One of my favorite bits of advice from TJ was
"If you limp with Aces you don't go busted with Aces".
That makes sense in a way. If you limp you either a limped pot or a 3! pot, or take if preflop with a 3!. If you play a raised pot like 3 ways with SPR of like 15, you can get busted a lot if someone has more than one pair.
The discussion of limping aces doesn't indicate if you are balanced and limp/3!ing bluffs. He never discusses stack depth in a tournament book.
The idea of Chan being a cash game fish is ludicrous.
TJ’s problem wasn’t winning tournaments—and he’s won them in lots of games aside from NLHE—or getting entry fees paid, as he was backed by Lyle Berman for decades.
It was getting from the payout window to his car without encountering a craps table.
The gossip also was that his wife had a very good job like head secretary/executive administrative assistant to an energy company CEO.
I was sitting at the table when he got $100 from a disgusted Tom Franklin at the dinner break of a Bellagio tournament by saying, “Lyle doesn’t give me anything” or words to that effect.
I’ve never heard or read a word about him being a cash game fish either.
The most famous of these is the 2000 WSOP Main Event, where he got all-in heads up with AQ against Chris Ferguson’s A9, and a 9 on the river gave Ferguson the title.
Cloutier later said that during the next year in two subsequent $10,000 heads‑up tournaments, he again lost when only a 9 could help his opponent and the 9 arrived both times, leading to the “dead to a 9 three times” lore.
No wonder Cloutier has had serious heart problems in his life.
Earlier in the headsup TJ & Chris chopped two AI pots. TJ had the chip lead on the second one and the best hand pf both times.
Chris basically admitted in Positively Fifth Street that he called TJ’s 3bet snapshove knowing TJ had a better ace, but that he thought he had a better chance of winning that hand than folding and giving TJ over a 2-1 chip lead. He was also exhausted, probably from getting bulldozed by the deck the day before.
Between him and Mizrachi, there’s no water left in the Great Lakes to suck out.
EDIT: I also forgot that if the river on the final hand been a 2 or 4, it would’ve been a third chopped pot. Chris took the lead on the flop of the second chopped hand, but TJ got it back on the turn; 1/3 of the river cards were chops.
TJ was a distant 6th on the last day but the other four woke up with the shoves. God forfend that Andy Glazer’s play by play report be in somebody’s archives

Forgot all about that but now it’s all coming back. I played with Brian Saltus (RIP) several times, as I’ve mentioned more than a few times.
