CA AB831 could cut CA players off from sweepstakes sites Club WPT gold, Global Poker, Clubs Poker, Stake.us.
News went public last week though the bill has been in motion since earlier this year.

Looks like WPT gold gave away millions to the wrong “Players” in the game.

I hate these fat pigs and the Ca tribes are shit too.

anyone have an update to this? How much time do we have left realistically in cali for these sweepstakes poker type sites???

I would say 6 months is a reasonable timeframe to expect to get bent over and screwed out of “legal” online poker.

Probably will come a lot sooner, though

went through some committee last week. only changes seems to be removing the language where a "person" is penalized for promoting the sites. passed unanimous out of committee, both parties a yes, so seems bipartisan and probably just a matter of time until it gets through state senate

Maybe Jan 1 at best case scenario. Could be earlier. California is run by a bunch of buffoons.

Most states are working towards banning sweepstakes style casinos. It's a goofy loophole and pretty clear that gambling interests in a state would not be cool with it (and the few states that have no casinos would want to ban it on moral reasons). Part of why I think WPT spends almost zero money on making a functional poker site is because it is just a short term grift until they're banned everywhere.

The real frustrating part about California is how powerful the tribes are and how little they care to make any sort of online offering. They make too much money in the B&M casinos and see no need to wrangle all their varying tribal interests together to create something that will make a minor amount of money compared to in person gambling and for some tribes may take away business without a return. The card rooms and racetracks also have some power to further muddy the possibility of this ever happening.

Well, this is very unfortunate news. Does anyone have any good suggestion for a site to play on if u live in CA? Thanks 4 all the responses. much appreciated.

Legends of poker at the bike if you live in so cal.

Thunder valley runs a series up north (IIRC)

There’s plenty of places to donk it up live and usually a bit more genuine experience of poker imo

I was looking for suggestions for an online poker site if u live in CA, I don't really play live poker anymore. thanks 4 the suggestions in any case.

Such a "Short term grift" that theyre spending ridiculous amounts of money on getting Ivey, Botez and Doug along with throwing millions at random people if they win a tourney.

"Throwing millions at random people" lmao they can do that because they are charging by far the highest rake in the industry, while offering zero other rewards or rakeback. You think the CEO is paying that out of pocket? The players are.

Short term grift is exactly what that site it. They will be out of business in a couple of years and everything about how they are operating shows that they know it.

Ignition/Bovada, ACR and Pokerbros will be the remaining options. If that.

"Everything about how they are operating" as in spending millions and millions on the most coveted and most expensive faces of the brand and giving random people millions. You people are ******ed lol. A "short term grift" obviously isn't doing that, you're drastically overestimating how much rake they are making lol.

You dumbos have been saying the Sweepstakes model is going to be doomed ever since Global started like 10 years ago and Global is still going strong lol. Global just sucks at marketing so WPT Gold took advantage of it.

fair point but could they spend one hour of programmer time to add a filter to the tournament page?

How about one hour of programming to fix geolocation issues? Club WPT Gold is a complete joke.

really really hope it doesn't go through but it if does thats like 10 states thats banning Sweeps model...

at this point we are really hoping on a big GGpoker merger with ceasars? where it gets the greenlight for the states? if we have to have a monopoly, seems like we are forced to, im hoping it gives us access to worldwide traffic like the old FTP and PS was

Looks like next committee hearing is 8/18, so still a few weeks of sweepstakes donks left at minimum.

Does anyone know if this bill goes in effect would it be immediate like NYS ban? If I remember correctly it only gave a couple weeks to cash out.

Jetto,

This would be fine with me. As long as it is well run and regulated. By well run i mean the setup of tournaments and cash games available as well as proper software.

I have never played on GG but if I can count on getting deposits and withdrawals quickly then its a huge win.

I live in CA so **** those people

looks like they voted on this yesterday and it passed? it says its been " Placed on suspense file". Does anyone know what that means? How much time do Californians have left on global poker?

They didn’t pass the bill. They approved it being put on suspense file.

“In California's legislative process, a "suspense file" is a mechanism used by the Assembly and Senate Appropriations committees to hold bills with significant financial implications.“

Looks to me like the suspense hearing is tomorrow, 8/20.

It did not pass. This is a good thing. Check this out.

Wow, I'm surprised to see Native American tribes in opposition to this. Anyone know why? I'd thought they'd want online sweeps sites gone yesterday

I think those are very small tribes that either don’t own a casino and perhaps want to do something online like this, or might just essentially be hired by the pro sweepstakes side to be against this bill. Any real tribe with money and influence wants sweeps gone.
