Trump wants Mamdani to win because he is itching for a showdown with NYC, and he wants Mamdani in charge when that showdown occurs.
In my home game, the host—an avid Democrat and immigrant—has banned all Republicans on the basis that “he can’t have ICE supporters in the same house as his children.”
Poker has always been a place that broke down divides. It’s where I’ve had some of my most intriguing conversations with people from “the other side.” Lately though, politics have been, understandably, silent at the poker tables because of the fear of “politarding” or “rage baiting.”
The thought of Americans violently fighting one another over politics just seems so ludicrous and ridiculous to me. I ask my friends on both sides: if you saw a car with its hazards on the side of a lonely highway or road and it's -20 out (I live in MN), would you stop and help them? What if they have political bumper stickers on the back? (If no, what if there are children in the car?)

My observation is that both sides are unwilling to look at themselves, instead pointing the finger at the other. It is my prediction that it will be the “Covid Generation”—kids currently in 5th, 6th, and 7th grades, who were in kindergarten and 1st grade during the shutdown—that will make or break our fate. I feel that if there’s any generation that might fight each other with the same fervor as early- or mid-20th-century Europeans, or mid-19th-century Americans, it’s these kids.
