Assuming he started with 200MM back in 1982 (no idea the exact value, trying to estimate it from the graph), if he invested that in the S&P 500 in the last trading session of 1982, and not including dividends (maybe he used them for living expenses), he would have about 9.4B now. No shady crypto dealings, no going busto in the 90s, no work basically. Being already rich and having the foresight to notice how stocks were cheap and all the positive catalysts moving forward, even I would have seen that lol.

Maybe someone as rich as him, assuming he was already well connected, would also have heard about Warren Buffett already and know about Berkshire Hathaway in 1982.

*not saying that putting everything in the S&P 500 is necessarily a good idea, especially if you are not a multimillionaire already, especially if you're not coming from a recession and very high nominal interest rates and the P/E of the market is not at single digits as it was in the early 80s.

well most normal people have a lot of their net worth in their owner occupied house equity sure.

but that went really well as well in the last decades.

what isn't in your house should be 80-20 sp500/bonds (according to buffet) and although bonds did horribly in the last few years, they did pretty well in the last decades.

you can sprinkle some gold and alternative assets here and there if you want to get fancy but a rational person should be mainly in equities (outside his house).

maybe not many people are rational sure.
