Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
I just finished One Battle After Another. It's a great movie, (great as agitprop too) but I find its underlying ideas particularly odious. I view it as a kind of Birth of a Nation for lefties.
Meh. I thought all of the characters were way too cartoonish (and loathesome) especially Penn. Great is not an adjective I would use as it was kind of a chore to get through.
I work in a bar where the owner’s son & his friends do open mic standup on Tuesdays— used to be Fridays too. In the past 3.5 years I have been subjected to more open mic standup than anyone in the world who is not involved willingly in the scene.
I saw the trailer for Is This Thing On tonight. It bumped One Battle down to second on the list of movies you’d have to pay me $10K cash to sit through.

I liked how Penn's character was used. The end of the film makes clear who's really in control: the rich guys in the club.

Need to catch a bunch of these. Did you get to watch one battle in a theater?
Thanks Dom
I did. For some movies it's a requirement.
Going to the local theater to see one of my favorite movies, Touch of Evil, in a couple weeks. After seeing the way Touch of Evil was butchered by the studio, Welles wrote a memo to the studio. The "memo" was 75 pages.

Marty Supreme.Edit: I guess the shoe store was a nod to Tarantino, the dog & necklace to Snatch, pawn shop to Trading Places, maternity ward to Once Upon a Time in America. How did we feel about the soundtrackBut the ping pong scenes were totally believable if not quite on Color of Money level. How did Rounders mess that up so badly I saw an old review that called a bad movie wi
I thought the table tennis scenes were shot pretty undramatically (in contrast, while the movie "Wimbledon" was nothing amazing, the tennis was shot very well). Table tennis also suffers from the fact that you can't have a dramatic "whoever wins this point wins and whoever loses it loses" due to the win by 2 rule of the game. I actually wasn't sure if someone who hadn't played table tennis that much would have understood the context of each point until they saw the result.
It seemed to me a couple times the scoreboard was off between points, or they turned over points for the wrong guy? Endo & Marty did switch sides the last two games though.
Marty was the ultimate if it wasn’t fir luck/cheating I’d win every time guy.

Ok good, figured but wanted to make sure. Watched it 2x in the theater and then again at home and it was a completely different experience
Saw this being highly recommended and thought some of you movie nerds might like it.
I've just been watching the free stuff so far, and it's really good. Lots of cool interviews - Daniel Day-Lewis, PTA and Leo, Richard Linklater

I played a lot of table tennis years ago. My friend and I beat the college doubles champions. I was okay, but my friend was really good. No one I've ever seen played the way he did. He twisted his wrist around, so he was able to basically hit forehand shots all the time. Never had to hit a backhand shot.
You would have to see it to believe it.

Ironically, what you're talking about is a talking point in the movie - the penholder grip which means you only ever hit forehands.
Rant: I ****ing hate awards season. My twitter timeline is littered with people hurling insults at Sinners and OBAA, as well as actors of course. You can love your favorite movie or favorite performance without insulting another movie.
I like award season, it draws my attention to films that I would have otherwise not seen -- partly because I hardly watch film during the summer. I enjoy our habit now of ensuring we watch all BP nominees at the very minimum, along with a lot of others.
Discourse may be a bit polarizing but doesn't feel like there is much wiggle room for a lot of the major awards.
I tried to do the 24 hour best picture nominee marathon they used to do at theaters in NYC years ago. Gf and I brought blankets, snacks, thought I would have NO problem watching them all
Boy was I wrong! Was way harder than I thought and ended up taking numerous naps
hot rod was awful - first movie i ever tapped out on - sadly i missed this
people use twitter?
Yeah each day I get closer to removing Twitter from my phone. It’s all garbage now. Plus I get zero engagement on there, so I’m just some guy shouting into the void.
Yawns, I used to go to a 24 hour movie marathon every couple of years. It was one of my favorite events. I usually had to take a nap at around the 3-4am mark.
Twitter is a cesspool
I opened an account 10-15 years ago, closed it down and deleted it the same day.
I got on it in 2007. Still engaging with a few of the same people today. It is terrible now, I don’t think what I did would be remotely possible today.
I’m easily in the top 5% if not 2% of regular users who’ve had an overall positive experience with it.
I've had a positive experience with Twitter. I've been on since 2009. I created lists of friends and interesting people, and these lists are all that I read. I never scroll the main feed.
I'm so cool I've never even heard of Twitter. I win.
Twitter was clearly a tool to broadcast and not for discussion from the brief look I had at it, so supremely useless for actual dialogue.
X is an incredible tool if you follow the right people or sources. No better place to get up to date information
