The indictment charges 31 people with running rigged games. Sounds like they used celebs / ex athletes as frontmen to get rich people into the games and then cheat them using marked cards/rigged shuffle machines.

And chill on Flagg just a bit. Kidd started him at point guard for his 1st ever NBA game (good idea?). Held scoreless in the 1st half, but ended with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He's going to have some growing pains for sure, but Kidd didn't do him any favors last night.

A pair of indictments unsealed in Brooklyn federal court on Thursday described separate schemes in which three current and former N.B.A. players and coaches worked with associates to defraud gamblers and online betting firms out of millions of dollars.
One indictment accused an N.B.A. player and a former coach of trading inside information on a series of games to win hundreds of thousands of dollars of bets with sports betting companies. The other charged a current N.B.A. head coach, Chauncey Billups of the Portland Trail Blazers, with participating in a series of rigged poker games organized by Mafia families that cheated unwitting victims out of at least $7 million.
Yeah sounds like poker games are tip if the iceberg. Selling info on nba games/injury status and being linked to the 5 crime families of NYC not a great look

Oddly enough, I don't think Spurs games are going to be near the top of my League Pass queue this year. For years, people have discussed Curry's gravity on offense. That gravity is real and it makes Warriors games more fun to watch because it opens up passing and driving lanes.
On defense, Wemby generates the opposite of Curry's gravity. He repels opposing players and more or less sucks the athleticism out of opposing teams. I'm sure he will lead the league in blocked shots, but in addition, he simply deters most teams from taking shots anywhere near the rim except in transition. If you watch a Spurs game, you will see tons of possessions in which an opposing players beats his man, but then dribbles through or dribbles back out because it is simply impossible to finish around the rim against a player whose standing reach is probably 6 inches higher than any other NBA starter. It's impressive, but it simply isn't that much fun to watch one player force the other team into an endless series of shitty jump shots in the half court.

The alleged scheme involving Rozier had to do with the manipulation of prop bets. The gamblers supposedly used non-public information about NBA players, and a network of straw bettors operating on online sportsbooks and in-person casinos, to bet hundreds of thousands of dollars. They bet the under on the players who intended to play worse, or remove themselves early from games. The example cited by New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch was a game on March 23, 2023, when Rozier left the game after nine minutes of play. Later that evening, Tisch said, his co-conspirators assembled at Rozier's house to count tens of thousands of dollars in winnings.

The other alleged scheme, which did implicate Billups, involved rigged, illegal poker games. Perpetrators allegedly used technology like hidden cameras, special contact lenses and glasses that allowed the wearer to read pre-marked cards, rigged shuffling machines that could analyze the sequence of cards in the deck, as well as X-ray tables that could read cards placed face down. This information was relayed to offsite operators who could then advise the schemers on how to manipulate the game.
"Fish" were lured into these games by the prospect of playing with professional athletes. Billups was allegedly one such athlete, as was Damon Jones. (Shoutout to anyone lured into an illegal gambling ring by the opportunity to Remember A Guy who posted a career 6.6 points per game.) These games were allegedly set up in concert with several organized crime families, and involved included robbery at gunpoint to procure one of the rigged shuffling machines, and the threat and extortion of players who hadn't paid up.
