, but it popped up on a stream and I made the mistake of clicking on it, and once you do that, how can you not watch the whole thing?

It's one of the few perfect movies ever made. Maybe in my top ten of all time. Just spectacular in every way.

The other night, I watched a doc on Ennio Morricone, tonight I watched Jud Apatow's 2-part HBO doc, Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man.

I grew up worshiping Mel Brooks and his movies....this doc is beautiful and complete and funny and wise. It takes us from Mel's childhood all the way to his prep for Spaceballs 2, which is slated to be released next year - when he's a hundred!

Just a lovely movie...his relationships with Ann Bancroft and Carl Reiner made us tear up, and the behind the scenes of his movies and Broadway musicals are a lot of fun. There are a lot of comedians and actors and filmmakers showering praise on Brooks, as they should, from Adam Sandler to Dave Chapelle.

A+. Loved every moment.

Pillion - Harry Melling shines in the lead role and Skarsgard is unfairly hot as the dominant biker bro. The unlikely duo have top notch chemistry together and offer insight into a kinky dynamic that is likely new to most audiences. I laughed, I giggled, I blushed, I fell in love. Pillion is a special film.

I loved 'How To With John Wilson' so really looking forward to this.

Caveat, Damian McCarthy, 2020

This past weekend, we watched Irish/English horror film Caveat, written, directed, and edited by Damian McCarthy in his feature directorial debut. McCarthy also wrote and directed last year's great horror movie, Oddity, which I've reviewed in this thread.

This is a strange, claustrophobic, anxiety-inducing slow burn of a horror movie. It follows a drifter suffering from partial memory loss who accepts a job to look after a psychologically disturbed woman in a house on a secluded island.

McCarthy showed a masterful touch with Oddity, and while some might question the logical narrative of Caveat, you can see he knew what he was doing from the very first frame in his first movie.

This is all about weeping, stained walls, dark, flickering lights, pitch-black passageways, broken and overflowing sinks and bathrooms...and a leather harness attached to a thick chain that is anchored right in the middle of the creepy basement.

Also, the creepiest-looking tin drum rabbit toy I have ever seen.

Like with Oddity, there is something about McCarthy's work that just chills me to the bone. Every scene made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. There are only 4 people in the whole movie, and (spoiler) one of them is dead lol.

Caveat plays with memory and a possibly unreliable narrator in a way that has you grasping for meaning that is just out of reach...we're never quite sure who is the "bad guy" - the drifter, the damaged woman, or her uncle - the man who hires the drifter to take care of her.

The ending is ambiguous, but not for the sake of that ambiguousness. You can put together the narrative quite well - but there are two or three possible answers.

Oh, and don't forget about the nasty surprise buried behind the basement drywall...

Dripping with atmospheric dread, Caveat is a helluva scary movie. McCarthy is a major talent.

Melanie and Paris Hilton both release films this month. I'm all a tingle.

Will dig out Caveat

If I Had Legs I'd Kick You - Left a profound impression on me. As a cis male there are many things I will never understand when it comes to the things that women go through. There were TERRIFYING moments through the film and I asked my wife about those moments and she told me, “It be like that sometimes.” Meanwhile the most horrifying thing I go through is moments like realizing I didn’t take out chicken from the freezer for dinner, or an inconvenience like running out of butter.

I love any art piece that offers me a glimpse into a world I do not understand. It’s likely that many themes went over my head but I have an expert by my side who can answer any questions, and as a result will give me a better understanding of her day to day life.

WOMEN. ARE. SUPERHEROES.

Love Rose Byrne, and I'm sure I'll watch it sometime in the future...but right now, I don't watch movies to show me the horros of actual, real life lol.

A few friends on Letterboxd mentioned how much of it felt so real and raw. Certainly not a relaxing watch and best to avoid it until you're in a good spot to watch it. I was a tiny bit tired but the energy of this one jolted me awake! Byrne is outstanding, have always been a big fan. She's got a ton of range.

I had a similar reaction to Die My Love and decided against watching either of them once I caught on to what I was in for. I will eventually, I think, but it’s just too much to deal with right now.

yeah, I'm just not into domestic drama right now. Depression, divorce, etc. It's too real lol. It's why I've never seen Marriage Story. As good as I'm sure it is, why do I want to see the disintergration of a marriage??

If I Had Legs I’d Kick You does a really good job of not having it be overbearing though, with a ton of comedic elements. I still haven’t seen a bunch of the Oscar-nominated movies, but this, Rental Family, and Sentimental Value are my favorites so far.

Byrne gave an alltime voice performance in I Am Mother, and Luke Hawker did a fine Andy Serkis.

I’m sure Legs is great but is it as good as Ordinary People? I’m trying to think of the last “horrors of day to day life” film I’ve watched, Fat Girl, Welcome To The Dollhouse? I’ve never gone near Precious or 12 Years A Slave.

Legs might be Billy Gibbons’ most underrated guitar solo.

My first pass at my top 10 of 2025. Notable films I haven't seen yet: Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Bugonia, Sentimental Value, Sorry Baby, No Other Choice, It Was Just An Accident, The Secret Agent. Going to watch what I can from now til next week and maybe finish the list.
