surely there's enough nuance in the world to understand the difference between a child who pushed a classmate down the stairs not fully grasping the very dire consequences vs bringing a gun to school, threatening to shoot people with it and then pointing it at a classmate or teacher and saying i don't like you and then shooting it

Sure, but is anyone arguing that we should assume that the two kids in your hypothetical are equally disturbed? I just see people arguing that neither child should be euthanized or treated as an adult for assessing criminal culpability.

Again, execution of those who do not have standard adult human levels of intelligence would not be for punishment or deterrence. It would be to protect society without the cruelty of lifetime incarceration.

This doesn't make any sense; most prisoners would prefer lifetime incarceration over execution.

Strange little man.

I’m confused; aren’t mortgages public record in the office of deeds in whatever county you’re in? I can just look up how much is owed on a house and by whom if I have the address.

by Didace

The mortgage application is not public record.

Yeah, Didace is correct.

by biggerboat

Yeah, Didace is correct.

Exactly. Presumably he's looking through applications to see if people said they intended to use the properties as a primary residence or as an investment. There is all kinds of other personal info on those (SSN, etc), so its pretty ****ed up on many levels.

I have to think you're incorrect about this. I certainly hope so. I certainly wouldn't have tried to shoot a gun at 6, and I don't think I've ever known a child of that age who would deliberately shoot someone with one.If somehow the majority of 6yo's are bad seeds, then that doesn't change what I think should be done with them.I don't know what you're talking about regarding "

I think you correct that most 6 year olds wouldn't shoot someone else if they had a gun sitting in front of them - partly because many wouldn't be able to handle it and shoot it. So I think when I said most, I'd be wrong there.

But 6 is a little different than 14 or something. Six year olds dart out in traffic, would love to drive daddy's truck or push little Billy into the pool when he can't swim. They just don't collectively understand their actions enough to write them off in that manner at that age.

by chillrob

Really disingenuous argument from you here. I've already said a few times that it has nothing to do with punishment.

And your theoretical is silly and would be irrelevant even were it possible.
If this child had been forced, pressured, or cajoled to shoot someone by an adult, that would be a different situation. AFAIK no such thing happened in this case.

If it’s for protection and because you think capital punishment is less cruel your argument makes little sense. There’s nothing to protect from if someone isn’t even cognizant enough to have committed the crime they are accused of. There’s a difference between a moral patient and a moral agent. Further, most don’t agree that execution is better than life imprisonment.

The point of the analogy was not to say the situations are the same. It wouldn’t be much of an analogy if that was the point.

Here comes the derail which I won’t feed but just saying …,

Most murderers aren't very intelligent. But also I think prison for violent criminals should be much worse than it is now.

But the more relevant comparison is what I have made about a violent dog. If there is a dog that attacks humans and other dogs any time it can, do you think it would be more cruel to keep it in a small cage for the rest of its life or to painlessly kill it?

by Rococo

Yes, but he (and I) believe the two should be treated differently.

A child of that age only has the ability to mirror the adults around them. So essentially, if a child is only ever modeled violent behavior and they have no other way of knowing better, it is not the child’s fault if they imitate it.

It should also be obvious that the only way a 6 year old can attain a gun is via a negligent adult.

You've lost me with most of this post; I really don't understand what you're getting at.

But of course there is something to protect from even if the killer isn't fully aware of whst he has done.
If not, you should be happy for your child to have a pet crocodile.

Of course I agree that the parent was negligent and should be punished - that's how this discussion started.

I don't think this child ever witnessed a parent shooting someone. But regardless of that, I haven't said anything was the child's fault. I have specifically said several times that my preferred way to deal with this child has nothing to do with his fault or guilt. I don't see how you (and others) can get this wrong over and over again.

I would posit that you are a better candidate for euthanization than any six year old…

Yes, I saw you posted that a few days ago but then deleted it.

I know you would be much safer living next door to me than to the kid who shot his teacher. But I understand that your amazing misandry makes you misjudge the situation.

Yes, I clicked "Like" on a Steamraise video.

Murders sentenced to death almost invariably have their lawyers do whatever legal maneuvers necessary to delay their execution.

Plea-bargaining from 'Life without Parole' to "Death by Lethal Injection" would be interesting. 😀

There must be one form of bigotry allowed in any politics forum. In this forum, it's Misandry. 😀

Yup misandry and wishing someone was dead . Damn she hates men even her three cats are female

Irrelevant

But also I think prison for violent criminals should be much worse than it is now.

Huh? You were just telling us you wanted to execute people because it's less cruel, now you want extra cruelty? Collect your thoughts and start over.

But the more relevant comparison is what I have made about a violent dog..

Genuinely terrible comparison, we don't apply the same moral/legal standards to dogs for reasons that should be obvious to most small children. We get it, you're super edgy.

by geezerchess

Well, that and you could get away with a lot more criticizing Jews/Israelis/Zionists (even completely making things up and dehumanizing large groups like Victor and Jal frequently do) that you couldn't with any other group.

Lucium (RIP) didn't go 1/10 as far as Victor/Jal do every day, and we saw what happened to him.

Crossnerd has her sacred cows, and some groups it is game on.

Ironically, I would say her motivations are White/Jewish supremacy. She believes whites/Jews are morally superior and expects Whites/Jews to behave up to moral standards she doesn't hold other groups too.

As someone who doesn't believe in white/Jewish supremacy, I think that all people should be held to similar standards. Which includes being critical of non white people when appropriate and showing grace for whites/Jews when appropriate.

considering the reports of recent days, I didnt criticize Israel and its supporters enough. ofc I already knew they were using children as human shields and executing them, raping men and women, torturing prisoners to death, stealing organs, running people over with tanks, and sniping/droning innocents for fun like in a video game. but now we have Israeli soldiers speaking to Western media about their crimes.

by Trolly McTrollson

I agree. I'm not sure how to square this circle.

by Crossnerd

A child of that age only has the ability to mirror the adults around them.

I'm not sure this is correct. Some children are very disturbed for reasons that aren't entirely clear or that have nothing to do with abusive or reckless behavior by the adults in their lives. (That said, I obviously agree that abuse greatly increases the chances that a young child will have severe behavioral problems.)

In any case, what formula72 is obviously correct:

Six year olds dart out in traffic, would love to drive daddy's truck or push little Billy into the pool when he can't swim. They just don't collectively understand their actions enough to write them off in that manner at that age.

It's really that simple.
