The "LOLCANADA" thread...again
So what's new?
I've noticed the Liberals are now ahead in all major polls and Trudeau hasn't even started to campaign yet
Lol, you're being silly. Comparing a single shift is silly when obviously they do less shifts. I get it, you want to dismiss and minimize the hard work of teachers any way you can, but this is a pretty silly way to do it. Stop being so silly you silly goose.

It's significantly more difficult and harder on the body to do a 12 hour back shift than working 8-3 mon-fri not to mention the paid time off, teachers/profs lead that category to btw.

Oh I agree with the fact that a nurse works harder than a teacher but I can’t imagine being a teacher today compared to when I was in school . I’ll say both professions deserve the utmost respect
Why pit one against the other? Why does it matter which one you think has it worse? We don't have to do this. We can support middle class unionized jobs that all of us in society depend on without trying to find ways to divide us up. If you want to compare teachers and oil oligarch CEOs ok sure maybe I can back you up here, but this bit about nurses vs teachers? **** that.

I coach youth sports and have kids, I'd say kids are probably better behaved now then when we were growing up.
When did I say they didn't deserve respect? But pretending they work long hours and acting like they have the toughest job out there just isn't true. I have nothing against teachers, I just do not like the teachers unions and think they have way too much power.

I disagree 100% when I was growing up we respected teachers and damn if a teacher said Ill talk to your parents about that that scared the crap out of us. Id never think of cursing a teacher either .
Not one person here said the teachers have the toughest job we just said they work hard though I do agree with you on the power of teacher unions
Though one question came to mind if Danielle Smith is wrong in using the not withstanding clause to force teachers back how does that differ from the Federal Government ordering workers back ?

Why don't you think that happens now? Teachers and parents communicate way more now because of email.

She's not wrong. Once the ATA refused to go to 3rd party mediation they were no longer bargening in good faith, kids shouldn't be used as pawns in negotiations and the proper thing was opening schools back up.
But pretending they work long hours and acting like they have the toughest job out there just isn't true.
This "long hours" is specifically referring to the length of the shift in Shifty-world right? And if they work afterschool programs and mark in the evenings and prep on the weekends all unpaid and it adds up in the 50+ hours a week, we don't get to call it "long hours" because the way shifty uses "long hours" he is ONLY referring to the length of the 12 hour paid shift even though those shifts aren't 5 days a week - right?
I don't think anyone said "the toughest job". That doesn't mean it can't be tough. And just looking at attrition rates, that alone seems to imply it isn't as cozy as you seem to think.

Why did the Albertan government use kids as pawns in negotiations and not just open schools back up by offering a better deal? Notice that the governments mediation offer explicitly removed the issue of class sizes from the scope of mediation. That was their choice, their choice to use "kids as pawns in negotiations". The other side doesn't have to accept that choice, it's a negotiation.
This business where you stand on your moral high horse and act like only one side in a stalled negotiation is the evil one using pawns in negotiations is BS.

LMAO, you silly silly goose. Yes that is the expectation with a salary position. It's why they get so much PTO you silly goose. Yes long hours refer to shift length, this isn't complicated.

What language would you want the Alberta government to use for class sizes? The 3 billion, new schools, more teachers and EA's doesn't address that? Currently the funding allows for 21 students per class, where's all the rest of the money?
The NDP gave the teachers 2 billion to reduce class sizes, did that happen?

It DOES seem simple. And yet you have forum posters in this very thread so completely confused they thought "lolololol 12 hours shifts vs 8-3" was a good point to make.

You missed the point. You are welcome to argue that side of the argument. It's a negotiation. You can make your anti-teacher points. They can make their pro-teacher points. The only stupid thing to do would be to accuse one side of the stalled negotiation as using children as pawns and try to play some type of moral superiority.

You are missing the point. Companies typically want to avoid arbitration with unions because of the unknowns and the decision by the mediator is binding. For the union to not agree to mediation shows the offer was solid and that this strike was more political than anything.

It's not my problem people don't know the difference between nurses working long hours and teachers working a lot of hours.

There are lots of reasons in lots of negotiations why BOTH sides might not want to use binding mediation, including the reason you were already informed of which is that the mediation letter from the government explicitly removed the biggest issue of class sizes, accepting binding mediation would be capitulating on that point immediately.
But you concluded oh no, actually they are using children as pawns oh noes the moral outrage!! Of course only applied to one side.
It's not my problem people don't know the difference between nurses working long hours and teachers working a lot of hours.
Nobody is confused by this, we're just lolling at the guy who thought it was a good dig against teachers to say nurses work long hours without mentioning the teachers working a lot of hours bit. You seem to have added that in now to make it seem like you weren't making a stupid one sided point that ignored that those long shifts are paired with doing way less of them.

Lol, some serious mental gymnastics there.
The teachers went on strike. Refused the offer and refused 3rd party mediation then claim class sizes are the biggest issue because it's the hardest problem to solve after they were given 2 BILLION dollars by the previous government to solve it and already have funding for 21 kids per class. But somehow it's the government that's using children as pawns in negotiations....
They probably didn't want to go to arbitration because they would have to explain where the 2 BILLION dollars they were already given went and they didn't reduce class sizes at all.

It's two sides of a negotiation. You can't just point your finger at one of the two sides and claim they are using children as pawns. Either side is able to make concessions and get out of the impasse, but the whole point of any strike negotiation is some sort of social harm occurs while the two parties aren't able to come together. You can be as fiercely anti-teacher and give all your anti-teacher "LOLOL 12 hour shift vs 8-3" stupid talking points all you want, but it is ridiculous to try and paint them and only them as making pawns of children.
Get off your high horse and for once in your like make a half decent point.

LOL. Get off your high horse and defend your position rather than making snarky comments.
How much money does it take to lower class sizes and why wasn't the 2 BILLION the NDP gave them enough? Why wasn't the offer good enough, how much more $ would the teachers need, and how do guarantee a reduction in class sizes when the funding they already receive is for 21 kids per class.
My "position" is that your moralizing BS about pawns of children was stupid.
Stop saying stupid things.
That's it.

You literally just said that. So what would the better offer be? And why didn't the 2 BILLION the NDP gave them reduce class sizes?
Do you struggle to follow conversations? You did a ridiculous moralizing about children being pawns. I mirrored that for you to hopefully indicate how ridiculous it was. Seems that failed.
One can have a debate on the merits. But as long as you have partisans screeching about using children has pawns there is no point.
You never answered my question how Smith invoking the not with standing clause differs from Carney ordering workers back
Both are denying a persons constitutional right to strike

No, back to work legislation and notwithstanding clause are VERY different. Any government can pass legislation, which the courts may or may not overturn as violating charter rights. Using the notwithstanding clause eliminates the courts so that even when legislation violates charter rights it is still law. That is the nuclear bomb of Canada’s system and should be used incredibly sparingly, not just to enforce our own personal culture war views.
