Yeah, there's plenty of reasons why investigative work product should remain sealed pretty much always.....but you got a good a chance of explaining that to MTG as you do quantum field theory. The threat is to sue in florida. As is common in usa lol justice system the aim is to coerce a deal. merits of the case are way down the list unless it can be prevented from proceeding at an early stage.

He's out of time for a defamation claim in the British courts, so it can't happen here. He would be inside the two-year limit in Florida, based on his Mar-a-Lago residence, but the US courts are more difficult for defamation claimants and it would be hard for him to show any actual detriment, since the film was not seen in the US and he did not lose the subsequent election -- in fact he wasn't even aware of the film until the recent leak of the memo that mentioned it among other examples of institutional bias. The BBC may be able to tough this one out and settle for rather a lot less than he's talking about.

You may be confusing criminal and civil law. US criminal law is weird and 90% of cases are resolved by plea bargain without trial. But settlement in civil cases is normal in the UK as well as the US, it's what judges always recommend if possible to save the horrible costs of trial. And US law is much less friendly to defamation claimants, bearing in mind the First Amendment, whereas UK law actually involves a reversal of burden. (The respondent has to prove truth, the claimant doesn't have to prove falsehood.) Trump has secured large settlements against US media organisations before now, and it's disagreeable to see a rich panjandrum threatening the media, but I don't know, maybe they just lied about him. US politics is so loony and polarised that that wouldn't be surprising.

I have to assume it is the same reason why Trump didn't go ahead with his pre-election promise to appoint a special prosecutor to look into Hillary's email-gate that he always has had a relationship with Hillary (and the Clinton's in general) and doing this to further protect them.

On those issues she disagreed with him, yes. I pointed that out before in this thread and gave her credit for it. But the thing she wants to and he wants to make her separation about is the Epstein files. She didn’t connect it back to those issues herself, and said she was still supportive of his agenda.

In reality it’s the Republicans who want to get rid of the subsidies, not Trump. They are dead set on that.

The investigation they are referring to only had circumstantial evidence of wrongdoing. Traditionally, you don’t release investigations so soon after, not only to protect innocent people from getting associated with crimes they were not found to be guilty of or the investigation concluded they did not do, but also to protect the reputations and lives of victims.

Trump is wrong that it’s a hoax, but I actually mostly agree that releasing them is not a great idea. However, I still am fine with efforts to release them as a political move to show just how much Republicans lie and flip flop when convenient. People tapped in know that it was Republicans demanding they be released, and the public at large thinks it would be a good idea, so why not shove their face in their own mess?

And just to hammer the point home, her disagreeing with Trump on Epstein is a natural extension of those beliefs, not a coming to Jesus moment.

Settling a reasonable case for a reasonable amount is a good thing. That's not what the US lol justice system is about. It's far too often coercion via process because "toughing it out" is just too big a punishment.

The BBC were out of order on this but it is highly unlikely that trump is threatening to sue because he expects to fight and win in court.
