2025 World Series of Poker May 27th - July 16th
Fair enough, 1 hour. Id prefer 15 min breaks instead of 10 so I dont have to practically run to go have a smoke. But the extra 5 adds up to make dinner an hour
I mostly play the 2pm events, and it’s always puzzled me why there’s a dinner break on Day 2 but not on Day 1. It makes the Day 2 too long; they should just stick to the same structure as Day 1, which would give a little more time in between days without ending insanely late.
10 am is atrocious. Sure days should be shorter but the solution isn't to start at an absurdly early hour for Vegas.
I mean if the high rollers want that for their high roller events fine. But that's got nothing to do with the people wsop is trying to attract.
What kind of life are you living where 10 am is an "absurdly early hour" to start your day?
This is great, no more having to waste hours doing nothing waiting around for the tournament to start.
who gives a ****. that has nothing to do with wsop. most losing players at wsop are on vacation. Casinos are empty at 10 am and packed at midnight.
This 10 am crap is just even more of the poker nerds not wanting to cater to recs.
If they want a 9-5 get a 9-5. Otherwise realize who your customers are.
What kind of rec (someone with a normal life who likes to play poker) cant get up to start play at 10? Recs have normal life with jobs. They have families. If you are a normal working guy whos staying at a hotel in Vegas, starting play at 10 means you have already had a much longer morning than you are used to and starting 2 or 4 hours later is just a waste of time doing nothing. Normal people dont sleep until 11-12 in the morning.
If anything its the no life misregs who dont have a life that requires a normal sleep schedule who will have issue with this.
Edit: Tbf it seems like you dont play that much tournaments. Theres a massive difference between tourney recs and cash recs. Cash recs would take offense to early starting times, agreed. As they are often the population you describe who like to have fun, splash around, drink while playing etc, they were out the night before enjoying vegas. The majority of tourney recs are not like that.
Even recreational players who usually wake up at 6am for work don’t want or expect to keep that schedule when they are on vacation in Vegas. Las Vegas is on a different schedule than most of the rest of country; it’s not just poker cash games. You can look at any part of the casino operation and it will be busier at 1am than is at 9am.
That said, we have come a long way in making the schedules for tournaments more reasonable. They used to start at an undetermined time and end at an undetermined time (when I started playing tournaments, they used to start 30-60 minutes late -all- the time). And the WSOP is actually a lot more reasonable in trying to limit tournament days to no more than 12 hours than several other big casino series are.

exactly. people go to vegas to have fun, and get away from reality and responsibilities.
Who goes on vacation to a 24 hour city filled with debauchery to wake up early?
lol donkaments
i think they did. today day 3 and ft end at 2 am but back then they played till 5 am legit. someone can verify or say its bullshit
Absolutely. In the early 1970s, with so few players, they'd occasionally start after dinner and play until the wee hours of the morning or later (e.g., both the 1971 and 1974 Main Events started at 7 pm and 1976 had at least four events start at 8 or later).
As fields got larger, they made the start times earlier: 1 pm in 1980 and 1981 then 11 am in 1982. Noon was the default from 1985 to 1995. In 1996, staggered starts meant one tourney at noon and another at 2 on the same day, then noon and 5 in 2007, noon and 4 in 2014, and 11 am and 3 pm in 2016. Occasional three-event days in 2022 used start times ranging from 11 am to 3 pm, which has been an hour earlier (10 to 2) since 2023.
The craziest officially published "Schedule of Play" was the 1985 $5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha, which was the only event starting on May 17 but nevertheless planned blind levels to run from 4 pm to 3 am, after which "Limits will be raised every hour until the completion of the tournament." (Unfortunately, I don't know when the event actually finished.)
People like me who aren’t interested in debauchery and want to do their best to be rested and bink a 6-7 figure payday.
I’m in my 40s with no interest in debauchery and partying. Most grow out of that by the time they’re in their 30s.
People can have fun without the need for drugs, alcohol, hookers, and whatever other sleazy thing Vegas has to offer.
Yes, I realize others see me as boring. And no, I don’t care what they think.

Id bet the majority of tourney players who travel to Vegas to play the WSOP are like you. Im in my late 30s and the same. If I were in my 20s Id be annoyed if I had to get up to play at 10 but now, sign me up. Im there to play poker, not sleep half the day with a hangover. Probably back in the golden days when the majority of poker players were people in their 20s with f you money to spend in a good economy, it would be a bad shout to start this early. But nowadays the 20 somethings who are there both to party and shell out thousands to play tournaments are a small minority.

to be fair I was driving at 8 am and the strip was as packed as it is during the day
not saying they play poker but astonishing it was that early and people are up and walking in crowds
and it was confiremd back then days did start a 1-2pm and ended later then tey do now
did y'all get to see the magazine with the dude on the cover for winning the entire thing
You don't have to be a wild partier to prefer later start times. On vacation a lot of people like to sleep in a little, go out for breakfast, maybe go for a swim or check out one of the many Vegas attractions, then gamble in the afternoon and evening. Also staying out late gambling is kind of par for the course in Vegas.
I don't understand people who want to be in the poker room at 9 am like they're going to a job (especially if they're recs). To each their own I suppose. I know if WSOP started any earlier than they already are I would be playing more at the Wynn and other properties.

The other consideration even if you aren’t staying out late or even sleeping late is that many players might be arriving in Vegas or changing hotels on the firdst day of the tournament. And earlier start times make it almost impossible to check in to your hotel room before you enter the tournament.
The WSOP website is now doubling the winnings for all the GGPoker events in its player stats.
Remember this event with a $5,000,000 first prize:
I wish it were true; my own results look much more impressive now 😀
