Post a rule change that you think would improve a sport

every now and then I see a sport with a rule (or absence of a rule) that I think is a detriment to the sport. bad rules

In college basketball and NBA, whenever there is a double-technical, both teams get to shoot appropriate "technical foul" related free throws. No possession change.

When the NFL regular season ends, each playoff team - in reverse order of record - (worst to best) drafts ONE player from a non-playoff team to joing their playoff run. After that team is eliminated or wins it all, drafted player reverts back to their original team and contract - or free agency if their contract is up. The players gets an equal playoff share of the team that dr

Round about way of admitting Buffalo's wide receivers suck.

Free agents would likely want to show their best, so those would be the guys to draft.Contracts would probably lose some value tho as teams would have less incentive signing top guys if they can play 4 extra games and risk injury. Or demand a new deal if they play well. One reason why Pro Bowl no longer exists.I think there would need to be some form of compensation from playoff

ok: teams that have a player drafted for the playoffs get a 3rd round comp pick. How's that?

still no. 4 is total offense this year. :p

Might work

A defensive penalty on a 2 point conversion places the ball one inch from the goal line, not 1 yard.

What happens when Joe Burrow or Ja'Marr Chase gets drafted and then suffers a catastrophic injury? Just suck it, Bengals, I guess?

yeah i think we'd have to limit it to free agents only

also, i think some there'll be the inevitable "that's not fair" complaints when a team that just needed a specific piece suddenly has a top 3 at that position for the playoffs

but it'd make for nonstop talking points etc - which could be good for the league

as you'll see in the nba, most commentary isn't about analytics, it's about the drama

lol yeah, that might be the bug in my plan

I thought it was a good plan.

Dom just wants a WR

Dom wishes Josh Allen could throw to himself.

Allen is no Mariota in that regard

(6:50) Josh Allen pass complete short left to Amari Cooper for -2 yards, lateral to Josh Allen for 9 yards, touchdown.

In basketball, hard fouls and technical fouls on the coach result in Non offending team shooting free throws until they miss.

Worst idea of all time. It's entirely possible that a guy like Curry could make 30+ free throws in a row.

YES! You GOT it! provides great disincentive!

I think it's a wonderful idea.

Wait... scratch that. Forgot about Draymond playing for the Warriors.

live by the sword of endless free throws
die by the sword of endless free throws

Can we just have a rule that the USA aren’t allowed to host the World Cup until they understand that it’s not F1 and you can’t charge whatever you like for tickets?

Baseball

It would not really improve anything, but it would stop a silly ritual.

Rule: If a fight breaks out on the field the players in each bullpen must remain in the bullpen. Any player who leaves will be ejected from the game (leaving your team with no relief pitchers).

Baseball fights are silly enough for the players, coaches and umps to handle without adding 20 more pushing and shoving guys to the mix.

Plus, this would save all the bullpen pitchers from (1) potentially getting injured in a scuffle, or (2) pulling a muscle on the run/jog from the bullpen to the field....lol, and (3) having to pretend they are going to help win a fight or diffuse the situation.

Lock the gates!

NBA basketball.

Each team is limited to one timeout in the last four minutes of the game. During the last four minutes, if there is a non-shooting foul and the team is in the bonus, the team that was fouled has the option of either taking the free throws (with any player on the floor being allowed to shoot the free throws) or taking the ball on a side out with 14 seconds left on the shot clock.

Both rules obviously are designed to improve flow at the end of games.

In theory I like the idea of just letting the leading team take a side out instead of FTs, but I think the issue with that is that it just leads to a sort of freeroll situation where the defense just keeps max pressuring the inbound and aggressively going for the steal, knowing that if a reach-in is called then they just go back and do it again. So then one of two things happen:

--The D eventually gets lucky and gets the steal, and if this happens a few times in different games, you'll see teams just elect to take the FTs instead and nothing changes.

--You have a situation where there are like 12 inbound plays in a row where 2 or 3 tenths of a second come off on each one before a new foul is called, which would be the opposite of improving game flow. (I get that players would eventually all foul out but it could take a while.)

What might work better is allowing the fouled team to take a clock runoff in place of FTs. But this might lead to a situation where there's exactly zero drama after a team gets possession up by one with like :23 left or something, and the NBA doesn't want that either.

In the real world, teams aren't always able to take the foul immediately, so I don't think it would be quite as extreme as you are imagining. In any case, getting to pick the free throw shooter would also make the fouling strategy less effective.

Eliminate the first 46 minutes of the game and just play the last 2 minutes. This would speed up the game.
