I am a recreational player. I've been going to the WSOP for years to play a couple of events. I already have a room reservation at Horseshoe to play again this summer. I am old. I'll be 75 next month. I played a local tournament yesterday. I played so extremely poorly that I was left shaken. My short term memory is already very bad. I took yesterday's result as a sign that I ma
eddie, i'm sorry to hear that, i can't imagine what it must feel like
but i think it's important to recognize this stuff, because most people don't notice it at all and are oblivious, so if you see it that's actually a very good sign that you're still operational just aware of the lower level
i would not play competitively for amounts that are going to financially impact you - i would instead take that money you would have spent on the buyin and instead just spent it on having some nice things on your vegas trip like some fine dining or going to some shows or something else that's fun to do
but first and foremost, there's no shame in what is happening to you, it happens to all of us eventually and i only wish my own parents were as accepting of it as you are
just go to vegas and have fun without entering tournies is my suggestion, father time is undefeated, just enjoy your retirement - i'm sure you could persevere and keep going and find some success, but remember most hall of famers retire when they were still good enough to keep on playing in the league a few extra years as well because it's far better to exit on your own terms than to be pushed out the door
Rickroll -- thanks for your kind reply. There's nothing like poker to reveal the true state of one's cognitive functioning. It is possible to run so good that one's flaws aren't revealed. It wouldn't be a financial hardship to play the Monster Stack one more time. I am following someone's suggestion to try a Lions Mane mushroom supplement for cognitive health. If anyone has other suggestions along this line chime in. It wouldn't be a tragedy to finally let go of big buy in poker. We'll see how I play in the interim.
Since tournaments often require very long hours of play, maybe you would do better focusing on cash games where you can limit your session lengths to stretches where you can stay focused.
As for cognitive enhancement, I'd suggest caffeine. Some people say creatine helps.

Yes, independent of your suggestion that I am only just now seeing, I ordered some creatine a couple of days ago.
Dr. D - Have you ever run into a patient of yours at the cardroom? If so, how did you handle it?
why does being a poker player / pro gambler make the average woman dry up? (especially if your income is average or nothing special)?
cause if you're not able to prove the validity of choice by being a big baller then they think you're a fraud and/or about to lose it all
How much of a link have you personally seen between Abilify and compulsive gambling? Any interesting stories?
This may seem like I'm trolling here, but I'm saying this with the utmost seriousness. I struggled with anger, depression, you name it, and I had to do some serious digging to figure out what I was really missing. I was single for a LONG time and wasn't getting any tail, just watching porn and whatnot. Anyway, long story short, I started dabbling in the online dating scene, well, more like escorts and such. Pretty much, after I started dropping loads, I noticed I wasn't as irritable, like significantly better. I don't know the science behind it, but regularly busting nuts, and not by way of jerking off, really helps balance things out emotionally. If you don't have an issue with talking to girls, try tinder, ig, snap, etc. But if not, just go the paid route, like rubmaps, eroticmonkey, etc.

do you happen to know anything about EMDR?
what about EDM?
If a friend goes to a "free clinic" to see a couples counselor and the counselor convinces their wife that they have a mental condition that they have never been diagnosed with by a MD (which they have seen regularly for years), and that causes their wife to lock them out of the house and not let them see their three young kids, what type of legal recourse do they have after they find out the doctor is not licensed to practice medicine in the state that they are in.
Asking for a friend, they play poker and are going through a difficult time with their marriage.
They are seeking legal and medical advice from the appropriate channels, but just thought I'd give them another professionals take on the matter.

Everyone has a bad day playing poker. Just make sure you get a good nights sleep. Eat a good meal and maybe chew some gum so you don't get to sluggish at the tables. Also do some stretching and walking around a little bit throughout the tournament so you don't get sleepy. Doyle did it so no reason why you can't. If you enjoy playing don't quit. Just do the best you can. One bad day doesn't mean you can't play poker anymore. I have had several bad days playing. It happens to everyone including the best players.
I've noticed with aging that your hand changes on you. LOL. I mean you look back and it isn't exactly what you thought, same with the flop. It happens much more with aging. The steel trap mind you had for the details is gone. That still doesn't mean you can't play. It does mean you need to be more careful and double check things.
I mean now you know what your hand/flop combination is 99% of the time instead of 99.99%. That doesn't mean you can't play.
why does your advice mean less if someone doesn't pay you for it?
asking for a friend...
If a person has professional training, as well as the experience of giving advice as a full time job over many years, then their advice might indeed be more valuable than a friend's advice. Though it does matter that the adviser has specific expertise on the subject.
