Phat, Tokyo Godfathers is strange remake of John Ford's Three Godfathers, which does star John Wayne.

I often watch Three Godfathers at Christmas. Hell, I'm going to watch it tomorrow night.

I wouldn't call it a remake, but it was certainly inspired by ii.

A Christmas Tale by Arnaud Desplechin

It's the kind of movie that my friends lovingly refer to as a "John Cole" film, which means none of my friends would never think of watching it. But some of you might.

The tale is about a family that, at least in one case, reunites for Christmas. The film begins a few days before Christmas as family members begin collecting. The matriarch of the family, played by Catherine Deneuve, is dying of cancer, leukemia. She has two sons and a daughter (a fourth son, the oldest, died of leukemia at age six).

The film opens in a courtroom where the now oldest son is being sued. The daughter pays his debt on the condition he never sees her again (we don't know why). Six years later Henri, the brother, sends her a letter saying he's coming for Christmas.

All gather in the house, the children, grandchildren, the mother and father, spouses and Henri's girlfriend. Then we are treated to all sorts of stories.

Most of the stories are tinged with regret and sadness. But there's also humor. References to films, music, and literature about.

I loved this movie. Near the end of the film, the father reads to his daughter who is always filled with sadness words about having knowledge of others but not ourselves. The final lines of the film belong to the daughter who says we can go to sleep and become mended.

There's much more to the film but it would take that much more to address the various plot lines. Certainly, this is a "John Cole" movie.

I tried to watch F1. It felt like I was being served movie product to consume. Nothing rang true, not even close. Like was that Brad Pitt or AI-Pitt, no one knows. He didn't used to look like that.

F1 was fantastic on the big screen....could see it being less so on a TV

Tokyo Godfathers was pretty good, and quite surprisingly moving in a few places.

However, I still prefer 3 Godfathers.

Roofman

I honestly thought this was going to be more of a comedy, but maybe I misremembered the trailer and didn't know the actual true story. Still thought it was a decent watch and had some great performances from Tatum and Dunst.

I wanted to enjoy Roofman. Tatum and Dunst are terrific. But I thought it was a tonal mess. Starts out as a goofy, quirky comedy then turns into a weird melodrama, moral story about hiding the truth from loved ones. I was a Derek Cianfrance fanboy since the Blue Valentine trailer was released, even defended the heck out of The Place Beyond the Pines. But I was incredibly bored for long periods of time after the premise was introduced. Shame because the cast is terrific and they all seem invested.

First 1/3 of place behind beyond the pines is superb

And the whole movie isn’t even bad, just felt like they went in one too many directions with it

Megadoc

Mike Figgis' documentary looks at Coppola making Megalopolis. Like Coppola's One From the Heart (I might be in the minority but I love that movie), Megalopolis proved to be a critical and box office failure.

The documentary starts at the beginning with the 82 year-old Coppola warming up the actors with some exercises before starting filming and then moves into a day by day record of the filming. Naturally a few disasters crop up, culminating in the sfx team and the set designer and her whole team quitting.

One focal point, the relationship between Coppola and Shi LaBouef, is a pretty contentious one. The film's cast, including John Voight, Adam Driver, Dustin Hoffman, and Aubrey Plaza, comport themselves well. Aubrey Plaza is particularly charming. Coppola wants the actors to have fun, and some do, but LaBouef is a pain for the director, but he's also trying. It's a sort of father and son relationship.

Coppola had been wanting to make this film for forty years, and Figgis includes outtakes from an aborted attempt 20 years ago, showing Ryan Gosling playing a scene.

Megadoc is a nice film about the making of a film, which was a labor of love for Coppola, who spent 120 million of his own money to make it. Megalopolis grossed less than 15 million. Tragically, Coppola's wife of 60 years died before the Megalopolis premiere at Cannes.

See Megadoc if only for Aubrey Plaza.
