Talk About Movies: Part 4
Somehow threads merged, so here's part 4 of our ongoing movie discussion.
Frankenstein (2025).... magnificent, and a love letter to the lush visuals and style of Hammer at its most beautiful.... And so spiritually close to the book.
It's made me want to read the book again - I've read it a lot of times over the years. And the end, whilst its own thing (there are no spoilers here), made me think of the final words of the creature in the book....
"Soon . . . I shall die, and what I now feel be no longer felt. Soon these burning miseries will be extinct. I shall ascend my funeral pile triumphantly and exult in the agony of the torturing flames... My spirit will sleep in peace, or if it thinks, it will surely think thus. Farewell"
Mary Shelley just keeps on speaking to the angsty teens inside us, everywhere, generation after generation. She was a genius, and mother of both science-fiction and horror genres. What a woman.

Deathstalker (2025)
Remake of the 80s cheesefest, it's a fun, lo fi and frequently funny parody of/loving homage to 80s Sword & Sorcery flicks, from the director of The Void
I quite enjoyed this one, it doesn't take itself seriously for a second, has some inventive creatures and doesn't skimp on the gore either. Totally practical FX too.
Overall, just an entertaining and enjoyable b flick.
Got a new favorite Christmas movie!
Die Hard was my original "Best Christmas Movie", but I think I need to change it to Violent Night (2022) with David Harbour as the less than festive St. Nick.
It actually pulled at the heartstrings among the carnage of Santa taking care of people on "The Naughty List".
And actually had a decent plot involving terrible people getting together at Christmas when mercenaries attempt a massive robbery at an estate party.

I have no memory of the original Deathstalker trilogy, for some reason. I mean, I loved Conan and Krull, Beastmaster, and the Sword and the Sorcerer movies....why don't I remember Deathstalker movies??
The first one was pretty unmemorable. I know I watched it recently, but had to check letterboxd to see what I thought of it, because I barely remember it. Watched it February of this year.
I wrote "Entertaining Conan ripoff, but a little too rapey for my tastes."
It's important to hit the right level of rapey.

They're very 80s and I personally found them passable if undemanding fun. Remake is decent and entertaining. You'll find the original Deathstalker free on youtube, it's only 79 minutes and all.

Remake stays away from that particular element and more on the sword & sorcery aspect and creature aesthetic. It's light although doesn't shy away from the gore. Overall I found it good solid fun.
Violent Night pairs well with Santa's Slay - which is a full exploitation cheap and cheerful take on the same basic premise - other than Santa is definitely the bad guy in Santa's Slay, but he does kill various arseholes that deserve it.

I was legit surprised at James Caan's cameo in Santa's Slay
Have you seen Sint aka Saint (2010)? It's a kickass little Dutch Santa themed Horror.
It's well worth checking out.
Osgood Perkins' latest, Keeper is damn interesting...very creepy vibe with little gore. Tatiana Maslany is fantastic in it.
I thought it was a slow burn and I don't think the ending is entirely satisfying but the imagery and setting is the film's strength.
Drop was weird. It spent 90% of the movie seemingly taking itself seriously, but then it was like the writers realised they had no idea where they were going with it and handed the script over to Michael Scott to finish it. I wish the whole movie was like that so I would at least know what level it was supposed to be on, but now I have no idea what the hell this was supposed to be. Ending was grade A entertainment though.
